(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - January 24, 2015For the first time, China is taking part in Asia’s largest military exercise. The annual drill, "Cobra Gold", will involve more than 9,000 troops from the U.S. and six other countries from the region. They will participate in military, humanitarian and civic activities in various parts of Thailand until February 21st.

When the 33rd "Cobra Gold" multinational military exercise is over in a few days time, more than 50 families of Wat Ta Takien School in Thailand's province of Phitsanulok would be extremely happy. They will have a new one-storey multipurpose building for their children. It will be the outcome of four-week joint effort of Chinese, U.S. and Thai soldiers as part of engineering civic assistance projects under this year's exercise.

"There are no boundaries between the nations participating in this military exercise in terms of providing assistance to civilians. Having different nations work together gives us a chance to get to know each other and gain more knowledge," said Yang Bin of the People's Liberation Army.

For the local Thais, this would be the most tangible result of the region's largest military exercise.

China has been an observer in "Cobra Gold" since 2002 but has never taken part in the exercises until now. Although the role of the Chinese troops is limited to humanitarian drills, including providing engineering support and medical aid, many believe that their participation will boost military relations between China and ASEAN.

"In terms of cooperation between the military of the super powers, the U.S. and China, the operating personnel have developed good relationships with each other," said Col. Charnchai Romyen of Royal Thai Army. "With eight countries participating, the exercise will increase regional security, which I think is a great start."

Over the past three decades, "Cobra Gold" has evolved to include disaster relief and rescue operations.

While the ravages of tsunamis, earthquakes and floods have focused much of "Cobra Gold" on practicing humanitarian assistance efforts in recent years, simulated precision strikes and live fire exercises are a reminder of what militaries have always been designed to do.
And this may see China's participation in the coming years ahead go through a transformation process to deeper and more challenging roles.

DTN News - RUSSIA DEFENSE NEWS: Russia Will Test Launch Iskander-M Missiles During March Drills

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - January 19, 2015Missile force battalions of Russia's Central Military District will test launch Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles in the course of military drills after undergoing a command and control training course.

Two missile battalions of the Central Military District (CMD) will test launch a number of Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles during exercises in southern Russia in March, CMD spokesperson Col. Yaroslav Roshupkin said Thursday.
"In early March, after the completion of military training courses, the full-size unit will take part in combat launching exercises at the Kapustin Yar testing range," Roshupkin said.

The spokesperson added that two CMD missile force battalions have arrived at a testing range in Astrakhan Region to undergo an Iskander-M command and control training course ahead of the drills.

The units were fully equipped with Iskander-M theater ballistic missile complexes last November.

Following tactical drills, the missile forces are expected to return to their home base in Orenburg Region, which is fitted with the infrastructure needed to house the Iskander-M complexes, Roshupkin said.

Also known as SS-26 Stone, the Iskander is a powerful missile strike system with "quasi-ballistic" capability in use by the Russian Ground Forces. The missiles have a range of 400 km (250 miles) and can reportedly carry conventional and nuclear warheads.

Tests of the system were successfully carried out in 2007 and it is supplied by the Mashinostroyenia military-industrial corporation under a 2011 contract with the Russian Defense Ministry.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - January 18, 2015Iranian experts have successfully tested a new domestically-made fighter jet, called Borhan (Reasoning), in the country’s national wind tunnel facility, the Tasnim news agency reported on Saturday.

The fighter, which is also known as B92, has been manufactured by the Iranian military experts.

Currently, 70 percent of the detail design of the fighter, which is an updated and optimized version of Shafaq fighter, has been completed and its mock-up has been also manufactured.

Some changes have been made in the design of the aircraft to boost its capabilities, compared to Shafaq fighter, including its vertical tail as well as the airfoil of its wings.

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: China Has Not Attacked U.S. Aircraft Carrier
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by K. V. Seth from reliable sources By Jeff Schogol, Staff Writer ~ Navy Times
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - January 18, 2015The aircraft carrier George Washington has not been attacked, and World War III has not begun, despite what tweets from United Press International say, the Navy has confirmed.

The carrier is in port, not in the South China Sea, the Navy told Military Times on Friday.

UPI issued a statement on Friday saying its Twitter account and website had been hacked on Friday afternoon.

"It started on Twitter, where six fake headlines were posted in about 10 minutes, starting about 1:20 p.m. Some of them were about the Federal Reserve; others contained a false report that the USS George Washington had been attacked."

Editors learned of the hacking when they noticed a "breaking news" banner for a false story about the Federal Reserve, the statement said. UPI's technology team was able tor regain control of the Twitter account.

The tweets were deleted from UPI's Twitter feed about 2 p.m. on Friday.
