DTN News: Iran Denies Reports of Attack On Ahmadinejad
Source: DTN News / The New York Times By William Yong and Alan Cowell
(NSI News Source Info) TEHRAN, Iran- August 4, 2010: Reports that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was the target of a grenade attack prompted swift and vigorous denials by the Iranian government on Wednesday, which said that a firecracker had been thrown some distance from the presidential motorcade, according to Iranian news media. By all accounts, Mr. Ahmadinejad was unhurt. Press TV, the state-run satellite broadcaster, quoted an unidentified “informed source” in the presidential office as saying the reports of an attack were false. “Some foreign news sources published reports that a grenade exploded near the motorcade of President Ahmadinejad during his visit to the western city of Hamedan on Wednesday,” Press TV said. “The source denied the allegation, saying no such attack had happened.” ISNA, the Iranian Students News Agency, said a firecracker went off while Mr. Ahmadinejad “was being welcomed” in the city, causing no injuries. According to Khabar Online, a government-licensed news service, the firecracker was thrown at a minibus carrying journalists in the presidential motorcade, about 100 yards behind the vehicle carrying Mr. Ahmadinejad. The person who threw the firecracker was arrested, the news service said. Earlier, Reuters quoted an unidentified source in President Ahmadinejad’s office as confirming that the Iranian president’s motorcade had come under an attack on Wednesday but that he had escaped unharmed. The source was quoted as saying that a homemade explosive device had exploded as the president was traveling from an airport in Hamedan to give a speech in a sports arena. One person had been arrested, according to the source quoted by Reuters. Mr. Ahmadinejad later appeared on live Iranian television at a sports stadium in Hamedan, Reuters reported. He was apparently well and did not mention an attempted assault. On Monday, in a speech in Tehran, Mr. Ahmadinejad said he believed Israel had “hired mercenaries to assassinate me.”

DTN News: Pakistan TODAY August 4, 2010 - Assassination Sets Off Wave of Killings In Pakistani City

DTN News: Pakistan TODAY August 4, 2010 - Assassination Sets Off Wave of Killings In Pakistani City
Source: DTN News / The New York Times By Salman Masood
(NSI News Source Info) ISLAMABAD, Pakistan- August 4, 2010: A wave of violence after the assassination of a senior politician on Monday has left at least 47 people dead in Pakistan’s largest city, the southern port of Karachi. The violence erupted after the politician, Raza Haider, a provincial lawmaker and the leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, was shot to death along with his bodyguard. Within hours, mobs spread out across Karachi, setting fire to public and private property, including dozens of vehicles. Business centers were forced to shut down. Normal life has since come to a virtual standstill, and schools and government offices remained closed on Tuesday. President Asif Ali Zardari ordered an immediate inquiry into the assassination, according to the presidential spokesman, Farhatullah Babar. Karachi, a sprawling city of more than 16 million people, has a long history of sectarian and ethnic violence, as well as violent political clashes over the economic spoils and ties to criminal syndicates that come with political control of the city. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement, or M.Q.M., controls the city government with the support of Urdu speakers who migrated to Pakistan after partition in 1947. The party has been criticized for its strong-arm tactics in the past. Most of those killed since Monday have been ethnic Pashtuns, who have migrated to Karachi in increasing numbers from the north, where the army has opened a series of campaigns against the Pakistani Taliban in recent years. The Taliban are mostly Pashtun, and the influx to Karachi has led to charges by the M.Q.M. and its supporters of a creeping “Talibanization” of the city. In recent months, the M.Q.M. has clashed violently with the Awami National Party, a political party that draws its strength from the Pashtuns in the city and elsewhere. The M.Q.M. says 150 of its workers have been killed in the past three weeks. Local news media have reported that at least 300 people have been the victims of political killings in Karachi this year. Pakistani analysts say the struggle between the parties may be one for spoils. “The current violence could have to do with a battle that is political but could also have to do with the various vested interests that have a stake in the criminalized system that runs Karachi — in terms of say, land, water and revenue generation and apportionment,” said Omar R. Quraishi, editor of the editorial pages of The Express Tribune, an English-language newspaper in Karachi. Nasreen Jalil, a senior leader of the M.Q.M. and a former deputy mayor of the city, blamed leadership of the Awami National Party in Karachi for supporting the Taliban and other militants working with drug traffickers and land-grabbing gangs operating in the city. “We have pointed out several times that Taliban are present in Karachi,” Ms. Jalil said in an interview. “They are residing in Pashtun localities, most of which are illegally occupied by land mafia,” she said. “Many Pashtuns are involved in drug trade, selling arms and ammunitions. Whenever there is an anti-encroachment drive, killings increase in the city in retaliation.” Leaders of the Awami National Party deny the allegations. Ms. Jalil also blamed some elements of President Zardari’s Pakistan Peoples Party for supporting criminal gangs in the city. Rehman Malik, the country’s interior minister, on Tuesday blamed Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, a banned militant group, which is involved in a series of terrorist attacks against Shiites and other minorities, for the assassination that set off the violence. Responding to the interior minister’s claims, Ms. Jalil said that Islamic militants had joined hands with the local A.N.P. leadership. “It is syndicate,” she said. “A council of criminal elements.” Pakistan Related News;

DTN News: General Dynamics Itronix’s New GD300 Rugged Wearable Computer Enables Unprecedented GPS And Situational Awareness For Warfighters
* As light as commercial handheld GPS devices, the Android™-based GD300 enables warfighters to pinpoint their location, refer to pre-loaded mission plans and access secure tactical networks
Source: DTN News / General Dynamics
(NSI News Source Info) SUNRISE, Fla. - August 4, 2010: Combining commercial global positioning and communications technology with battlefield-rugged computing, General Dynamics Itronix is introducing the GD300 fully rugged arm- or chest-worn computer. Weighing less than 8 ounces, the Android™-based GD300 operates like an ultra-sensitive commercial GPS unit or, with the click of a cable, interfaces with tactical radios like the Rifleman Radio (AN/PRC-154) for secure access to the tactical network. The GD300 uses a quadra-helix antenna for real-time global positioning that defies interference even when the user is positioned in mountainous regions or urban environments.
“The GD300 is a game-changing computer that will save lives,” said Mike DiBiase, vice president of Computing Technologies for General Dynamics C4 Systems. “We expect the GD300 will become the most important 8 ounces of tactical communications and situational awareness equipment that a warfighter can carry.” The GD300 hosts the open architecture, Android™-based operating system to easily accommodate current and emerging applications for warfighters at all command levels. Operating in two distinct modes, the GD300 serves as a stand-alone GPS device or, when connected to a tactical radio, performs as a tactical mission computer. The GD300 supports commercially available standalone applications or military “apps” like the Tactical Ground Reporting (TIGR) System which is currently in use by the military.
When connected to a tactical radio, the lightweight GD300 enables warfighters to securely communicate, share information and collaborate while on the move. Delivering up to eight hours of continuous operation, the lightweight GD300 is powered by standard lithium-ion batteries. Reginald Daniels, an engineer for the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory responsible for testing military wearable computers, said, “Given that the dismounted warfighter’s job is not a computer operator, it is imperative that wearable computers be unobtrusive, intuitive to operate and provide compute-on-the-go functions.”
The GD300’s sleek ergonomic design was the result of input and feedback from wearable-computer users from the military, government and emergency first responders. The GD300 includes a sunlight readable display and functional control buttons typically found on any Android-based device. The 3.5-inch touch-screen display lets warfighters move information around, zoom in or out or place digital ‘markers’ on tactical maps with the touch of a gloved finger. Comfortably fitting in an adult’s hand, the computer fully meets MIL-STD 810G specifications for ruggedness.

DTN News: Northrop Grumman Defense Support Program Satellite Model Slated For Display At U.S. Air Force Museum
* Full-size Representation Honors DSP's Historic Performance
Source: DTN News / Int'l Media
(NSI News Source Info) REDONDO BEACH, Calif., - August 4, 2010: To commemorate 40 years of exceptional reliability and on-orbit performance of its Defense Support Program (DSP) satellites, Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has configured a full-size model of a DSP satellite for display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The 35-foot-long model is the only full-size representation of the satellite. It consists of the Structural Test Model (STM) mated to the Infrared Sensor Trailblazer component without the associated electronics. Crews completed work in May and the model was shipped in July to the museum aboard a C5 aircraft, in the same shipping container used for the actual satellite. The configuration of the satellite model was performed as part of the company's closeout of DSP production contracts for the Air Force. "We are honored the Air Force has accepted our model to celebrate the 40-year history of DSP's robust performance as one of the nation's vital missile early warning systems," said David DiCarlo, sector vice president and general manager, Space Systems Division. "The DSP constellation continues to provide outstanding mission analysis data from its infrared sensor." "We are proud to have produced the payload for the primary DSP mission at our facility in Azusa, Calif.," noted John Johnson, sector vice president and general manager, ISR Systems Division, Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems. "A display in the Wright-Patterson Museum is a fitting tribute to one of the most successful programs in the history of the U.S. Air Force." In 2008, the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center awarded a contract to the company to provide technical support for the operational DSP spacecraft, primary infrared sensor and mission analysis. The cost-plus award fee contract is valued at $206 million, which includes the initial year followed by four one-year options. The company is in the second year of the contract. Northrop Grumman built the DSP infrared sensors in Azusa, Calif., and integrated them with the DSP spacecraft in Redondo Beach, Calif. DSP support and sustainment work will continue at both sites. The first DSP was launched in 1970 and the final DSP was orbited in 2007. Several times throughout production, the spacecraft and sensor were upgraded to protect against evolving worldwide threats. DSP satellites have demonstrated exceptional reliability, providing an extra 184 satellite-years beyond their required life on-orbit to date. (NSI News Source Info) SUNNYVALE, Calif., - August 4, 2010: A joint U.S. Air Force/Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] team has successfully transitioned the Milstar satellite constellation ground control system to the new Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) Mission Control Segment (MCS). The AEHF MCS is now performing day-to-day operations of the Milstar satellite constellation and is poised to support deployment of the AEHF satellite constellation with first launch scheduled for August 2010. This critical system transition required a high performance integrated team spanning many government and contractor organizations. The Lockheed Martin team led the planning and testing of the transition and provided critical technical support throughout the transition execution and subsequent weeks of operation. The AEHF system is the successor to the five-satellite Milstar constellation and will provide significantly improved global, highly secure, protected, survivable communications for all warfighters serving U.S. national security. Developed and delivered by Lockheed Martin, the new AEHF MCS consolidates Milstar and AEHF satellite control and communication resource planning into a single, modernized Mission Control Segment. The AEHF MCS provides enhanced capabilities through a distributed architecture that provides flexibility to deployed warfighters to directly plan and control satellite payload resources. “This is a key milestone that will assure continuous and vital communications for the warfighter from the legacy system to the new, higher capability AEHF satellite system,” said Mike Davis, Lockheed Martin’s AEHF vice president. “Milstar continues to deliver critical secure, real-time connectivity to the warfighter and we look forward to providing new communications capabilities with the launch of the first AEHF satellite.” The AEHF team is led by the U.S. Air Force Military Satellite Communications Systems Wing at the Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles Air Force Base, Calif. Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, Sunnyvale, Calif. is the AEHF prime contractor and system manager. The MCS is provided by Lockheed Martin Information Services & Global Solutions Defense division. Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 136,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation’s 2009 sales from continuing operations were $44.5 billion.
