(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - March 31, 2013: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sought support from Mongolia on Saturday in Tokyo's territorial row with Beijing over disputed East China Sea islands, during a visit to the country.

Abe arrived in the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator seeking closer trade and diplomatic ties with the mineral-rich nation, a potentially important strategic partner due to its location on China's northern border and diplomatic ties with North Korea.

"I asked for Mongolian support relating to the Chinese situation and Mongolia expressed its understanding of the Japanese position," Abe said in response to questions from journalists about the islands Japan claims as the Senkakus and China as the Diaoyus.

"I understand the Mongolian situation regarding this issue," he added, at a press conference which followed meetings with Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj and Prime Minister Norov Altankhuyag.

Japan's hawkish leader, who has not held summit meetings with Chinese leaders since he took power in December, also said "the door is open for talks" with China.

On the first of his two-day visit, Abe also discussed North Korea's nuclear ambitions with Mongolia. Pyongyang on Saturday declared it was in a "state of war" with South Korea, warning Seoul and Washington that any provocation would swiftly escalate into an all-out nuclear conflict.

The provocative language follows weeks of dire-sounding pronouncements from the North that have fuelled international concerns that the situation might spiral out of control.

"I explained the Japanese position that the North Korean actions are provocation and we never accept them," Abe said.

During the visit, the first by a Japanese prime minister to Mongolia in nearly seven years, Abe is also aiming to develop closer economic ties with the country.

"During the talks I specifically mentioned expanding economic relations between the two countries," Abe said.

Mongolia has huge mineral deposits at its disposal, and Japan is aiming to secure more fuel resources abroad after its atomic power plans were affected following the Fukushima nuclear crisis, triggered by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

"As Mongolia is rich in natural resources, Japan's technological cooperation will lead to a win-win for both countries," Abe said, according to Kyodo news agency.

China is Mongolia's leading trade partner and source of foreign investment.

DTN News - DISPUTED EAST CHINA SEA REGION SENKAKU / DIAOYU ISLANDS: China Targets Japanese Vessel as Tensions Escalate Over Islands

DTN News - DISPUTED EAST CHINA SEA REGION SENKAKU / DIAOYU ISLANDS: China Targets Japanese Vessel as Tensions Escalate Over Islands
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by Roger Smith from reliable sources By John Brinsley on February 05, 2013  - Bloomberg Businessweek
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 5, 2013: A Chinese patrol boat targeted a Japanese naval vessel with a radar system designed to calculate a range to fire a weapon, Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said.

The Chinese ship used fire-control radar on a Japanese destroyer on Jan. 30, Onodera told reporters today in Tokyo, adding the government will protest China’s actions. He declined to specify the location, which broadcaster NHK earlier reported was near islands that are claimed by both nations.

The episode may undermine recent efforts to ease tensions that have damaged trade ties between Asia’s two biggest economies and brought calls from the U.S. for a diplomatic resolution. Japan today issued a separate protest after Chinese ships entered its waters yesterday.

Illuminating a Japanese ship with fire-control radar is a “risky” move by China because it could invite retaliation, said James Hardy, a London-based Asia-Pacific editor at IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly. “You are assuming the other guy isn’t going to react in a bad way."

Hardy, speaking by telephone from Bangalore, said that “it might be one of these situations where an individual captain on a ship said he was going to make a name for himself or act beyond his remit.”

Onodera called the Chinese move “extremely unusual.” Until now, most contact between Japanese and Chinese vessels has been between Coast Guard ships or other non-military vessels that were either lightly armed or not armed at all.

Shinzo Abe took office as prime minister in December advocating a stronger stance asserting Japan’s claims on the uninhabited East China Sea islands called Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan. The administration plans to increase Japan’s defense budget for the first time in 11 years and boost Coast Guard spending as it copes with mounting incursions by Chinese ships in waters near the islands.

DTN News - JAPAN DEFENSE NEWS: Japan Coast Guard To Boost Its fleet With New EC225 Helicopters

DTN News - JAPAN DEFENSE NEWS: Japan Coast Guard To Boost Its fleet With New EC225 Helicopters
**Japan Coast Guard to boost its fleet with new EC225 helicopters after intensive rescue missions in the wake of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - August 23, 2011: Following intensive relief operations after the Great East Japan Earthquake in March, the Japan Coast Guard, Eurocopter Group and Eurocopter Japan have signed a tripartite contract for the supply of three additional EC225 helicopters to the Japan Coast Guard. These aircraft will be the first civilian helicopters to be equipped with the most advanced mission system, to be deployed for search and rescue as well as law enforcement missions.
Procurement of the EC225s was decided after the Japanese Coast Guard efficiently carried out rescue and relief efforts following the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit the country on March 11, but unfortunately had aircraft submerged during the disaster that were rendered unserviceable. The acquisition will replenish the fleet with new aircraft that have the technology and capability to carry out complex search and rescue (SAR) as well as anti-piracy missions.
"We are very proud to have our helicopters contributing to saving lives every day in Japan,” said Eurocopter President & CEO Lutz Bertling. “The Eurocopter Japan team, which provided round-the-clock support to their customers after the Tohoku tragedy, remains totally committed to ensure that the helicopter missions can be performed in the best and safest conditions."
The Japan Coast Guard initially purchased two EC225s in 2006 through an open tender, complementing their AS332 L1 fleet for long range all-weather SAR missions as well as for ship-borne operations.
“The decision by the Japan Coast Guard to acquire additional EC225s this year was taken in view of its new assignment for anti-piracy missions, while also taking into account the outstanding performance of their existing EC225 helicopters – which have been used intensively since delivery, as demonstrated during the disaster relief operations,” explained Stéphane Ginoux, President and CEO of Eurocopter Japan. “Together, the service’s EC225 and AS332 L1 fleet will be able to continue serving the country and saving lives under severe circumstances.”
When the earthquake struck in March and triggered destructive tsunami waves, Eurocopter Japan immediately set up round-the-clock maintenance shifts to support helicopter operations, ensuring maximum availability of the helicopters to perform their missions. More than half of the helicopters used by fire-fighters, police and coast guards during the disaster relief operations were of Eurocopter origin.
Eurocopter’s twin-engine EC225 is in the 10-11-ton weight category, and features high-performance navigation and mission systems – including a unique digital autopilot; while also offering excellent flight autonomy and a large cabin with seating for 25 persons. As a result, the EC225 and its EC725 military version have become the reference for civil and military search and rescue, off-shore and passenger transport missions not just in Japan, but around the world.
To date, a total of 240 EC225s and EC725s have been ordered, of which approximately half have been delivered. The annual production rate will be increased by 60 percent over the next two-year period to meet market demand.
