(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - January 17, 2014: Helicopters and transport aircraft offered to Indian Armed Forces would be the focus of the European Airbus Group at the four-day DEFEXPO 2014 starting February 6. 

In a statement, Airbus said in its first participation in any defence show under its new brand-name Airbus, Airbus Defence and Space, and Airbus Helicopters, it will highlight its AS550 C3 Fennec and AS565 MBe Panther choppers, which are in race for Army and Navy tenders respectively for replacing their light helicopter fleet. 

"Defexpo is an important land, naval and homeland security exhibition for us as it provides an excellent platform to interact with customers and potential partners. From January 1, EADS has rebranded and reorganised to Airbus Group, this will be our first international show under the new brand," said Yves Guillaume, President India, Airbus Group. 

"We are investing in expanding our industrial and engineering footprint here because we regard India as a strategic resource hub for the Group and not just as a market. It is this message of partnership that we would like to take to our audience here via the show," he said. 

Airbus Group comprises three divisions namely Airbus, Airbus Defence and Space, and Airbus Helicopters. While Airbus focuses on commercial aircraft business, Airbus Helicopters (previously Eurocopter) handles all commercial and military helicopter activities. 

The Group will also showcase its C295 tactical transport aircraft, which is being offered by Airbus for IAF's requirement for replacement of the Avro aircraft. 

In UAV section, it will put on display the Tanan 300 is a diesel engine-powered tactical vertical takeoff and landing UAS especially suited for maritime surveillance.

Rainer Farid, vice-president, Eurocopter, sales and customer relations, South Asia told FE, "The company is bidding for Indian military contracts worth up to $8 billion, including a deal that was cancelled in 2007. " According to Farid the company had re-submitted a bid for a $ 600-million deal to sell India 197 Army helicopters and has fielded the AS 550 C3. It is competing against the Russian Kamov-226 and British Italian major Agusta Westland's AW 119 helicopters for the tenders. They will undergo trials in high altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir for the Indian armed forces' requirement for 197 such choppers. Talking to FE, Rainer Farid said, "The AS550 C3 is undergoing trials for the Indian Army and Air Force requirement of reconnaissance and surveillance helicopters. And we are confident that not only the Army but the Air Force will be compliant." "Over the next few months we will also further our relationship with India by exploring opportunities for setting up joint ventures with our long time partners and establish a stronger footprint to provide end-to-end service to the country," he added. The European company is currently in the request for information stage for EC 725, which is Eurocopter's key offering for the Indian multi-role helicopter requirements and the Panther, which is best suited for the requirements of the Indian Coast Guard, said Rainer. The company is also hoping to supply 30 helicopters to the Indian coast guard, for which tenders would opened next year, and added it was also in the race to produce 200 helicopters jointly with the HAL. "We are also bidding for a contract to replace 40 ageing helicopters of the Indian Navy but the process is currently at an initial stage and we are expecting an RFP later this year," Farid said. In the civil space, Eurocopter has successfully formed partnerships in both public and private sector with Pawan Hans Helicopter Limited and Indocopters. These partnerships cover the entire spectrum of helicopter activities, from manufacturing to operations, maintenance and product support. "We are willing to do 100% technology transfer in helicopters and are already in talks with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), and seeking more cooperation with other private companies in India," he added. With reference to both the Indian military and civil markets, the company currently holds a leading position achieved through strong partnerships. In the military space, Eurocopter has had a fruitful association with India for over four decades through two co-operation agreements with HAL, pointed out the company's executive. According to company officials, the relationship started with a licence production enabling HAL to manufacture more than 600 helicopters of the Alouette 3 and Lama type (Cheetah/Chetak), and it has further been strengthened with company outsourcing metallic and composite work packages.

Cheetah and Chetak have been helping the armed forces from Siachen to the Thar desert. Eurocopter will showcase its models of its military range which are proposed to the Indian armed forces. For the replacement for the Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, Eurocopter sees itself being among the frontrunners. “For a good product pay the right price,” said Rainer Farid, senior vice president sales and marketing, Eurocopter. In February 2007, India selected the AS550 C3 Fennec over the Bell 407 helicopter in a deal for 197 helicopters worth 500 million USD. This deal was suspended in June 2007 because of concerns of alleged corruption in the bidding process, and cancelled outright on 6 December 2007. The contract is now being re-competed, and the AS550 C3 is among the helicopters competing for the deal. But, he refused to divulge the price at which Eurocopter is offering the craft. India seeks to buy 197 helicopters for its defence forces and there is no dearth of suitors wanting to grab the project.
