(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - July 19, 2013: HMS Astute and HMS Ambush are the first of seven new nuclear-powered British attack submarines to become operational over the next decade.

The Astute class submarines have cost more than £1 billion each and are among the most advanced in the world. They can circumvent the globe without surfacing, carrying a payload of dozens of cruise missiles and torpedoes.

Their sonar is so sensitive that one lurking in the Solent would be able to detect a ship leaving New York harbour 3,500 miles across the Atlantic. Advanced acoustic tiles mean they are virtually silent. They can also stay underwater indefinitely, only needing to surface if the 100-strong crew has run out of food.

The new boats are replacing the Navy's Trafalgar class submarines and the programme has been bedevilled by delays, faults and runaway costs since it began in the mid-1990s.
Naval commanders also faced embarrassment in 2010 when HMS Astute ran aground on rocks off Scotland during sea trials.

Rear Admiral Simon Lister, director of submarines at the Ministry of Defence, said the seven Astute class vessels would be the “backbone of the submarine fleet”.

He said: “They do the power projection, intelligence gathering, patrolling and have that deterrent effect.”

Three more of the 106-yard-long and 7,400 tonne submarines are currently in various stages of production in the vast BAE Systems assembly hall in Barrow-in-Furness and this week the keel was laid for Agamemnon, the sixth submarine. Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria has built 311 Royal Navy submarines since 1901.

Stuart Godden, engineering director, said the programme to build the submarines was Britain’s most complex engineering project and as difficult as a space programme.
He said: “I think it’s at least as complex as the NASA space programme.”

The submarines have no periscope, but are equipped with an array of powerful sensors which can allow them to carry out spying and eavesdropping missions. Each submarine’s electronics means it has more than 60 miles of cabling.

The Astute class is also the first where every submariner gets their own bed, rather than having to “hot bed” and sleep in shifts.

Engineers say the boats can stay underwater indefinitely, with the only limits to dives being the amount of food they carry and the morale and endurance of the crew.

Most patrols from their base in Faslane, Scotland, will be three months long.

Ricki Rotimi, leading chef on HMS Artful which is nearing completion, said his team would cook four meals a day for the entire crew.

He said: “The rubbish thing is when we start running out of fresh vegetables and fruit, but you just have to get on with it.”

The submarines became operational in the week a Liberal Democrat review of Trident concluded that Britain can maintain a credible nuclear deterrent without a like-for-like replacement of its Trident submarine fleet.

The review, led by Treasury Chief Secretary Danny Alexander, said there are alternatives to the UK's current stance of round the clock patrols by nuclear armed submarines.

Philip Hammond, defence secretary, was scathing about the alternatives, saying they would create a “part time deterrent” and save as little as £50 million a year.

HMS Astute and HMS Ambush are the first submarines in Class accepted by Navy Command, which is responsible for operating all of the Royal Navy’s vessels.

The next three submarines in the Class: Artful, Audacious and Anson are all at varying stages of build and today’s keel laying for Agamemnon marks the next key milestone for the programme.

BAE Systems Maritime Submarines (BAES (MS)) is responsible for delivering all seven Astute Class submarines and for the design of the successor to the Vanguard class, which will carry the UK’s nuclear deterrent.

The MoD has agreed a new contract with BAES (MS) that will not only help to sustain the thousands of highly skilled defence jobs based at Barrow-in-Furness but drive down the costs of building future submarines.

Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology Philip Dunne today signed a new contract will deliver £380M of savings over the next eight years.

This will ensure that the Royal Navy’s submarine capability is delivered efficiently and provides good value for money for the taxpayer.

Minister Dunne, said:

“The keel laying of the sixth submarine, Agamemnon, and the handover of HMS Astute and HMS Ambush to the Royal Navy are huge milestones reflecting significant progress in the programme.

“By ensuring the UK’s submarine programme remains affordable, this new contract will help deliver the Astute Class and pave the way for the future Successor nuclear deterrent submarines and secure around 5,000 jobs at BAE Systems and thousands more who work in over 400 suppliers across the UK submarine supply chain.”

Rear Admiral Simon Lister, the MoD’s Director of Submarines, said:

“This is the sixth submarine in the Astute Class and we expect her to be built more quickly and efficiently than her predecessors, demonstrating the effectiveness of the national submarine building capability in Barrow-in-Furness.


“New techniques by skilled staff in the back office and on the shop floor will deliver this key capability for the Royal Navy."

    (NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 20, 2011: AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, is pleased to announce that the first production AW159 helicopter will be making its first appearance at the Paris Air Show. Sixty two AW159s have been ordered by the UK Ministry of Defence for the Army and Royal Navy to fulfil both over land and maritime missions with a common platform. The AW159, whilst building on the pedigree of the current Lynx, is a new 6-tonne multi-role military helicopter featuring a new marinised airframe, all new avionics, new mission sensors and new generation weapon systems. The AW159 programme has achieved several major milestones so far in 2011 and continues on time and on budget ready to deliver the first aircraft to the UK Ministry of Defence at the end of 2011. The first production aircraft performed its maiden flight on 20th April 2011 at AgustaWestland’s Yeovil facility and a further six production aircraft are now undergoing final assembly on a new state-of–art assembly line.
    The three trials aircraft which first flew in November 2009, October 2010 and November 2010 have now completed over 250 flying hours of a 600 hour integrated flight test programme. The three aircraft are set to undertake a number of proving trials in the coming months. Later this month aircraft #1 will start hot and high trials in the USA and aircraft #3 will undertake Shipborne Helicopter Operating Limit (SHOL) trials in October 2011. Aircraft #2s flight testing has been focusing on the successful integration of the avionics and mission sensors and recently completed chaff and flare firing trials. AgustaWestland will start to train initial British Army pilots in early 2012 and the aircraft is set to become fully operational with the Army in 2014 and the Royal Navy in 2015. The British Army’s AW159 Lynx Wildcat will perform a wide range of tasks on the battlefield including reconnaissance, command and control, transportation of troops and materiel, and the provision of force protection. The Royal Navy variant will provide an agile maritime capability providing anti-surface warfare capability and force protection and will operate in support of amphibious operations and be an important element in defending ships against surface threats. There will be a high degree of commonality between the Army and Royal Navy helicopters that will mean that an aircraft can switch roles easily, principally through the changing of role equipment.
    In March 2011 AgustaWestland signed a contract with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to design and develop an integrated training solution for the AW159 Lynx Wildcat helicopter which includes the building and equipping of a state-of-the-art training centre at RNAS Yeovilton in South West England, alongside Royal Navy and British Army AW159 Lynx Wildcat squadrons. The facility will provide training courses for Army aircrew and maintainers starting in January 2013, with training for Royal Navy aircrew and maintainers starting in January 2014. The Lynx Wildcat Training Centre will be equipped to provide air crew and maintainer training using a wide range of synthetic training technology including two Full Mission Simulators (FMS), Flight Training Device (FTD) and Cockpit Procedures Trainer (CPT). All devices will be capable of delivering Army or Royal Navy conversion and mission training. Each of the Full Mission Simulators has six degrees of freedom to provide the acceleration sensations associated with helicopter flying together with a visual system that complies with JAR-FSTD-H Level D, to give highly realistic and cost effective training. The maintenance training facility will be equipped with a suite of synthetic training devices covering the aircrafts mechanical, avionic and weapon systems. The training centre will also contain a suite of briefing rooms, integrated electronic classrooms and a learning management system will be operational and providing training for the Army from early 2013 and for Royal Navy from early 2014. AgustaWestland is also working with the UK MoD to develop an Integrated Operational Support (IOS) solution to provide cost effective through life support for the entire fleet of 62 aircraft. The AW159 programme for the UK MoD continues to be on time and on budget and was the first major project to be awarded under the Strategic Partnering Arrangement signed by the UK Ministry of Defence and AgustaWestland in June 2006. AgustaWestland has also signed partnering agreements with a number of key suppliers on the AW159 programme including Selex Galileo, a Finmeccanica company; GKN Aerospace, LHTEC – a partnership between Rolls-Royce and Honeywell, General Dynamics UK, Thales UK and GE Aviation.

    On June 3 at Portsmouth Naval Base, hundreds of dignitaries and citizens gathered to celebrate the commissioning of HMS Dauntless, the second of six high-tech Type 45 destroyers now entering service. A band played, the crew marched in parade and the ship's captain, Richard Powell, read the traditional "commissioning warrant." There was even cake. But the cheery event belied a looming storm for a naval service that once dominated the world's oceans. On Oct. 19, the U.K. Ministry of Defense announced its long-awaited -- and, for military professionals, long-dreaded -- Strategic Defense and Security Review (SDSR) (.pdf). The end result of the SDSR process is a much smaller fleet and a net reduction in the U.K.'s ability, in the medium term, to influence world events. The implications are enormous for Great Britain and the world. For months, the new Conservative government had warned of deep cutbacks in the Defense Ministry's roughly $63 billion annual budget, part of the government's aggressive plan to rein in decades of deficit spending. "Without healthy finances we can create neither the public services nor the national security we desire," Defense Secretary Liam Fox said in August. Royal Navy observers expected the so-called senior service to lose ships. But few expected cuts as deep as those announced in October. While the six Type 45s would remain, many of the navy's most capable existing warships would go, as would one of two planned aircraft carriers. In a moment, the navy lost two of its three current small aircraft carriers, one of four amphibious landing ships, one-quarter of its frigates and destroyers plus several support vessels. For the ministry, these and other reductions would mean an 8 percent savings in annual defense spending. But the savings translate to a serious reduction in military capability. The Royal Navy and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary support service will now number probably fewer than 100 vessels, down from around 110. This approximately 10 percent cut in ship numbers is deceptively small, for the eliminated vessels are predominantly large ones representing a disproportionate concentration of weaponry and capability. In terms of tonnage, a rough proxy for combat capability, the reduction is closer to one-quarter. "This is a real punch in the gut for the Royal Navy and it has a significant impact on the ability of the United Kingdom to project power and maintain presence abroad," Eric Wertheim, an independent U.S. naval analyst, told World Politics Review. The October cuts will see Britain abandoning at least one previously sacrosanct long-term mission. Since the end of the Cold War, the navy has settled into a deployment pattern reflecting a wide range of security commitments -- and cut ship numbers to the bare minimum needed to fulfill those commitments. In the mid-1980s, the navy had more than 170 ships, including three small aircraft carriers, scores of destroyers and frigates and more than 20 submarines. The fleet was necessarily "deep," with extensive reserves, as it was tailored for waging war alongside NATO against the numerically superior Soviet navy, and anticipated high losses. It was from these reserves that the Royal Navy assembled the 33 warships, plus additional support vessels, that led the successful assault to retake the Falkland Islands from Argentina in 1982. Post-Cold War planning reduced the reserve force to nearly zero and kept all available warships on patrol on no fewer than nine "standing deployments" -- that is, missions requiring the constant attention of at least one warship, and sometimes several. The standing deployments include North Atlantic fisheries protection and a Caribbean counternarcotics patrol, but arguably the two most important are the South Atlantic patrol off the Falklands and the nuclear-deterrence patrol involving at least one ballistic-missile submarine lurking somewhere beneath the Atlantic at all times. In addition to the standing deployments, for several years the Royal Navy has also contributed to two U.S.-led international flotillas: one targeting weapons smugglers in the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf, another aimed at intercepting Somali pirates. As a rule of thumb, a navy can deploy only one-third of its ships at any one time, as the other two-thirds are in maintenance or transiting between patrol zones. Thus the current 11 missions easily occupy the entire fleet. In 2008, London decided on short notice to send an additional frigate to the Somali coast. That meant pulling a warship from the Falklands patrol and replacing it with an unarmed support vessel. With fewer large ships capable of long-range deployments, the navy must drop missions. It's not yet clear which will go, though the Defense Ministry offered some hints in the official fact sheet attached to the security review. "By 2020, the Royal Navy will be structured to provide: maritime defense of the U.K. and our overseas territories, including the South Atlantic; nuclear continuous at-sea deterrence; and a credible and capable presence within priority regions of the world that contributes to conventional deterrence, coercion and containment." In other words, the missile-sub and Falklands patrols will remain. But "credible and capable presence" and "priority regions" are sufficiently vague to place at risk any of the remaining nine deployments. Britain might abandon its previously leading role combating Somali pirates and terrorist weapons smugglers. Or it might end its involvement in counternarcotics patrols. It might even cease all three. In any case, there will be few if any reserve vessels from which to form a task force for large-scale operations. "The role of a Navy is often described as winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas," Wertheim commented. "These cuts will have a negative impact on each of these areas." What's more, the British reductions could leave a security vacuum that the U.S. would feel obligated to fill. That "potentially raises operational requirements for a U.S. Navy already stretched thin," according to Bernard Cole, a professor at the U.S. National War College. The latest nuclear-powered technology means she will never need to be refuelled and can circumnavigate the world submerged, manufacturing the crew's oxygen from seawater as she goes. The submarine has the capacity to carry a mix of up to 38 Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes and Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles, and can target enemy submarines, surface ships and land targets with pinpoint accuracy, while her world-beating sonar system has a range of 3,000 nautical miles (5,500km). The First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, said: "The Astute Class is truly next generation - a highly versatile platform, she is capable of contributing across a broad spectrum of maritime operations around the globe, and will play an important role in delivering the fighting power of the Royal Navy for decades to come.Astute arriving at her home base on the Clyde in November 2009[Picture: LA(Phot) J J Massey, Crown Copyright/MOD 2009] "A highly complex feat of naval engineering, she is at the very cutting-edge of technology, with a suite of sensors and weapons required to pack a powerful punch. "Today is an important milestone along the road to full operational capability which will follow after a further series of demanding seagoing trials testing the full range of the submarine's capabilities." Following the successful completion of her first rigorous set of sea trials, which began at the end of 2009, HMS Astute has also now achieved her in-service date, signalling that she has proven her ability to dive, surface and operate across the full range of depth and speed independently of other assets, thereby providing an initial level of capability. As the base port of all the Royal Navy's submarines from 2016, Faslane will be home to the whole Astute Class, including Ambush, Artful and Audacious which are already under construction. Astute was built by BAE Systems at Barrow-in-Furness, with hundreds of suppliers around the country contributing component parts, including Rolls-Royce, Derby (nuclear plant); Thales UK, Bristol (visual system and Sonar 2076); and Babcock, Strachan & Henshaw, Bristol (weapon handling and discharge system). Astute is affiliated to the Wirral in the North West.
