DTN News: U. S. Army Recalls 44,000 Combat Helmets Source: U.S. Department of Defense dated May 14, 2010 (NSI News Source Info) WASHINGTON - May 15, 2010: The US Army, on Friday, recalled 44,000 advanced combat helmets after discovering that some of the helmets manufactured by ArmorSource LLC, formerly Rabintex USA LLC., offer substandard protection. The ArmyTmes reports on Friday, 14th May, that there is evidence that the helmets were produced using unauthorised manufacturing practices, defective materials and improper quality procedures. It is believed that this could potentially reduce ballistic and fragmentation protection. The article says the army is not sure where the suspected defective helmets are, but say that it is likely that some are in the war zone in Iraq. According to the ArmyTimes: The Army-wide message orders an immediate inspection of all ACHs and the “immediate direct exchange of those ACHs manufactured by ArmorSource and Rabintex” through unit central issue facilities. The exact risk to soldiers wearing the recalled helmets is still being determined but sample testing of the inventory of helmets revealed that they did not meet army specifications. The recall constitutes about 4% of approximately 1 million helmets in the US Army's inventory. The ArmyTimes noted: Army officials would not comment on how the service found out about the defective helmets and are still unsure how long the faulty helmets have been in the inventory.
