(NSI News Source Info) April 13, 2009: The Sri Lankan military has announced a two-day ceasefire in its operations against Tamil Tiger rebels in the north-east of the country.Sri Lanka soldiers patrol the Puthukkudiyirippu area, where fighting between the Sri Lanka army and the Liberation Tamil Tigers Eelam (LTTE) has taken place, in northeast Sri Lanka.
A government spokesman said there would be a halt in operations for the Sinhala and Tamil New Years on Monday and Tuesday.
Its aim was to give tens of thousands of civilians trapped in the conflict zone time to flee.
There has been no immediate response by the Tamil Tigers.
