(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - December 31, 2012: Celebrations are being held around the world to mark the new year, with the city of Auckland in New Zealand holding the first major events of 2013.

Crowds began to gather on Monday evening in Sydney in anticipation of the city’s famous firework display.

Big shows are also planned in many other cities globally.

Celebrations will also be held for the first time in Burma, where large public gatherings were banned by its previous military rulers.

Tens of thousands are expected to attend the celebrations in Rangoon, which will feature a fireworks display and performances by Burmese entertainers.

Reports say the festivities will be broadcast live on Burmese television.

The celebration is seen as the latest sign of the country’s liberalisation under its military-backed civilian government.

However, there is a subdued atmosphere in the Indian capital Delhi, following the death last week of a 23-year-old victim of a brutal gang rape.

The army has cancelled its celebrations across the country, as have the governments in the states of Punjab and Haryana.

Thousands of residents and clubs have also called off new year celebrations. protests over the case continued on Monday.

Later on, festivities will be held in European cities including Moscow, Paris and London.

More than two million people are expected to be on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach.

New York will mark the new year with the traditional New Year’s Eve countdown and ball drop over Times Square.

DTN News - RUSSIA DEFENSE NEWS: Russia To Enlarge Output of Sukhoi Su-34 Bombers In 2013

DTN News - RUSSIA DEFENSE NEWS: Russia To Enlarge Output of Sukhoi Su-34 Bombers In 2013
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by Roger Smith from reliable sources Kyiv Post
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - December 29, 2012: The Novosibirsk aircraft plant of the Sukhoi Holding (NAPO) will increase the output of Sukhoi Su-34 multirole bombers in 2013, a source in the defense sector told Interfax-AVN on Saturday.

"In 2013 the Su-34 production at NAPO will be larger than in 2012," the source said.

"While setting off batch production of Su-34, NAPO is constantly enlarging their output," he said.

NAPO made two Su-34 aircraft in 2009, four in 2010, six in 2011 and ten in 2012, the source said.

NATO is executing two state contracts: one to make 32 aircraft before 2013 and the other to make 92 aircraft before 2020. "The total order is 124 aircraft," the source said.

"The introduction of new cost saving technologies and equipment, the so-called smart manufacturing, is a token of a larger output of Su-34," he noted.

The Su-34 multirole fighter bomber is capable of destroying land, sea and air based targets in any geographic location regardless of the time of the day and weather conditions with the entire range of air-based weaponry, including high-precision. The active protection system and advanced computers of the generation 4+ aircraft assist in precision bombing and maneuvering while under enemy fire. Perfect aerodynamics, large capacity of internal fuel tanks, in-flight refueling ability, and extra fuel tanks increase the range of aircraft operation to the range of medium-range strategic bombers.

The aircraft has high flight and technical characteristics and maneuverability, long-range targeting systems, and a modern system for cockpit communication and data exchange with ground control stations, Army units, ships and aircraft. Su-34 carries highly efficient long-range multi-channel guided air-to-surface and air-to-air weaponry. It has an intelligent system of radar countermeasure and defense. Su-34 has high survivability and an armored cockpit. New air weapons will be installed in Su-34 to build up its combat potential.

DTN News - MID EAST HOT SPOTS: Iran Begins Naval Maneuvers Near Strait of Hormuz

DTN News -  MID EAST HOT SPOTS: Iran Begins Naval Maneuvers Near Strait of Hormuz
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by Roger Smith from reliable sources Todays Zaman
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - December 28, 2012:  Iran's state TV is reporting the country's navy has begun maneuvers in the area of the Strait of Hormuz, where one-fifth of the world's oil passes.

It says the maneuvers began early Friday, involving warships, submarines jet fighters and hovercrafts.

The drills come as the West increases its pressure over Iran's nuclear program. The West suspects it may be aimed at producing nuclear weapons, a charge Iran denies.

Iran has threatened to close the straits over Western sanctions but has not repeated the threats lately.

DTN News - BOEING DEFENSE NEWS: Boeing To Provide 2 More C-40A Transport Aircraft To US Navy
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by Roger Smith from reliable sources Boeing
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - December 27, 2012: Boeing [NYSE: BA] has received a $145 million order from the U.S. Navy for two additional C-40A Clipper transport aircraft, increasing the service's ability to move military personnel and cargo around the world. The modified Next-Generation 737-700 aircraft will be the 13th and 14th C-40As in the Navy's Unique Fleet Essential Airlift Replacement Aircraft Program, which is replacing the Navy Reserve's aging fleet of DC-9-based C-9B Skytrains.

"The C-40A offers superior performance and range, 21st century avionics and quiet, fuel-efficient engines, and is increasing the Navy's capability for rapid response," said Andy Reheis, Boeing Global Transport and Executive Systems program manager. "Boeing looks forward to continuing our support of the Navy and meeting the service’s airlift needs."
The C-40A is certified to operate in an all-passenger configuration, an all-cargo variant, or as a "combi" that accommodates both cargo and passengers on the main deck.
The Boeing 737 aircraft in the C-40A program are manufactured by in Renton, Wash., and sent to the company"s facility in San Antonio for modifications and certification. Boeing delivered the first C-40A to the Navy Reserve in 2001. Boeing also provides contractor logistics support for the C-40A fleet with industry partners Delta Technical Operations and J.K. Boeing C-40A related info:

The Navy required a Navy Unique Fleet Essential Airlift Replacement Aircraft (the NUFEA-RA Program). This aircraft, since designated the C-40A, was required to replace the aging C-9 fleet. Boeing offered the 737-700 new technology aircraft in response to the Navy’s request for proposal. The Navy did not request and Boeing did not specify any particular equipment to be designated by manufacturer and model number except the basic aircraft itself. Instead, general capabilities and performance requirements were specified.

The C-40A, a derivative of the 737-700C, that will accommodate 120 passengers, eight pallets of cargo, or a combination configuration consisting of 3 pallets and 70 passengers. The 737-700C is modified with a large cargo door and the strengthened wings and landing gear of the 737-800. The aircraft has a range of 3,400 NM with 5,000 lbs. of cargo and provides long range, high priority logistical airlift in support of Fleet activities.

Congress approved funding for the first four aircraft in 1997. A contract for two C-40As was signed in August 1997, with an option for a third. Delivery of the first aircraft was made in December 2000. On July 30, 1999, Boeing Defense and Space Group was awarded a $43,700,000 modification to the previously awarded contract for the procurement of one C-40A aircraft, to be delivered by August 2001. Five aircraft have been ordered; a sixth aircraft was funded in the FY 2001 budget.

The C-40A is able to carry 121 passengers or 40,000 pounds of cargo, compared with 90 passengers or 30,000 pounds for the C-9. In addition, the maximum range for the Clipper is approximately 1,500 miles more than the C-9. It has a fully digital "glass" cockpit that will allow for future growth and is also fitted with a head-up display, allowing pilots to keep their eyes up and outside in low-visibility approaches. One major improvement is the C-40A's navigation system includes GPS, which will aid in approaches to airports in Third World countries with older, less reliable ground systems.
