DTN News: Thailand TODAY April 23, 2010 ~ Thailand Blasts Blamed On 'Terrorists'

DTN News: Thailand TODAY April 23, 2010 ~ Thailand Blasts Blamed On 'Terrorists' Source: DTN News / Int'l Media (NSI News Source Info) BANGKOK, Thailand - April 23, 2010: A Thai government spokesman is blaming "terrorists" for a series of explosions that killed one person and injured 86 in Bangkok on Thursday, but stopped short of blaming anti-government Red Shirt protesters. Red shirt protester stands guard at the anti- government camp as Thai riot police move closer early morning as the tense standoff continues on April 23, Bangkok,Thailand. A series of coordinated grenade attacks left 3 dead and several injured overnight. The Thai army has stated that decisive measures to get control of the streets might be used against the anti-government protestors besieging the business sector of the Thai capital for more than six weeks. Panitan Wattanayagorn said the blasts were under investigation and it was too soon to come to any conclusions. "This is the work of the terrorists that the government has always been wanting to get rid off," he said. The late-night attacks involved five M-79 grenades shot from a location near where anti-government protesters have been encamped for weeks. The first three blasts tore through an elevated train station on Silom Road, known as Thailand's Wall Street. Soldiers who were stationed in the area helped passengers flee the station after the explosions. Two later blasts struck an intersection filled with bystanders and a group of demonstrators who oppose the Red Shirts. Nearby elevated train and subway stations were closed Friday and the head of a key security agency, Tharit Pengdit, urged the public to avoid the area near the protests. He warned that anyone involved in "terrorism" will face the death penalty. On Friday morning, traffic was light in the normally jammed four-lane thoroughfare, and even many small-time food vendors had left their patches of pavement. The Red Shirts, who are drawn from rural areas, are demanding that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva resign and new elections be held. They have been rallying in Bangkok since March 12 and have staged a number of dramatic protests. In mid-March, the protesters started collecting donated blood, which was later tossed at government buildings. The protesters have also swarmed the prime minister's home and stormed parliament, forcing several government officials to escape by helicopter. The Thai army has issued warnings to the protesters that it will break up the street demonstrations. The demonstrators are in violation of several laws, including a state of emergency. Travel warning The Department of Foreign Affairs is warning Canadians to avoid "non-essential travel to central Bangkok's commercial business district" because of the ongoing protests and the "significant risk of violent clashes and further unrest" in the area.

DTN News: Jordan Confirms Grad Rocket Strike Close To Aqaba

DTN News: Jordan Confirms Grad Rocket Strike Close To Aqaba Source: DTN News / By Haaretz Correspondents and AP , By Amos Harel, Avi Issacharoff and Revital Levy-Stein (NSI News Source Info) JERUSALEM, Israel - April 23, 2010: Two rockets were fired from the Sinai Peninsula toward Eilat early yesterday morning. One fell near the Jordanian city of Aqaba, the second fell into the bay. No one was hurt. This was the first time a rocket has been fired at the resort town in almost five years. Jordanian officials confirmed that the rockets, probably Soviet truck-mounted 122-mm Grad-class Katyushas, were launched at about 5 A.M. and that one struck a refrigerated warehouse on the outskirts of Aqaba. The rocket launches were heard on the Israeli side of the border, in the Eilat region, but the Israel Defense Forces said it did not know their exact landing places. After combing the area, security forces ruled out a landing in Israeli territory. Military sources say the rockets were probably launched from northern Sinai, a few kilometers from the Israeli border. Both Jordan and Egypt initially denied that any rockets had been fired. Only in the evening did Jordan's Information Minister, Nabil al-Sharif, say that initial investigations indicate that a Russian-designed Grad rocket was fired from beyond Jordan's borders. He said authorities were continuing their investigation to determine the exact location of the launch site. Aqaba residents reported hearing at least two early-morning explosions in the city. Eilat residents reported hearing explosions at around 5 A.M. An Israeli border supervisor at the Taba border crossing ordered police to close down the crossing into Egypt and to warn tourists in the area. Israeli sources said they believe that World Jihad militants in Sinai were responsible for the rockets, which targeted Israel. Jordanian tourist resorts, which World Jihad has attacked in the past in a bid to weaken the monarchy, might have been the intended target, however. The incident occurred a few hours before a meeting between Jordan's King Abdullah II and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, in Sharm el-Sheikh. Tensions were high in the area: Last week Jerusalem urged Israelis vacationing in Sinai to leave immediately, citing concrete evidence of plans to kidnap Israelis in the Egyptian region. A tour guide at the Taba crossing reported hearing two explosions there terminal at about 5 A.M. "The first was dull and two seconds later a very close one sounded, causing the windows at the terminal to shudder. It sounded like a rocket landing rather than a launching," he said.

DTN News: U.S. Military Tests X-37B Reusable Spaceship

DTN News: U.S. Military Tests X-37B Reusable Spaceship Source: DTN News / Reuters By Irene Klotz (NSI News Source Info) CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida - April 23, 2010: An unmanned Atlas rocket carrying a miniature space shuttle blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Thursday on a technology test flight that could last as long as nine months. The 20-story rocket, built by United Launch Alliance -- a joint venture of Lockheed Martin Corp and Boeing Co -- lifted off at 7:52 p.m. EDT and soared over the Atlantic Ocean, heading toward orbit. The Air Force Space Command, based in Colorado Springs, which will oversee the mission of the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle, has classified details of the prototype shuttle's payload, experiments and planned orbital operations. The point of the project, started by NASA in the late 1990s and later adopted by the military, is to test a next-generation space shuttle -- the world's only reusable operational spaceship -- to try to trim time between flights and cut costs, said Gary Payton, Air Force deputy undersecretary for space programs. "Probably the most important demonstration is on the ground, see what it really takes to turn this bird around and get it ready to go fly again," Payton told reporters. NASA's space shuttles take several thousand engineers and technicians three to four months to prepare for flight. But the X-37B is not meant to carry people. The military is looking at the vehicle as a way to test new equipment, sensors and materials in space, with an eye to incorporating them into satellites and other operational systems. Officials also would like to cut the turnaround time between space flights from months to days. The X-37B looks like a space shuttle orbiter, with a similar shape and payload bay for cargo and experiments. But it measures 29 feet, 3 inches in length and has a 15-foot (4.5-meter) wing span, compared to the 122-foot (37-meter) orbiters with wing spans of 78 feet. Unlike NASA's space shuttles which can stay in orbit about two weeks, X-37B is designed to spend as long as nine months in space, then land autonomously on a runway.
