DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Lockheed Martin Wins Role On Navy C4ISR Services Contract

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Lockheed Martin Wins Role On Navy C4ISR Services Contract
(NSI News Source Info)

ORLANDO, Fla.,

- March 1, 2011:

The U.S. Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) selected Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] as one of four companies that will compete for task orders to enhance situational awareness on U.S. Navy ships, submarines and shore stations. The three-year indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract has an $831 million ceiling value, with one two-year option period that potentially raises the ceiling value to $1.375 billion.

The SPAWAR customer will use the contract to install and operationally certify Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems on Navy vessels and stations on the East and West Coasts as well as at multiple overseas locations. Of the four companies selected for the contract, Lockheed Martin is the only non-incumbent.

“The situational awareness that comes with C4ISR capability is critical to successful mission execution,” said Carey Smith, vice president of Technical Services, Lockheed Martin Global Training and Logistics. “Lockheed Martin is proud to support efforts that will strengthen this awareness, which is truly the backbone of warfare intelligence.”

This win expands the scope of work Lockheed Martin performs for SPAWAR. The Corporation supports SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific through engineering, fabrication, installation, logistics and administrative support, design, testing and evaluation, and rapid prototype development. It also manages the acquisition of commercial-off-the-shelf items utilized in turnkey operations of sophisticated electronics and communications equipment and systems.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 132,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation’s 2010 sales from continuing operations were $45.8 billion.

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Pratt & Whitney's F135 Engine Powers First Flight Of Production F-35 Aircraft

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Pratt & Whitney's F135 Engine Powers First Flight Of Production F-35 Aircraft
(NSI News Source Info)

EAST HARTFORD, Conn.,

- March 1, 2011:

Pratt & Whitney's F135 conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) production engine powered the successful first flight of a production F-35 aircraft on Friday, Feb. 25. This milestone marks the introduction of Pratt & Whitney's F135 production engines into service. Pratt & Whitney is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX - News) company.

"The first flight of a production F135 engine and F-35 Lightning II aircraft is another important milestone and is indicative of the transition of the program from a pure development phase," said Bennett Croswell, vice president of F135/F119 Engine Programs, Pratt & Whitney. "We are one step closer to getting this magnificent aircraft to the war fighter. I am proud of the F135 team and our partners at Hamilton Sundstrand and Lockheed Martin for this tremendous program accomplishment. We look forward to seeing the F135-powered Lightning II in operational flight."

During the flight, the CTOL F-35A variant, known as AF-6, underwent basic flight maneuvering and engine tests. Lockheed Martin Flight Test Pilot Bill Gigliotti took off from Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base at 4:05 p.m. EST and landed at 5:05 p.m. The jet will continue flight tests in Fort Worth for about a month before it is accepted by the Air Force.

The F135 is in production and is the only engine powering the F-35 Lightning II flight test program today. The F135 CTOL/CV engine and STOVL propulsion system continues to power the F-35 Lightning II with 620 flight tests and nearly 900 flight test hours. The F135 has powered all 41 vertical landings and the F135 engine is demonstrating excellent reliability, performance and thrust response. To date, Pratt & Whitney has delivered 16 production F135 engines, including the first four production STOVL propulsion systems.

Pratt & Whitney has designed, developed and tested the F135 to deliver the most advanced fifth generation fighter engine for the United States and its allies around the world. Based on the highly successful F119 powering the F-22 Raptor, the F135 has been further enhanced with technologies developed in several U.S. Air Force and Navy technology programs.

Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines. United Technologies, based in Hartford, Conn., is a diversified company providing high technology products and services to the global aerospace and building industries.

This press release contains forward-looking statements concerning future business opportunities. Actual results may differ materially from those projected as a result of certain risks and uncertainties, including but not limited to changes in the Lightning II funding related to the F-35 aircraft and F135 engines, changes in government procurement priorities and practices or in the number of aircraft to be built; challenges in the design, development, production and support of technologies; as well as other risks and uncertainties, including but not limited to those detailed from time to time in United Technologies Corporation's Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: BAE Systems Receives U.S. Air Force Contract For Crashworthy Seats On C-130s

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: BAE Systems Receives U.S. Air Force Contract For Crashworthy Seats On C-130s
(NSI News Source Info)

WARNER ROBINS, Ga.

- March 1, 2011:

BAE Systems has received an $8.4 million U.S. Air Force contract to provide crashworthy seats for C-130 aircraft. The specially designed seats will help protect crewmembers in the event of mishaps or hard landings. The company will develop, test, and install as many as 88 seat systems to enhance the survivability of the crew during normal, emergency, and combat operations.

This work builds on BAE Systems’ strong history of performance in support of the C-130 community. The company has designed, supported, and completed more than 200 modifications to C-130 variants over the past 12 years.

The contract was awarded by the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia. The work will be conducted at BAE Systems operations in Crestview, Florida; Mojave, California; and Phoenix, Arizona.

“This important readiness and sustainment contract will provide a cost-effective, rapidly deployable solution for the warfighter,” said Gordon Eldridge, vice president and general manager of Aerospace Solutions at BAE Systems Support Solutions. “This win also builds on our support to the Tactical Airlift Division, a key customer at the Air Logistics Center.”

The new seat systems are needed by the Air Force to ensure the safety of the aircrew during emergencies. The ability of the crew to survive unhurt, facilitated by crashworthy seats, is paramount during extreme landing situations and for quick evacuations from the aircraft.

BAE Systems Support Solutions provides a range of services to meet needs in readiness and sustainment and operational support across the land, aviation, maritime, and C4ISR domains, supporting the U.S. Department of Defense and federal agencies. Support Solutions is also a leading non-nuclear ship repair, modernization, and conversion company, serving the U.S. Navy and other maritime customers.
