(NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE - December 15, 2012:  The first three MiG-29UPG fighter jets have been delivered to India under a contract to modernize the fleet of MiG-29 aircraft in service with the Indian Air Force (IAF), the MiG aircraft maker said.

“The MiG corporation…has started deliveries ofupgraded MiG-29UPG fighter jets to the Indian Air Force,” the company said in a statement on Monday.

“The first three aircraft have been transported to India on board an AN-124 heavy-lift transport plane,” the statement said.

The IAF has awarded the MiG corporation a $900 million contract to upgrade all of its 69 operational MiG-29s.

These upgrades include a new avionics kit, with the N-109 radar being replaced by a Phazatron Zhuk-M radar. The aircraft is also being equipped to enhance beyond-visual-range combat ability and for air-to-air refueling to increase flying time.

The service life of the modernized aircraft has been extended to 40 years.

The first six aircraft are upgraded in Russia while the remaining 63 will be refitted at the HAL facility in India.

In 2007, Russia gave India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) a license to manufacture 120 RD-33 series 3 turbojet engines for the upgrade.

“We are getting ready to carry out the work on the second part of the contract, which stipulates the modernization of the [MiG-29] aircraft in India in close cooperation with the Indian defense industry,” the MiG press service said.

(NSI News Source Info) MOSCOW, Russia - February 6, 2011: Russia's MiG corporation on Friday carried out the first test fight of a MiG-29 fighter modernized under a contract with the Indian Air Force (IAF).

"On February 4, 2010, a MiG-29UPG fighter carried out its first test flight. The flight lasted for an hour and was flawless," MiG said in a statement.

The IAF has awarded the MiG corporation a $900 million contract to upgrade all of its 69 operational MiG-29s.

(NSI News Source Info) MOSCOW, Russia - June 1, 2010: Russia may export 232 new multi-role fighters worth over $10 billion in 2010-2013, a Russian think tank reported on Monday. "A total of 821 fighter jets worth $53.3 billion will be sold on world markets in 2010-2013. The Russian share during this period will be 19% in revenues and 28.2% in quantity," Russian-based World Arms Markets Analysis Center said in a report. The think tank estimates the exports of 175 Su-family fighter jets worth $7.7 bln and 57 MiG-family aircraft worth $2.4 bln under existing contracts, licensed production contracts or deals that are close to be concluded. Russian arms sales were worth over $8.5 billion last year, including $7.4 billion via state arms exporter Rosobornexport, whose sales increased 10% y-o-y. Sales of combat aircraft constitute the bulk of exported weaponry. Russia expects to boost arms sales by 12% in 2010 and continue the growth trend in the future. Russia's main arms customers are India, Algeria, China, Venezuela, Malaysia and Syria. Vietnam also emerged as a key importer after it signed a deal to buy submarines, aircraft and other military hardware from Russia late last year. The company, once the flagship of Russia's fighter plane industry, was on the brink of bankruptcy in 2008 after orders declined due to quality problems. But according to Konstantin Makiyenko, deputy director of the Russian Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, MiG is now ready for lift-off after the Russian government injected 750 million euros (Dh348.9 million) into it over the last years and merged MiG with Ilyushin, Irkut, Sukhoi, Tupolev and Yakovlev to a new company named United Aircraft Corporation (Obyedinyonnaya Aviasroitelnaya Korporatsiya, OAK). Since then, MiG was able to cut its 1.3 billion euro debt pile by half and receive a couple of new orders. "There is strong lobbying going on within the Russian government," a Dubai-based Russian business man engaged in defence business told Gulf News on conditions of anonymity. "The fighter jet brand has a long history and there are people at very high decision levels that want MiG to stay alive. Some may call it nostalgic, I would say its bare-knuckle business." On orders of Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin himself MiG's debts at major Russian banks such as Alpha Bank and Sberbank have been restructured, and soon after MiG received an order worth 600 million euros from the Russian defence ministry. Other fresh orders came from Myanmar, Kazakhstan and India. Negotiations with Slovakia are ongoing. Overall, MiG's order books currently show a 5 billion euro backlog and the company is expected to produce about 100 jets a year, which comes close to the high-volume production in times of the Soviet Union, Makiyenko said in a current analysis. India in particular has turned out as a faithful customer of MiG jets. After a large order of MiG-29 fighters for the Indian Air Force, New Delhi now wants 20 more combat jets for its Navy. MiG was founded in 1939 and introduced its first jet in 1940, during the Second World War. Later, MiG jets were the best known Soviet combat planes during the Cold War. The MiG-15 was one of the first successful swept-wing jet fighters, and it achieved fame in the skies over Korea and Vietnam. The most popular model up to now is the MiG-29, developed in the 1970s to counter the US-built F-15 and F-16 combat jets.

Russia and India signed a contract on January 20, 2004, stipulating the supply of 12 single-seat MiG-29Ks and four two-seat MiG-29KUBs to India as part of a $1.5 billion deal to deliver the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier, currently being retrofitted in Russia for the Indian navy. Indian media earlier reported that two MiG-29K and two MiG-29KUB fighters arrived from Russia in a knocked down condition on December 4. Deliveries of the remaining aircraft will be carried out in line with a schedule agreed by MiG and the Indian Navy. (The first two MiG-29Ks and two MiG-29KUBs already tested on the carrier were officially transferred to India earlier.) The contract for the jets also stipulates the procurement of hardware for pilot training and aircraft maintenance, including flight simulators and interactive ground and sea-based training systems. India and Russia are also reportedly close to reaching an agreement to break the deadlock on additional financing for the retrofit of the Admiral Gorshkov, which caused "a distinct chill in expansive Indo-Russian defense ties." "India is likely to shell out around $2.5 billion and get the carrier by early 2013,'' Times of India quoted a source in the Indian military as saying. The Indian Navy has named its MiG-29K squadron the "Black Panthers." The fighters will be based at an airfield in the state of Goa on India's west coast until the Admiral Gorshkov joins the Navy under the name of INS Vikramaditya.

(NSI News Source Info) MOSCOW, Russia - August 13, 2009: Russia's leading combat aircraft manufacturers Sukhoi and MiG will exhibit their most advanced aircraft, the Su-35 Flanker and the MiG-35 Fulcrum-F multirole fighters at the MAKS-2009 air show in Russia. Over 711 companies, including 465 Russian firms, will participate in the biennial air show outside Moscow on August 18-23. The Sukhoi company said it will also showcase its Su-32 fighter-bomber (an export version of the Su-34 Fullback aircraft to be put in service with the Russian Air Force) and the Superjet 100 mid-haul passenger airliner. Overall, 1,449 exhibits will be on display, including 470 full-scale models. MAKS bills itself as "a demonstration of the advantages and development trends of Russian science and industry in such high-tech areas as aviation, space, missile engineering." Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport has said military aircraft will continue to dominate the company's foreign sales in 2009, and will total about $2.6 billion.
