(NSI News Source Info) LONDON, United Kingdom - July 21, 2010: Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. today announced its German Multi-Role Helicopter Team (GMRHT), consisting of several partnership agreements that will work together to introduce the Cyclone multi-role helicopter into Germany. The team collectively is offering a comprehensive solution for the requirements of the German Navy and Air Force. Sikorsky Aircraft is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX). In June, Sikorsky finalized partnership agreements with Tier One German and European defence companies, Rheinmetall Defence Group, RUAG, MTU Aero Engines (MTU), and ZFL. “Together with General Dynamics Canada, our international integrated mission systems partner, the team is continuing to identify and select German companies to partner with on this initiative,” said Joseph Gigantelli, Sikorsky Vice President, European Sales. “We believe we have a strong team and an equally strong offering of products and services for the German armed forces. We intend to provide Germany with the best technology that is available in-country and from around the world, and in doing so, provide a technologically superior aircraft.” The Cyclone helicopter provides multi-mission capabilities including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and search and rescue. The aircraft is a derivative of the S-92® helicopter, which gets its basic design from the BLACK HAWK helicopter, a proven, rugged and durable aircraft. Among the features of the Cyclone aircraft are enhanced rotor and drive designs, bird strike protection, a flaw- and damage-tolerant design, and protection from turbine bursts. In addition, the aircraft have crashworthy seats, crash-resistant fuel systems, and High Intensity Radio Frequency (HIRF) and lightning protection. Sikorsky has been growing its European business activities over the last several years. In 2007, PZL Mielec in Poland became a Sikorsky company and is the future manufacturer of the S-70iTM BLACK HAWK helicopter. Sikorsky also is actively exploring business opportunities for strategic European partners for component manufacturing and service centers for the entire Sikorsky product line. The contract was awarded to Northrop Grumman's Naval and Marine Systems Division by the German Navy procurement authority through the responsible naval departments. The new 10-ship contract follows the successful completion of a four-year, $4.3 million program, under which the existing radars on 70 German navy ships were replaced by the company's Sperry Marine BridgeMaster™ E radar sets. Under the new contract, Northrop Grumman will install its new-generation Sperry Marine VisionMaster™ FT radar systems on 10 additional German Navy ships. Two of the vessels will be fitted with the company's unique dual-channel radar technology, which permits two independent asynchronous radar units to be displayed and controlled on a single console. (NSI News Source Info) DUSSELDROF, Germany - October 10, 2009: Rheinmetall Defence has booked an order from the German Navy for another twelve MLG 27 light naval guns. The order is worth around €11.6 million.
Four new F125-class frigates will each be equipped with two new MLG 27 guns. Another four will be integrated into the German Navy's new combat supply ship, the Bonn. The frigates will be delivered starting in 2014.
By April 2012 – including earlier orders – Rheinmetall will have supplied the German Navy with a total of 99 light naval guns for various classes of surface combatants. Since its international market breakthrough in 2007, three foreign governments have ordered 49 of these guns, some of which are already entering service.
This state-of-the-art 27mm naval weapon system provides navies with a reliable self-defence capability in new operational scenarios such as counterterrorism, combating piracy and stopping smugglers.
The combination of a dynamic gun carriage, high-precision optics and highly advanced ammunition technology assures effective engagement of light, agile surface targets in all sorts of scenarios. The MLG 27 can be installed on practically any surface combatant without penetrating the deck. The system can be remotely operated from a command unit, and is equipped with day/night target tracking sensors which permit automatic tracking of targets as well as manual control of the system.

(NSI News Source Info) April 6, 2009: EADS Defence & Security (DS) will modernize the identification systems of the Bulgarian armed forces in order to avoid friendly fire and increase air traffic security. As reported today, Defence Electronics (DE), an integrated activity of DS, has been awarded a contract worth approx. € 14m by the Bulgarian company Promax99 covering the delivery of new technology identification (Identification Friend or Foe = IFF) systems. The MSSR 2000 I systems (MSSR = Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar) are capable of the latest air traffic control and NATO Mode S and Mode 5 standards. They will be integrated in Ground and Naval platforms.

Identification systems automatically exchange data such as origin, course, speed etc., thus enabling precise identification. This data exchange in the military field is based upon encrypted signals which cannot be analyzed or jammed by hostile forces. This complements the information supplied by other sources and in this way improves monitoring of crisis regions. Since one’s own forces can be identified quickly and reliably, accidental attacks on own or allied forces can be avoided, above all during multinational operations.
“Due to the increasing complexity of combat situations and scenarios, identification is today an existential matter during all military operations,” explained Bernd Wenzler, CEO of DE. “And thanks to those equipment, Bulgaria will be able to actively participate in future NATO operations.”
DE has delivered many IFF systems to several NATO nations for ground and naval applications. For example, the MSSR 2000 I interrogator is deployed on German naval vessels and by the naval forces of France, Norway and Finland for the military friend-or-foe identification (IFF). Furthermore EADS Defence & Security is also active in the field of civil Air Traffic Control. DE’s identification systems are used for air traffic control in such countries as Portugal and the Philippines.

(NSI News Source Info) March 1, 2009: Rheinmetall Defence has received an order to equip two more German Navy mine-hunters with Mass naval protection systems. (Mass stands for "Multi Ammunition Softkill System".) By June 2009, one MJ 333-class vessel and one HL 352-class vessel will each be equipped with a Mass two-launcher configuration with integrated detection unit. The order is worth around EUR 8 million.
In the wake of successful sea trials, the German Ministry of Defence already contracted with Rheinmetall in 2008 to equip two German Navy mine countermeasures ships with the Mass system. This was in response to an immediate operational requirement, the Unifil operation off the coast of Lebanon. With this follow-on contract, the German Navy is now well on the way to equipping all eight vessels in this class with Mass technology, reflecting the top priority it attaches to Force Protection.
The Type 333 Kulmbach class is a class of five German Navy ships. Built as Type 343 Hameln class minesweepers, they have been upgraded to minehunters using Seefuchs expendable drones to detonate detected naval mines.
Mass means superior protection
Guided missiles pose an increasing threat to naval vessels and civilian shipping alike. Mass protects ships against advanced sensor-guided weapons on the high seas and in littoral zones, as well as from asymmetric threats. Mass works by firing decoys that divert incoming missiles from their intended targets. Fully automatic, the Mass naval countermeasures system offers substantial tactical, operational and logistical advantages, and can be installed on all types of ships. It can be integrated into existing command and control systems or serve as a stand-alone system. Programmable and omni-spectral, the Mass system's innovative ammunition provides protection in all relevant wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum (radar, infrared, laser, electro-optic and ultraviolet).
Mass with integrated detection unit
Featuring an integrated detection unit, the "Mass ISS_Integrated Sensor Suite" represents an innovative departure in naval electronic warfare. Jointly developed by Rheinmetall Defence and Saab Avitronics, this new version of Mass comes with sensors capable of detecting both radar and laser threats.
The state-of-the-art detection unit consists of an SME 100 electronic measurement support system, which will replace the existing radar warners on board the mine hunters; it also comprises the naval laser warner system NLWS. Furthermore, the Mass version deployed on German Navy mine hunters will be linked to an existing electro-optical sensor system, the MSP 500, or "Multi Sensor Platform", which is also made by Rheinmetall. As a result, Mass_ISS will make it possible not merely to detect incoming threats, but to classify them by category and type while automatically engaging them. This is the first time that Mass_ISS will be integrated into a mine hunter.
Since launching Mass onto the market in 2003, Rheinmetall has concluded contracts with eight nations for a total of 102 launcher units destined for 15 different classes of vessel, ranging from corvettes and frigates to mine hunters and patrol boats.
Mass has already been successfully introduced into the navies of Germany (K130 corvettes, F123 frigates, mine hunters), Finland (Squadron 2000), Norway (Skjold missile torpedo boats), Sweden (Visby-, Göteborg- and Malmö-class vessels), the United Arab Emirates (the Baynunah programme), Oman (Khareef-class ocean patrol vessels) as well as into two other navies in the Middle East.
