(NSI News Source Info) FORT WORTH, Texas, - September 1, 2009: United States Secretary of Defense Robert Gates visited Lockheed Martin’s [NYSE: LMT] final assembly operation for the F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter today, conveying optimism for the program’s future and emphasizing the F-35’s importance to global security. U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates speaks to reporters at a news conference in front of an F-35 Lightining II fighter at Lockheed Martin Fort Worth, Texas. Gates said the United States "cannot afford as a nation not to have this airplane."
“We cannot afford as a nation not to have this airplane,” Gates said at a news conference following a tour of the factory where the F-35 is assembled. “I was very impressed by what I saw this morning – by the investments that have been made in the production line, the robotics and automation. I’m heartened by what I’ve seen … but especially by the commitment of the people involved in putting this airplane together.”
Gates walked along portions of the mile-long factory floor, where he stopped to converse with F-35 workers, and saw all three variants of the aircraft in various stages of assembly.
Robert J. Stevens, chairman, president and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corp., said it was a “great honor” to host Secretary Gates.
“The purpose of the Secretary's visit was to make very clear to us his expectations and our need to perform to our plans. That means producing a superior technological product and making sure that we maintain our schedule, enable the government to start training pilots in 2011, and fully equipping the Marine Corps for initial operational capability in 2012. It also means we’ll support our allied governments’ interests in the program while maintaining affordability,” Stevens said. “So, there's a full array of things that we have to do, but we have great confidence in the team that we've put together here.”
The visit was Gates’ first to Lockheed Martin’s Fort Worth plant, which also has served as the final assembly point for the B-24 Liberator, B-36 Peacemaker, B-58 Hustler, F-111 Aardvark and F-16 Fighting Falcon.
The Lockheed Martin F-35 is a 5th generation fighter, uniquely characterized by a combination of advanced stealth with supersonic speed and high agility, sensor fusion, network-enabled capabilities and advanced sustainment. The three F-35 variants are derived from a common design, are being developed together and will use the same sustainment infrastructure worldwide, bringing economies of commonality and scale.
The United States and eight international partners are planning to buy more than 3,000 F-35 aircraft.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2008 sales of $42.7 billion.

(NSI News Source Info) OSHKOSH, Wis. - September 1, 2009: Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK), will demonstrate the latest in unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) technology at the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) and Fort Hood III Corps Robotics Rodeo, Aug. 31 through Sept. 3, in Fort Hood, Texas.
The company will use Oshkosh military vehicles to demonstrate the Oshkosh TerraMax™ autonomous vehicle system and its capabilities, including robotic logistics convoy operations, advanced perception technology and human-assisted change detection, during two unique demonstrations.TerraMax™—The future of unmanned ground vehicles and leader-follower technology. Completely autonomous, requiring no driver and no remote control, the TerraMax was developed to help take troops out of harm’s way and reduce the personnel necessary to maintain supply lines. Based on Oshkosh’s MTVR (Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement) defense truck, TerraMax is equipped with technologies that include complex sensing systems, high-power computers and drive-by-wire technology. TerraMax was one of only five vehicles, and the only tactical cargo hauler, to complete the 2005 DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Grand Challenge’s 132-mile desert course. TerraMax exhibited obstacle avoidance, GPS waypoint following, and 30 hours of continuous operation—all applicable to military missions. Oshkosh has already integrated unmanned and leader-follower technology in the PLS, a 10-wheel-drive truck and trailer system. On November 3, 2007 Team Oshkosh competed in the third DARPA Grand Challenge, the Urban Challenge, which called for teams to compete to build an autonomous vehicle able to complete a 60-mile urban course safely in less than six hours. TerraMax was one of only 11 teams to qualify for the finals, and did so by demonstrating the advanced navigation and traffic skills required to safely compete in the race. After the qualification test Dr. Tony Tether, director of DARPA complimented the team on being the safest performer on the merging vehicle course of the 11 chosen to compete.*
“Oshkosh continues to embrace, develop and advance cutting edge autonomous technology for military applications,” said Andy Hove, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Defense. “We have some of the best minds in the industry working to apply autonomous technology to missions that will help our military customer.”
Oshkosh Defense is an industry leader in the development of autonomous vehicle technology. The company has a history of teaming with technology experts to continue breaking new ground and as a result, the Oshkosh TerraMax autonomous vehicle system incorporates the latest in advanced robotic hardware and software components:
• The Oshkosh Command Zone™ electronics system provides a drive-by-wire capability, which allows intelligent computer control of steering, acceleration, braking and transmission.
• A new IBEO LUX laser scanner offers enhanced sensing capabilities as part of the light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system for 360-degree obstacle detection. The laser scanner’s low-profile packaging reduces the visual signature of the sensors on the vehicle, allowing the vehicle to blend in more seamlessly within the military’s fleets.
• Oshkosh and the National Robotics Engineering Center of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University are working to improve the occupants’ situational awareness by fusing scanning laser ranging technology with electro-optical vision to create an immersive 3D display of their surroundings. The Perception Capabilities Demonstrator technology system is also able to render imagery from a previously driven route alongside real-time data, allowing a human operator to analyze the scene for changes and quickly identify potential threats such as IEDs. Future developments of this emerging technology will focus on improved localization for autonomous operations in varied environments, including areas with little or no GPS coverage.
• TORC Technologies has created a Route and Mission Development Tool (RMDT) that allows for offline development of missions using aerial imagery.
Oshkosh continues to refine and develop autonomous technologies to help the military achieve a future of unmanned logistics missions and improved situational awareness for vehicle occupants, in an effort to help save the lives of uniformed service members.

DTN News: Indonesia TODAY September 1, 2009 ~ Terrorist Infiltrated Airline According To Indonesian Police
*Source: DTN News / Int'l Media
(NSI News Source Info) JAKARTA, Indonesia - September 1, 2009: A suspect wanted in connection with hotel suicide bombings in the Indonesian capital infiltrated the national airline in a plot to carry out a "bigger attack," the police chief said Monday. Indonesian National Police spokesman Maj. Gen. Nanan Sukarna, right, and his deputy Brig. Gen. Sulistyo Ishak, left, hold wanted posters of four militants, from left to right, Ario Sudarso, Mohamad Syahrir, Bagus Budi Pranoto and Syaifudin Jaelani who are suspected to be involved in recent J.W. Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotel bombings during a press conference at the National Police headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The suspect, identified only as Syahrir, was recruited by a militant network and had been working as a technician with the airline, Garuda Indonesia, said National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri.
Documents seized by police uncovered the plot to strike Indonesia's airline sector, he said, without providing details about when or how the attack was supposed to have taken place.
Syahrir resigned from the airline and remains at large, Danuri said.
The blasts at the J.W. Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels on July 17 killed seven people and wounded more than 50 others, ending a four-year pause in terror attacks in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation.
Syahrir is the brother-in-law of a militant suspect shot dead by police earlier this month in an hours-long standoff in Central Java province, Danuri said.
The dead suspect, Ibrohim, had been working as a florist at the two hotels for years before smuggling in explosives and the bombers for the July attacks, police say.
Danuri declined to provide further information to reporters after making his comments to parliament's foreign affairs and security committee, but the details appear to support theories by terrorism experts that militants infiltrated potential targets years in advance.
Additional evidence was also found about a plot to assassinate President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in retaliation for the execution of three convicted Bali bombers in 2008. Danuri provided no further details.
Police were still searching for several suspects in the recent hotel bombings, including the alleged mastermind, Noordin Muhammad Top, said to head a breakaway faction of the regional terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah.
Indonesia suffered bombings between 2002 and 2005 that together killed more than 240 people, most of them foreign tourists on the resort island of Bali.
Danuri said 455 suspected militants have been detained in Indonesia since 2002, and 347 received prison sentences ranging from a few months to the death penalty. Some 192 have served prison terms and been released.
One of the four fugitives in the Jakarta hotel bombings was a convicted bomb-maker named Urwah who was sentenced to seven years but released and "returned to his old habitat," Danuri said.
Police have said they were investigating the possibility the July bombings were carried out with foreign funding, which terrorism experts believe could indicate links to al-Qaida.
Authorities say the terrorism network was involved in four major attacks in Indonesia, including the two Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005, the J.W. Marriott bombing in 2003, and a blast at the Australian Embassy also in Jakarta in 2004.

DTN News: Saudi Militant Confesses To Terrorism In Iraq
*Source: DTN News / Int'l Media
(NSI News Source Info) MUSCAT, Oman - September 1, 2009: A suspected al-Qaeda militant from Saudi Arabia has confessed to having been trained by Syrian intelligence agents to act against Iraq's national security. Iraqi authorities aired the videotaped confession by 29-year-old Mohammed Hassan al-Shemari on Sunday.
The Saudi national said that he had entered Iraq with the help of Syrian intelligence agents after completing his training course in an al Qaeda training camp near the Syrian port city of Latakia.
"I entered Iraq through Syria`s Al-Bukamal border region along with three Saudi, Libyan and Algerian nationals and was deployed in Iraq's Diyala Province," he explained.
Shemari said when he first arrived in Syria from Saudi Arabia, he was met by a Syrian intelligence agent, called 'Abu al-Qaqaa', who took him to an al-Qaeda training camp.
"They gave us lessons in Islamic law and trained us to fight. The camp was well known to Syrian intelligence," Reuters quoted him as saying. Al-Shemari pointed out that the group, with which he was trained, included other Saudi nationals, as well as Libyans, Algerians, Moroccans, Tunisians, Yemenis, Kuwaitis and Syrians.
The al-Qaeda militant, moreover, confessed that he had received Syrian and Saudi financial support in order to carry out acts of terrorism against Shias in Iraq. Al-Shemari also mentioned that he had given lessons in decapitation, adding that he had beheaded some Iraqi police officers in order to train armed fighters.
The videotaped confession could ratchet up already existing tensions between Iraq and Syria. Al-Shemari was arrested in Diyala province before last week's bombings on suspicion of being an al-Qaeda leader in Iraq.
Last week, both countries recalled their ambassadors after Iraq demanded Syria hand over two alleged masterminds of Baghdad bombings, which had claimed the lives of almost 100 people, mainly at two government ministries.

DTN News: Boeing to Provide Network For US Air Force C-17 Training
*Source: DTN News / Boeing
(NSI News Source Info) ST. LOUIS, USA - September 1, 2009: The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] has received a contract from the U.S. Air Force to deliver a C-17 Distributed Training Center (DTC) to Scott Air Force Base, Ill. Boeing will provide the ability to network 10 existing C-17 training sites in the United States, using Scott Air Force Base as the hub.
"This capability will allow the Air Force's Air Mobility Command (AMC) to conduct continuation and mission qualification training, execute mission rehearsal operations, develop tactics, and participate in large force exercises in a realistic environment at a fraction of live-fly costs and with very little risk," said Sean Carey, AMC program manager for Distributed Mission Operations (DMO).
Boeing expects to deliver the DTC in January 2012. The 10 training sites will maintain their existing connections to the DMO network, which allows military aircraft training sites around the world to link with one another for large-scale, high-fidelity training operations.
The C-17 established its networking capability in 2004, allowing C-17 crews to participate in "Virtual Flag" exercises with multiple aircraft platforms for the first time. In order to support the large amount of bandwidth required as additional C-17 training sites were added, Boeing began upgrading the associated hardware and software in 2007.
The C-17-specific DTC will extend current C-17 DMO capabilities, allowing for higher-fidelity aircrew training; it also will provide the airlift community with a continuously available training network capability.
"Expanding the AMC's DMO capability allows for interoperability between simulators within AMC, as well as between AMC and other Air Force major commands, and joint and coalition partners," said Mark McGraw, Boeing vice president, Training Systems and Services. "Mission-ready C-17 aircrews are essential to global security. This program ensures that they will receive the most realistic, comprehensive training available."
A unit of The Boeing Company, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems is one of the world's largest space and defense businesses specializing in innovative and capabilities-driven customer solutions, and the world's largest and most versatile manufacturer of military aircraft. Headquartered in St. Louis, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems is a $32 billion business with 70,000 employees worldwide.

DTN News: Bolivia Looks To China, Brazil To Buy Combat Aircraft
*Source: DTN News / Int'l Media
(NSI News Source Info) LA PAZ, Bolivia - September 1, 2009: Bolivia is looking to buy six combat aircraft from China or Brazil after the U.S. blocked the sale of Czech planes, Defense Minister Walker San Miguel said in remarks published Monday. The L159 Advanced Light Combat Aircraft (ALCA) was developed by Aero Vodochody to meet the Czech Air Force operational requirements for a light multi-role combat aircraft. The aircraft has been developed in the single-seat L159A and two-seat L159B versions. The Czech Air Force ordered 72 L159A aircraft and the first was delivered in April 2000. All 72 were delivered by the end of 2003. The L159B completed its first flight in June 2002 and the Czech Air Force has ordered two aircraft. Aero Vodochody was owned 50% by the Czech Government and 35% by the Boeing Company. However in October 2004, Boeing withdrew from the company. In November 2005, the Czech Government announced that the company was to be privatised and, in October 2006, was sold to Penta Investments AS. The L159 ALCA is based on the proven airframe design and aerodynamic configuration of the L39 Albatros and L59 family of basic and advanced jet trainers, and incorporates a high-performance military turbofan engine, advanced avionics and sensors. The operational capabilities of the aircraft include close air support, tactical reconnaissance, air defence, counter insurgency, border patrol, anti-ship missions, and lead-in fighter and weapons training.
"They could be Chinese or they could be Super Tucanos from Brazil, one or the other," San Miguel was quoted as saying an in interview with the newspaper La Razon.
He provided few details on the status of negotiations with either country.
The government of leftist President Evo Morales last year tried to buy six L-159 ALCA two-seater light combat aircraft, made with U.S. components, from the Czech Republic for $58 million.
But Morales disclosed last month that the sale had been vetoed by Washington.
Bolivia also has been negotiating to buy arms and equipment from Russia worth about $100 million, including an Antonov aircraft for presidential travel outside the country.

DTN News: Brazil Slams U.S. Bases In Colombia
*Source: DTN News / Int'l Media
(NSI News Source Info) BRASILIA, Brazil - September 1, 2009: The imminent use of seven bases in Colombia by the U.S. military is "a serious problem" that has to be discussed further by South America's leaders, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Aug 31. The President of Colombia Alvaro Uribe (L) listens to his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Ignacio Lula Da Silva during the family picture of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) presidential summit in San Carlos de Bariloche, Rio Negro, Argentina on August 28, 2009. South American presidents attacked Friday plans for US bases in Colombia at a summit in Argentina, voicing their fears of renewed interference by Washington in their region.'It's about mobility to make war,' said Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the fiercest opponent of the plan, as he brandished a document he said was a US air force strategy document setting out that aim.
"The treaty between Colombia and the United States needs to have a legal guarantee allowing any other country that feels threatened to go before international forums," Lula said in his weekly radio broadcast.
The controversial bases deal, details of which first came to light in Colombia's press mid-July, was the subject of a stormy summit between South American presidents on Aug. 28.
That meeting heard fears by Venezuela and other countries that the expanded U.S. military presence in Colombia - ostensibly to fight drug traffickers - could be used against neighboring nations, several of which have leftist anti-U.S. governments.
It issued a statement warning "foreign military forces" against threatening the national sovereignty of other countries, without mentioning the U.S. or Venezuela by name.
It also agreed South America would examine the issue further in future meetings.
Lula said he wanted the region's fledgling defense council to study the "real border situation of all the countries" and another council on fighting drug trafficking to examine ways the region can tackle the issue itself with U.S. involvement.
"We need to take on the responsibility of looking after our noses, looking after our territory, looking after our borders," he said.
