(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - March 12, 2014The Spanish government approved Friday an expansion of the size and duration of the U.S. military presence at the Moron base in southern Spain.

The Pentagon is authorized to increase the U.S. Marine contingent at Moron from the current level of around 850 troops to as many as 1,100, Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenes told reporters after Friday's Cabinet meeting.

The U.S. military also asked to expand the number of aircraft stationed at the Moron base, he said.

Under the new agreement, the U.S. can keep the troops and aircraft at the base through April 2015.

Morenes recalled that Spain has authorized the size of the U.S. presence at the Rota and Moron bases since 1988, and noted that the use of Moron is related to the instability of North Africa and the Sahel, which affects the interests of both the United States and Spain.

Following the decision of the Spanish government, the U.S. ambassador to Spain, James Costos, issued a communique thanking the people and government of Spain for their continued support for the Marines' rapid-response force at the Moron base.

He said that this group strengthens the efforts to stabilize a geographic region of interest both to the United States and to Spain, and facilitates joint operations by the military of both countries.

Costos said that Spain is "one of the most important allies of the United States and one of its most trustworthy partners." EFE

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: French Army Expects First A400M Airlifter By July 14

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: French Army Expects First A400M Airlifter By July 14
* Airbus Military targets 4 deliveries in 2013, 10 in 2014, 21 in 2015
* CEO hopes A400M to fly at Paris Air Show
* CEO says no signs of nations changing A400M orders

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - May 18, 2013: The French army hopes to receive its first Airbus A400M military transport aircraft in time for the country's annual Bastille Day celebrations on July 14, a Defence Ministry spokesman said on Thursday.

The aircraft, which is about five years behind the original schedule, is also expected to win certification for military use in time for the biennial Paris Air Show starting on June 17, Pierre Bayle said.

The head of EADS unit Airbus Military, Domingo Urena-Raso, confirmed that this timetable was "absolutely reasonable," adding that he expected a total of four deliveries this year, 10 next year and 21 the following year.

France will be the first of the seven nations behind the 20 billion euro ($25.7 billion) project to take delivery of the European military transport and heavy cargo plane. Germany is due to receive its first A400M at the end of 2014.

France has ordered 50 of the planes, and Germany 53. The other countries involved are Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Turkey and Britain.

"Delivery before July 14 would enable a French crew to pilot the French plane above the parade," Bayle said, referring to the traditional Bastille Day military procession.

Airbus Military had said earlier this year it expected to deliver the first of the airlifters to France in the second quarter.

The four turboprop-engine A400M can carry a helicopter, two armoured vehicles or 116 paratroopers. It can land on short, gravel airstrips, making it suitable for transporting troops and equipment to theatres such as Mali or Afghanistan.

The plane has been hit by delays and billions of euros of cost overruns that led to a multinational bailout.

"The A400M got off to a bit of a bumpy start, to say the least, but it's making good progress," Urena-Raso said, adding that there were "no signs" that any of the nations planned to reduce their orders.

He said he hoped the aircraft would fly at the Paris Air Show, adding it had been performing very well in test flights.

DTN News - BAE ~ EADS NEWS: David Cameron On Standby To Save £28bn BAE-EADS Merger

DTN News - BAE ~ EADS NEWS: David Cameron On Standby To Save £28bn BAE-EADS Merger
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by Roger Smith from reliable sources Telegraph UK
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 7, 2012: David Cameron is on standby to try to prevent the collapse of the £28bn merger between BAE Systems and EADS following surprise German demands for the headquarters of the military and aerospace giant to be based in Munich.

The Prime Minister is ready to hold talks with the French president, Francois Hollande, and the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, to settle an agreement between the three governments. Such a move would pave the way for BAE Systems to ask the Takeover Panel for an extension to the Wednesday deadline for a deal to be either agreed or abandoned.
The political threat to the deal is being reinforced by complaints from some BAE investors that they are being kept in the dark about the merger. A number of shareholders have expressed concerns that BAE is negotiating from a position of weakness while some EADS investors feel the terms of the deal are too generous to the British company.
Officials will today make a fresh attempt to resolve the headquarters issue in another tripartite video conference call.
An attempt on Friday to settle outstanding issues went smoothly until Lars-Hendrik Roller, Ms Merkel's chief economic adviser, stunned British and French negotiators by calling for the scrapping of plans to locate the combined company's military headquarters at Farnborough and civil aircraft headquarters at Toulouse. He called for a single base in Munich to be set up instead.
Efforts were made over the weekend to find a solution but if today's talks again end in failure BAE will ask Mr Cameron to intervene and raise the issue with his French and German counterparts, in what is being described by insiders as "make or break time".
The shock was heightened after agreement had been reached on what was seen as the more awkward issue of the size of government shareholdings in the joint venture and an unusual accord between the British and French sides.
Mr Roller and Mr Macron agreed to limit the state holding to 9pc each for France and Germany, or 18pc in total. The UK has no shareholding in either company. This agreement was reached with a view to maintaining state interest while reducing the risk of being frozen out of military orders in the important US market, where Boeing is campaigning to have BAE stripped of its privileged status.
The German official, who had to be talked down from releasing a statement claiming the deal was off, was also said to be upset by France's refusal to provide a written guarantee it would not seek to increase its 9pc shareholding.
Neither BAE nor EADS was willing to comment on the prospects of the deal surviving, either in its present form or with changes.
Governments and unions are worried about the outlook for jobs in a group that would provide employment for 220,000 people, including 50,000 in Britain.

DTN News - LOCKHEED MARTIN DEFENSE NEWS: Eleventh C-5B Inducted To Become Super Galaxy

DTN News - LOCKHEED MARTIN DEFENSE NEWS: Eleventh C-5B Inducted To Become Super Galaxy
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by Roger Smith from reliable sources Lockheed Martin
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 7, 2012: Lockheed Martin inducted the 11th aircraft to the C-5M Super Galaxy production line on Feb. 1, 2012.

Based at Dover Air Force Base, Del., this aircraft has supported the warfighter’s operations across the globe. It has delivered cargo in locations such as Iraq, Italy, Germany, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Qatar, Spain and Turkey.

Aircraft 86-0017 has accumulated more than 18,000 flight hours and more than 4,300 full-stop landings

Mission The C-5 Galaxy is one of the largest aircraft in the world and the largest airlifter in the Air Force inventory. The aircraft can carry a fully equipped combat-ready military unit to any point in the world on short notice and then provide the supplies required to help sustain the fighting force.

Features
The C-5 has a greater capacity than any other airlifter. It has the ability to carry 36 standard pallets and 81 troops simultaneously. The Galaxy is also capable of carrying any of the Army's air-transportable combat equipment, including such bulky items as the 74-ton mobile scissors bridge. It can also carry outsize and oversize cargo over intercontinental ranges and can take off or land in relatively short distances. Ground crews are able to load and off-load the C-5 simultaneously at the front and rear cargo openings, reducing cargo transfer times. Other features of the C-5 are:
   · Able to operate on runways 6,000 feet long (1,829 meters).
   · Five landing gear totaling 28 wheels to distribute the weight.
   · Nose and aft doors that open the full width and height of the cargo
compartment to permit faster and easier loading.
   · A "kneeling" landing gear system that permits lowering the parked
aircraft to facilitate drive-on/drive-off vehicle loading and adjusts the
cargo floor to standard truck-bed height.
   · Full width drive-on ramps at each end for loading double rows of
     vehicles.
   · A system that records and analyzes information and detects
malfunctions in more than 800 test points.

The C-5 has the distinctive high T-tail, 25-degree wing sweep, and four TF39 turbofan engines (C-5A and B) mounted on pylons beneath the wings. These engines are each rated at 43,000 pounds of thrust and weigh 7,900 pounds (3,555 kilograms) a piece. They have an air intake diameter of more than 8.5 feet (2.6 meters). Each engine pod is nearly 27 feet long (8.2 meters).

The Galaxy has 12 internal wing tanks with a total capacity of 51,150 gallons (194,370 liters) of fuel -- enough to fill 6 1/2 regular size railroad tank cars. A full fuel load weighs 332,500 pounds (150,820 kilograms). A C-5 with a cargo load of 270,000 pounds (122,472 kilograms) can fly 2,150 nautical miles, offload, and fly to a second base 500 nautical miles away from the original destination -- all without aerial refueling. With aerial refueling, the aircraft's range is limited only by crew endurance.

BackgroundLockheed-Georgia Co. delivered the first operational Galaxy to the 437th Airlift Wing, Charleston Air Force Base, now known as Joint Base Charleston, S.C., in June l970. C-5s are operated by active-duty, Reserve, and Air National Guard crews. They are currently stationed at Dover AFB, Del.; Travis AFB, Calif.; Lackland AFB, Texas; Martinsburg ANGB, W.V.; Memphis ANGB, Tenn. and Westover Air Reserve Base, Mass.

In March 1989, the last of 50 C-5Bs was added to the 76 C-5As in the Air Force's airlift force structure. The C-5B includes all C-5A improvements as well as more than 100 additional system modifications to improve reliability and maintainability.

Based on a study showing 80 percent of the C-5 airframe service life remaining, AMC began an aggressive program to modernize the C-5 in 1998. The C-5 Avionics Modernization Program included upgrading the avionics to improve communications, navigation and surveillance/air traffic management compliance. The upgrade also added new safety equipment and installed a new autopilot system.

Another part of the C-5 modernization plan is a comprehensive Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program. The centerpiece of this program is the General Electric CF6-80C2 (F-138) commercial engine. This engine delivers a 22 percent increase in thrust, a 30 percent shorter take-off roll, has a 58 percent faster climb rate and will allow significantly more cargo to be carried over longer distances. With its new engine and upgrades, the C-5 becomes the C-5M Super Galaxy. This modernization program will enhance aircraft reliability and maintainability, maintain structural and system integrity, reduce cost of ownership and increase operational capability well into the 21st century.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 18, 2011: The first Airbus Military C295 development aircraft fitted with an Airbone Early Warning sand Command (AEW&C) rotodome has successfully completed its first flight on 7th June 2011 at Airbus Military’s site in Seville (Spain).
The flight follows extensive research and development work, including wind tunnel testing, leading to the conversion of a C295 to be fitted with the in-house developed rotodome The aircraft took off at 17h16 local time (15h16 UTC) and landed at 20h04 local time (18h04 UTC), after a flight lasting 2h48 (wheels off – wheels down). The experimental test pilot Alejandro Madurga captained the flight together with co-pilot Alfonso de Castro, the Flight Test Engineer Juan José Baeza, and the Test Flight Engineer Antonio Ojeda.
The objective of the trials is to verify the aerodynamic and structural impact of the rotodome on the aircraft’s overall structure, handling qualities and performance. The six metre diameter rotodome fitted for the initial trials is a fixed dummy structure. On production aircraft the rotodome would be a fast-rotating device housing a state-of-the-art radar providing full 360 degree and continuous coverage of a selected area. “This first flight confirmed to us that the C295 is an excellent platform to support such a rotodome”, said Alejandro Maurga after the flight.
The behavior of the aircraft and its flying characteristics were very satisfactory and as expected”. Flight testing will continue during the next three months to complete the feasibility study and fully validate the concept.
Airbus Military’s C295 is an ideal platform for Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) missions. The C295 is currently used for other Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance applications such as maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare or environmental protection missions, to list just a few.
