(NSI News Source Info) ANKARA - March 8, 2009: Turkey is ready to resume mediation in Israel-Syria peace talks, the foreign minister said Saturday.
"We are ready for resumption of talks should the proposal on this come from both sides," Ali Babacan said at a joint press conference with U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton.
Babacan said Israeli and Syrian representatives have held four rounds of negotiations in Turkey but that they were suspended over Israel's military operation in the Gaza Strip.
Talks between Damascus and Tel Aviv stalled in 2000 because the sides were unable to agree on the Golan Heights, which Israel occupied in the 1967 Arab-Israeli Six Day War. Syria has said peace talks would only be possible if Israel accepts the demand for a full return of the Golan Heights.
