(NSI News Source Info) STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. - November 1, 2010: General Dynamics Land Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has been selected to negotiate a contract with the Israeli Ministry of Defense for Merkava Armored Personnel Carriers (APC).

The competitive procurement process was for the production of Merkava APC hulls, material kit sets and integration of the kits to the vehicle chassis. General Dynamics expects to complete contract negotiations by the end of this year. Production will be performed at the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center in Lima, Ohio. The base contract will be completed by March 2015 or extend to November 2019 if all options are exercised.

The Merkava series of tanks dates to the 1960s, when Israel drew up plans to remove its military-industrial complex from reliance on foreign factories. Israel's economy and national reserves, backed by U.S. military grant aid, allowed it to purchase nearly any land, sea, or air platform and weapon from friendly nations, but Israel's infrastructure was not capable of producing those items domestically.

In 1965, Israel's military establishment began research and development on a domestically-produced tank, the "Sabra" (Hebrew slang for a Jew born in Israel (not to be confused with the modern Sabra tank). Initially, Britain and Israel collaborated to develop the United Kingdom's Chieftain tank that had entered British Army service in 1966. However, in 1969, Britain decided not to sell the tank to Israel for political reasons.

Israel Tal, who was serving as brigade commander after the Suez Crisis, restarted plans to produce an Israeli-made tank, drawing on lessons from the 1973 Yom Kippur War, in which Israeli forces were outnumbered by those of the Middle East's Arab nations. Realizing that they could not win wars of attrition, the Israelis set stringent requirements of crew survivability and safety for the new tank platform.

By 1974, initial designs were completed and prototypes were built. After a brief set of trials, work began to retool the American periodical Armed Forces Journal on May 14, 1977. The IDF did not officially adopt the tank until December 1978, when the first full battalion of 30 tanks was delivered for initial unit training. The Trophy system uses radar to track incoming missiles and fires a projectile to explode the missiles before they reach their target, a military official said. Tests of the system were successful and it will be installed on the latest generation Merkava IV tanks. According the private television station Channel 10 the system is expensive, costing around 350,000 dollars (245,000 euros) per unit. Israel has been searching for a new defence against missiles after Hezbollah militants during the Second Lebanon War scored a number of damaging strikes against the Merkavas, considered one of the strongest tanks in the world. Israel media have reported that of 25 modern guided missiles fired by Hezbollah militants, a quarter penetrated the tank's formidable armour and caused death or injuries among crew members.

(NSI News Source Info) February 23, 2009: If ever there was an idea ahead of its time, the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) might fit the description. “Marines recognized the need for this vehicle since World War II, but it’s only in the last two decades that we’ve had the technology to support it,” said Colonel Keith Moore, EFV Program Manager. He and his team at Woodbridge, Va., are leading the acquisition program for the EFV, a program that falls under the purview of the Marine Corps’ Program Executive Office Land Systems. According to EFV program officials, the vehicle will be the primary means of tactical mobility for the Marine rifle squad during the conduct of amphibious operations and sustained ground combat operations ashore. It will replace the Assault Amphibious Vehicle (AAV). Fielded in 1972, the AAV will be more than 40 years old when the EFV is fielded.
An Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle moves at high-water speed undergoing cold-weather testing in Alaska's Prince William Sound. Program experts said the EFV enables the Navy and Marine Corps team to project power from the sea base in a manner that will exploit intervening sea and land terrain, achieve surprise, avoid enemy strengths and generate never before realized operational tempo across warfighting functions. For many years EFV was a concept waiting for a vehicle. Meanwhile, gap fillers were called in to fill the need. At the time the Marine Corps fielded the AAV, it was already viewed as only an interim solution. The Corps needed a fighting vehicle that could self-deploy or be transported ashore rapidly from Navy amphibious assault ships off the coast. However, the AAV’s slow water speed — the same 6 to 8 knots as the Corps’ World War II amphibious tractors — limited the buildup of combat power ashore from a sea base. Marine Corps leaders knew even before acquiring the AAV that the ideal vehicle would be a high-water-speed amphibian that also could be effective in combat operations on land. That ideal remained a dream because the sophisticated technology required to achieve such a combination were immature or did not exist. The turn of the century, Moore said, heralded technology breakthroughs everyone has waited for. As a new set of prototypes are prepared for delivery in 2010, the vehicle’s reliability growth program can proceed. Projections call for EFV fielding to start in 2015. The Colonel looks forward to the day the Corps will have over-the-horizon deployment capability. That means the amphibious vehicles can deploy from ships more than 20 nautical miles from shore. Offering a much smaller profile for enemy artillery and traveling much faster than the AAV — more than 20 knots compared to only 6 or 7 — the EFV’s arrival on the beach would be almost stealthy by comparison. “We’ll have a vehicle designed for the fight of the day,” the Colonel said. “EFV is customized for the folks who need high-speed transit toward the beach. It will also carry those who don’t have seats in other tactical vehicles.” Moore noted that the EFV will seat 17 warfighters, not coincidentally the same number of people who comprise “a true assault echelon — a reinforced Marine rifle squad — the Marines’ smallest tactical unit. We are the heart of the conventional forces of the Marine Corps, the enabler for joint forcible entry. The EFV also gives us the flexibility to transition from high-intensity to low-intensity conflicts.” The EFV is essential to the Marine Corps mission, according to General James Conway, Commandant of the Marine Corps. He said, “There are programs that are absolutely and vitally important. One of those is our EFV. Navy ships are not going to go closer than 25 miles to another nation’s shore for reasons that have to do with the security of the ships and the safety of the Marines and Sailors aboard. “The EFV is actually a sea skimmer,” he said. “It gets up on a plane at about 30 knots or so and gets us to where we need to go pretty quickly.” Speed represents just one of the EFV’s technological advances. Its once insurmountable design challenges involved its engine, water jets and lightweight composite armor. The vehicle’s powerful compact diesel engine is a turbocharged version of that used on Germany’s Leopard 2, the United Kingdom’s Challenger, France’s Leclerc and Israel’s Merkava tanks. The basic 1,500-horsepower engine was boosted successfully to the 2,700 horsepower needed for the EFV’s high water speed by adding two turbochargers. This makes it the most powerful diesel engine in the world. The vehicle’s water jets were largely the result of technology base work done at the Navy’s David Taylor Research Center at Carderock, Md., 10 to 15 years ago. The three-stage water jets are the most advanced in the world. The EFV’s armor had to be as light as possible to allow the vehicle’s high water speed yet offer a high level of hull protection from enemy machine gun fire and artillery fragments. The answer was composite armor panels made of ceramics, S2 fiberglass and a Kevlar-like woven fabric in three separate layers. The combination weighs less than 20 pounds per square foot compared to typical rolled steel armor that weighs 56 pounds per square foot. “We’re preparing for where the next war’s going to be,” the EFV Program Manager said. “After years of research and preparation, we’re anxious to put the prototypes through their paces.”

(NSI News Source Info) February 20, 2009: Last month, Israel used several of its new Namer IFV (infantry fighting vehicle) in Gaza. This was the first combat experience for the Namer , and it performed as expected. One was used for a forward command post, enabling officers to get close to the fighting and, using several radios and sensors in the Namer, to quickly shift forces and call in air support. The Namer is based on the chassis of older Merkava I and II series tanks that are being retired. Thus Namer will have the thick armor of the Merkava. With the turret removed, a remotely controlled (from inside the vehicle) heavy machine-gun has been added. The Merkava lends itself to this kind of modification, because the engine is mounted in the front and there is already a door in the back of the vehicle. The Namer heavy APC is fitted with modular armor and Trophy active protection system. For the first time active protection system is used as an integral element. Vehicle is also fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems. The Namer offers the same protection level as the Merkava Mk.4.* While the Israelis liked the speed of the Stryker, which they considered ordering, they felt they will still be fighting in urban areas, against Palestinian terrorists, in the next ten years. There, the Namer has an edge, because of its thicker armor. Out in the open, the Stryker has an edge. If the Israelis cannot afford to build enough Namers, they will add armor to their existing supply of M-113 APCs. But based on tests, and the first experience in Gaza, troops prefer the Namer. The Namer carries eleven people (a driver, gunner, vehicle commander and eight infantry). The passenger compartment is also equipped with a stretcher, that enables one casualty to be carried along with a full load of 11 troops. In addition to the remotely controlled 12.7mm machine-gun, there is also a roof hatch on the left forward part of the vehicle, for the commander to use, and also operate a 7.62mm machine-gun. The vehicle also has the Merkava battle management system, as well as four cameras providing 360 degree vision around the vehicle. The remotely controlled machine-gun has a night vision sight. The vehicle also has a toilet, an addition based on troop feedback (and many missions where they had to stay on board for up to 24 hours at a time in combat zones.) Israel has over two hundred Merkava I tanks, the oldest are at least 25 years old. Removing the turret leaves you with a 44 ton Namer, the heaviest IFV ever built. Earlier, Israel had experimented with using T-55 and Centurian tanks as IFVs. This did not work because the engines in these vehicles were in the rear, where the exit doors of AFVs usually are. Thus troops had to enter and exit via top hatches. This was not a good idea in combat. When the older Merkavas became available, IFV conversions were an obvious application. Israeli troops were not happy with their elderly and poorly protected M113 APCs (Armored Personnal Carriers), and were eager to get a safer vehicle. Nearly 40 Nemers have already been delivered, and now Israel plans to produce over a hundred more, in order to equip two combat brigades. The existing Nemers are being used for training. (NSI News Source Info) February 16, 2009: The army's next-generation armored personnel carrier received its baptism by fire during Operation Cast Lead last month. The newest model Namer (Tiger), which is produced locally, joined the Israel Defense Forces' ranks in recent months.
Several dozen are being used in infantry training. Eventually, the IDF is hoping to replace all of its older APCs with the new model. The first infantry brigade to receive the new APC was Golani, which used three such vehicles in a brigade exercise two months ago. The Namer (Tiger) heavy armored personnel carrier is a mayor element of the IDF modernization plan. The latest design of the Namer is based on the Merkava Mk.4 main battle tank chassis. Currently it is one of the most protected APCs in the world. It provides infantry with the level of protection and mobility matching those of the latest main battle tanks. A first batch of production vehicles was delivered in 2008. Israel plans to acquire few hundreds of these heavy armored personnel carriers. Golani soldiers used their veteran Achzarit APCs during most of the offensive in the Gaza Strip, but during the final days of the operation, they also brought some of the new vehicles into battle to test their capabilities. The new APC served as a forward command position for the Golani commander. Some crews received rushed training in order to use the vehicle in Gaza. The IDF has ordered about 130 such vehicles, at a cost of $3 million each, and there are plans to acquire as many as 800.
It is seeking to replace most of the older APCs in use by the ground forces. The Namer is based on the Merkava Mark IV Main Battle Tank chassis and has some of the most sophisticated battle management and protection equipment available. The Namer was developed around the Merkava's hull in part so that ground forces and armor would have both speed and mobility, as well as protection on the battlefield.

(NSI News Source Info) November 9, 2008: The 65t Merkava 4 main battle tank entered full production in 2001 and began operational training with the Israel Defence Force in July 2003. The first battalion of Merkava Mk 4 tanks entered service with the Israel Defence Forces in 2004. The Ministry of Defence plan to manufacture between 50 and 70 Merkava 4 tanks a year and up to 400 tanks may be manufactured in total, although budgetary constraints put these numbers in doubt. The Merkava 4 has been extensively improved including new armour protection and gun and electronics systems.

The Merkava 4 has been extensively improved, in particular with new ballistic armour protection and new gun and electronics systems The Merkava 4 is slightly larger than the Merkava 3 Baz, which has been in service with the IDF since 1990. The Merkava 3 is offered for export by SIBAT based in Tel Aviv. The Merkava 4 is not offered for export but the systems and components are exported. The tank is capable of carrying eight infantry soldiers, a command group or three litter patients (stretcher casualties) in addition to the tank crew of commander, loader, gunner and driver. The tank is capable of firing on the move at moving targets and has demonstrated high hit probability in firing against attack helicopters using conventional anti-tank munitions. Major contractors include: the El Op Electro-Optic Industries subsidiary of Elbit Systems which is responsible for the fire control system; the Israel Defence Force which carries out main construction and system integration and testing; Israel Military Industries for the supply of the main gun, ballistic protection and munitions; Imco Industries for the electrical systems; Urdan Industries for the hull, main turret and castings; and IAI Ramta for protection components. The main part of the tank production, the construction of the hull and integration of all the systems is carried out in the Israel Defence Force workshop. Merkava 4 battle tank weaponry The Merkava 4 has a new all-electric turret developed by Elbit and subsidiary El-Op. Only one hatch is installed in the turret, the commander's hatch. The improved 120mm smooth-bore gun has been developed by Israel Military Industries. The improved Merkava 4 battle tank gun can fire higher power munitions including new 120mm high-penetration projectiles and guided shells. The new gun is an advanced generation of the gun developed for the Merkava 3. A Vidco thermal shroud on the gun reduces bending of the barrel resulting from environmental and firing conditions. The tank carries 48 rounds of ammunition each stored in a protective container. An electrically operated revolving magazine contains 10 ready-to-fire rounds. The range of ammunition includes APFSDS-T M711 (CL 3254), the HEAT-MP-T M325 (CL 3105) and the TPCSDS-T M324 (CL 3139) supplied by the Ammunition Group of Israel Military Industries. The gun is also capable of firing French, German or US 120mm rounds. The tank is fitted with 7.62mm machine guns and an internally operated 60mm mortar system developed by Soltam Ltd. The mortar can fire explosive and illumination rounds to a range of 2,700m. The protection suite includes an advanced electromagnetic threat identification and warning system. El Op fire control The new fire control system, developed by El Op, includes very advanced features including the capability to acquire and lock onto moving targets, even airborne helicopters, while the tank itself is on the move. The computer-controlled fire control system includes line-of-sight stabilisation in two axes, a second-generation television sight and automatic thermal target tracker, a laser range finder, an improved thermal night vision system and a dynamic cant angle indicator. The commander's station is fitted with a stabilised panoramic day and night sight. The integrated operating system includes advanced data communications and battle management. Tadiran developed the Merkava's communications system, the inter communication system and the VRC 120 vehicular transceiver radio with embedded auxiliary receivers . The Merkava 4's sensors include radar with four antennas placed around the vehicle. Countermeasures The tank is fitted with the Amcoram LWS-2 laser warning system, with threat warning display installed at the commander's station. This links to the Israel Military Industries POMALS (pedestal-operated multi-ammunition launching system) decoy launcher. One launcher is fitted on either side of the tank, which can launch smoke grenades and decoys. A Merkava 4 has also been fitted with the Rafael Trophy Active Protection System. Trophy provides 360° coverage against anti-tank rockets, anti-tank missiles and tank HEAT (high-explosive anti-tank) rounds. Once Trophy has detected a threat, it is tracked and classified and the optimal intercept point is computed, prior to launching a countermeasure. Sensors include radar with four antennas placed around the vehicle. The system development was completed in April 2007 and the IDF has approved production for fitting on new Merkava tanks. The Trophy system entered low-rate initial production (LRIP) in June 2008 and is planned to achieve initial operating capability in late 2009. GD 883 V-12 diesel engine The Merkava 4 is powered by a V-12 diesel engine rated at 1,500hp. The engine compartment and one fuel tank are at the front of the tank and two fuel tanks are at the back. The new engine represents a 25% increase in power compared to the 1,200hp powerpack installed on the Merkava 3. The German company MTU manufactures the engine components and the GD 883 engine is manufactured under licensed production by General Dynamics Land Systems in the USA. The engine is transferred to Israel for installation and integration with the automatic transmission and with the engine computer control system. The tank has automatic five-gear transmission rather than four gears as in the Merkava 3. The transmission system is manufactured by Renk. The single position rotary shock absorbers are installed externally. Hull The redesign of the hull around the installation of the new powerpack has provided improved frontal armour protection and improvement to the driver's field of view. For improved reverse driving the driver uses a camera. The Merkava 4 is powered by a V-12 diesel engine rated at 1,500hp. A new feature of the tank is that the fitted modular special armour covers the turret. The tank is protected against a range of threats, including air-launched precision-guided missiles and advanced and top-attack anti-tank weapons. Automatic fire detection and suppression has been installed. The underside of the hull has been fitted with additional armour protection against mines. The driver and crew compartments are equipped with heating and cooling air conditioning and a Shalon Chemical Industries combined individual and overpressure protection systems against contamination by NBC warfare.
