(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 24, 2013:  Eight soldiers were killed and 13 were injured, seven of them seriously, when two militants opened fire on an Army convoy on the outskirts of Srinagar, just a day before a visit by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

The Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the terror attack but central intelligence agencies believe that the terror group acted on behalf of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The militants opened fire on the second of three Army vehicles before racing away on a motorcycle. They, however, ran into a police check-post about five kms away. They then lobbed a grenade and opened firing, which resulted in injuries to a CRPF officer and a Jammu and Kashmir Police officer. Abandoning the motorcycle, the men fled in a car with tinted windows.

The Jammu and Kashmir police allege that the soldiers who were attacked were unarmed because they were returning from vacation. The Army denies this but has not offered an explanation for why the soldiers didn't return fire.

Sources also say that the armed escort for the soldiers was traveling at a distance, which made the attack easier.

"Hizbul  Mujahideen  claiming responsibility creates less complications for Pakistan," a senior security official told NDTV.

Sources involved with the investigation tell NDTV that one of the two militants seems to be from Pakistan. The other was allegedly dressed in khaki trousers and a black jacket, most likely to suggest that he was a police officer.

Today, the PM and Mrs Gandhi will address a public rally in Kishtwar.  During his two-day trip, the PM will also inaugurate a train service between Qazigund and Banihal.

India - August 8, 2009: Indian authorities arrested two suspected members of the outlawed Hizbul Mujahideen militant group who were allegedly planning attacks in the capital New Delhi, police said Friday. Around a dozen Kashmiri militant groups gathered publicly to urge Pakistan to lift bans against the Islamist organisation India blames for the Mumbai attacks and its political arm. "We appeal on the government of Pakistan to lift the ban against Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) because no Kashmiri jihadi organisation was involved in the Mumbai attacks," Syed Salahuddin, head of the militant Hizbul Mujahideen, told the gathering of around 1,000 people. The suspects, identified as Javed Ahmed and Ashiq Ali, were taken into custody in New Delhi on Thursday night, police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told AFP. "The two men are residents of Indian-administered Kashmir and had been trained in Pakistan by Hizbul Mujahideen," senior police official P.N. Aggarwal told reporters. "They were planning militant attacks in New Delhi." The Hizbul Mujahideen, the biggest militant group in disputed Kashmir, wants the region to become part of mainly Muslim Pakistan. India and Pakistan both rule the Muslim-majority Himalayan region in part but claim it in full. The arrests came amid tightened security ahead of India's Independence Day on August 15 marking the country's independence from Britain in 1947. Hundreds of extra police and paramilitary forces have been deployed across New Delhi following intelligence reports suggesting a series of possible attacks by Islamist groups. "We were working in close coordination with intelligence agencies which ultimately resulted in the arrests," a senior police officer said. The home ministry on Thursday issued a "high alert" in three cities including New Delhi. Police said they had seized weapons, explosives and fake passports from the suspects. India steps up security every year ahead of the Independence Day celebrations, especially in the capital and flashpoint areas such as Indian Kashmir where a separatist revolt has raged since 1989. India has blamed Pakistan for repeated attacks on its soil, including last year's assault on Mumbai that left 166 dead. It also accuses Pakistan of arming and training militants in Kashmir -- a charge Islamabad denies.

(NSI News Source Info) SRINAGAR, India - April 26, 2009: More than 30 Islamic militants have crossed into Indian Kashmir from the Pakistan side of the divided region in recent weeks, a captured militant said Saturday. Indian army arrested Shah in Indian-controlled Kashmir and recovered arms and ammunition from him, a top army officer said on Saturday. The infiltration by such a large number of militants is likely to fuel security concerns in Kashmir which is in the middle of a five-stage general election that has been boycotted by Muslim separatists. The first two rounds of voting passed off peacefully but next week polling moves to the region's more sensitive Muslim-majority areas. "In all 120 of us infiltrated into this side of Kashmir," the militant, Sakib Moinullah Shah, told a press briefing arranged by the military in Srinagar. "Thirty-one were militants. Others were porters, guides and those who cut the snow to make way for us," said Shah, a Pakistani national. Shah was captured after a series of gunbattles with the security forces that left 12 of the militants dead. According to the Indian army's senior officer in Kashmir, Brigadier General Gurmit Singh, another six died in an avalanche, leaving a dozen still at large. The porters, guides and snow beaters had all crossed back over the Line of Control that divides Indian- and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. "These guides and porters are paid only after they return," Singh said. Shah said he was a member of Indian Kashmir's most powerful militant group the Hizbul Mujahedin. Kashmir is in the grip of a nearly 20-year old insurgency against Indian rule that has so far left more than 47,000 people dead, according to official figures.
