 (NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 1, 2012:  Northrop Grumman Corp., Integrated Systems, Bethpage, N.Y., is being awarded a not-to-exceed $157,942,000 advance acquisition contract for long lead material and related support for the full rate production of five E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft (Lot 1).  

Work will be performed in Syracuse, N.Y. (32.6 percent); Bethpage, N.Y. (15.5 percent); Dallas, Texas (12.4 percent); Menlo Park, Calif. (9.8 percent); Woodland Hills, Calif. (6 percent); and various locations within the United States (23.7 percent).  

The work is expected to be completed in March 2013.  Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.  

This contract was not competitively procured pursuant to FAR 6.302-1.  The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Md., is the contracting activity (N00019-12-C-0063).

(NSI News Source Info) HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. - January 28, 2011: Orbit International Corp. (NASDAQ:ORBT - News), an electronics manufacturer and software solution provider, today announced that its Orbit Instrument Division received an order in excess of $600,000 for data entry panels for the mission control in the E-2 Hawkeye, the all weather carrier-capable Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft, designed to give long-range warning of incoming aerial threats. Deliveries under this contract are expected to commence in the second quarter of 2011 and continue through the fourth quarter of 2011.

From an operating altitude above 25,000 feet, the E-2 Hawkeye provides data on approaching air threats and provides threat identification and positional data to fighter aircraft. The Hawkeye’s secondary roles include strike command and control for all aircraft carrier battle groups, surveillance, guidance of search and rescue missions for naval aviators.

    DTN News: Lockheed Martin Awarded $171 Million For Advanced Hawkeye Airborne Early Warning Radars Source: DTN News / Lockheed Martin (NSI News Source Info) SYRACUSE, NY - March 6, 2010: Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] received a low-rate initial production contract valued at $171.8 million from Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems in Bethpage, NY, for four AN/APY-9 Airborne Early Warning (AEW) radar systems and spare parts. The radar systems will be integrated into the U.S. Navy’s new E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft. “The APY-9 radar will provide unprecedented capability to the U.S. Navy and allied forces operating in the littorals to detect and track airborne and cruise missile threats,” said Carl Bannar, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s Radar Systems business, headquartered in Syracuse, NY. “This radar represents a two-generation leap in AEW capability.” Designed and developed by Lockheed Martin, the AN/APY-9 radar features both a solid-state transmitter with higher power than its predecessor for extended range, as well as digital receivers to increase sensitivity. The UHF radar can “see” smaller targets -- and more of them -- at a greater range, particularly in coastal regions and over land. Its electronically scanned array provides critically important, continuous 360-degree coverage. As a new capability, flight operators also can now focus the radar on select areas of interest. Two engineering-development models and four pre-production radar systems are currently in flight and qualification testing. Over the last several months, the Navy/Industry integrated test team has flown more than 230 radar flights, performing multiple hours of over-water, near-land and over-land radar operations. Mission system and radar-related testing are currently ahead of schedule. “We are pleased with the radar’s detection performance,” said Dr. Doug Reep, Lockheed Martin’s program management director for AEW Radar. “Software updates are being released as scheduled and, with each release, the radar has demonstrated improved stability and performance during flight tests. We are confident we will meet the challenges of the Initial Operational Test and Evaluation scheduled to begin at the first quarter fiscal year 2012.” Lockheed Martin will produce AN/APY-9 radars to equip all 75 planned U.S. Navy E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft. Lockheed Martin has produced several generations of AEW radars for the aircraft over four decades. Lockheed Martin’s AN/APS-145 airborne radar is currently aboard in-service E-2C Hawkeyes and Hawkeye 2000 aircraft.     DTN News: Northrop Seeks Greenlight For E-2D Export *Source: DTN News / Defense News (NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE - February 20, 2010: Northrop Grumman hopes to get U.S. authorizations by the end of the year to market its Advanced Hawkeye E-2D airborne early warning and control aircraft to a short list of interested countries, said international program manager Tom Trudell, speaking at the Singapore Airshow. Northrop Grumman is hoping to get the okay from the U.S. government to export the Advanced Hawkeye E-2D airborne early warning and control aircraft. ( Northrop Grumman) "We're hoping by the end of the year," said. "We see opportunities in the marketplace. We're assessing those now." The company looks to find new export clients for the Hawkeye, which is operated by Egypt, France, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan. Only France and the U.S. Navy operate their E-2 planes from carriers, with the others working from shore-based facilities. The clearance process for exporting U.S. military technology is long and highly detailed, he said, and although the short list runs to single figures, Trudell said there is wide interest among foreign forces. The United Arab Emirates was one of the countries which has expressed interest. India asked for information on the Hawkeye 2000 around 2003. A third of the E-2 fleet flies under foreign flags, pointing up the importance of the international community of operators, Trudell said. The next international users conference is due to be held in April at St Augustine, Florida, where the aircraft is built. The program has met all major milestones so far. "The test program is on track," Trudell said. "This is unique for a program this sophisticated," he added. The two development aircraft are due to enter a six-month operational assessment in the autumn at the U.S. Navy test center at Patuxent River, Maryland. Clearing that hurdle allows production of the aircraft to continue. A next major "C" milestone is due in spring 2009. Under the 2003 contract worth $2.4 billion, Northrop Grumman signed up to develop and produce two development and three pilot production aircraft. The contract runs to 2012. The total buy is for 75 of the new aircraft for the U.S. Navy. An initial operating capability is scheduled in 2011, allowing the U.S. Navy to stand up a first squadron. Pilot production begins this year, followed by low rate initial production in 2009, and full production starts in 2013. To extend endurance of the new carrier-based E-2s to 12 hours, in-flight refueling tests have been done with C-130 and F-18 aircraft, although fuel transfers will only be made next year. For shore-based aircraft, extra fuel panels on the wings are planned, offering eight hours compared to the current six hours for the Hawkeye 2000, which is being phased out of production. For the new Hawkeye version, the airframe has been strengthened and a Lockheed Martin ADS-18 electronic scanned array radar replaces a mechanical rotating antenna, extending coverage. Other changes include more powerful Rolls-Royce T56-A-427A engines, six-bladed NP2000 Ratier-Figeac propellers, a glass cockpit and new mission systems computer. New communications and datalink gear and a fourth operator station have also been added.

India is among the very first countries for which the Advanced Hawkeye capability has been released. The MESA surveillance radar is an advanced airborne surveillance sensor and provides peninsular protection enabling sophisticated air-to-air and maritime coverage and integrated friend-or-foe identification. A computer demonstration of MESA capabilities and scale model of the array will be available for viewing. Also on display will be a model of Northrop Grumman's AN/APG-80 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar for the F-16IN Super Viper multi-role fighter aircraft. Northrop Grumman's airborne surveillance capability will also be highlighted with a model of Fire Scout, the Vertical Unmanned Aircraft System (VUAS) multi-role UAV on display. Fire Scout has recently deployed initially with the U.S. Navy. The company's latest generation of navigation and ship control technology will be highlighted. The Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine VisionMaster FT provides a highly integrated, fully networked suite of marine radar and electronic charting systems designed to form the backbone of the modern ship's integrated bridge. In addition to the standard suite, Northrop Grumman will feature its integrated platform management solution as part of the VisionMaster FT defence offering. Other programmes available for viewing will be models of directional infrared countermeasures (DIRCM); the LITENING advanced airborne targeting and navigation pod; the mine warfare mission system Airborne Laser Mine Detection System (ALMDS); and the Joint Multi-mission Expeditionary Craft (JMEC) that demonstrates the company's scalable network-centric warfare C4I system for high-speed boats capable of operating in locations from high-seas to the most challenging inland waterways. Northrop Grumman's capabilities in maritime security for military and civil applications will be featured with the Harbour and Coastal Security (HCS) system being highlighted.     (NSI News Source Info) BETHPAGE, N.Y.,- October 18, 2009: In preparation for its Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT&E), Northrop Grumman's (NYSE:NOC) first E-2D Advanced Hawkeye test aircraft, known as Delta One, has successfully completed its first land-based catapult launch tests - a required phase of testing prior to fleet introduction.
    Northrop Grumman's E-2D Advanced Hawkeye successfully completed its first land-based catapult launch tests at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. Both E-2D System Development and Demonstration aircraft are currently undergoing shore based carrier suitability testing in preparation for Initial Operational Test and Evaluation. Introduced in 2007, and built on the strong legacy of providing world-class airborne early warning and control capability for more than 45 years, the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye will provide the warfighter with the expanded battlespace and situational awareness required for today's and tomorrow's missions.
    Both E-2D System Development and Demonstration (SDD) aircraft, Delta One and Delta Two, are currently undergoing shore-based carrier suitability testing at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., conducted by the U.S. Navy's Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 20 (VX-20). "This latest milestone brings us that much closer to delivering this state-of-the-art airborne early warning capability to the U.S. Navy and demonstrates the tireless commitment and dedication of the joint Advanced Hawkeye team to successfully meeting, or exceeding, all program milestones." Prior to joining the carrier fleet, all naval aviation aircraft undergo carrier suitability testing. The bulk of this testing involves catapult and arrested landing structural tests, as well as the interoperability between the aircraft and the carrier. In the cockpit for the first E-2D Advanced Hawkeye catapult test were Northrop Grumman Flight Test Pilot Les Ryan, and Dan Carrigg, Wyle flight test pilot. "There is nothing more exhilarating than being 'shot' off the deck of a carrier at more than 100 miles per hour," said Ryan. "This phase of testing is critical to ensure that the aircraft can structurally handle the rigors of carrier operations. We completed multiple launches and, during each one, Delta One performed as expected -- with no noted anomalies." Introduced in 2007, and built on the E-2's strong legacy of providing world-class airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) capability for more than 45 years, the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is the sixth generation of the E-2. While its external appearance is similar to the E-2C, the internal systems of the Advanced Hawkeye have been completely redesigned and the capabilities vastly expanded. With its newly developed, more powerful AN/APY-9 Electronic Scan Array (ESA) radar, the E-2D will provide the warfighter with the expanded battlespace and situational awareness required for today's and tomorrow's missions. Under a $408 million contract awarded in July 2007, Northrop Grumman is producing three E-2D pilot production aircraft which are on-track for delivery to the U.S. Navy in 2010. Following the successful completion of a Milestone C review, a $432 million contract, awarded in June, kicked off Low-Rate Initial Production. The Navy's Program of Record is for 75 total E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft. Northrop Grumman's Second E-2D Advanced Hawkeye Enters Next Phase of Testing Shown during earlier flight testing over the skies of St. Augustine, Fla., Northrop Grumman's two developmental E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft, Delta One and Delta Two, have transitioned to NAS Patuxent River, in Maryland, to continue flight testing in preparation for Initial Operational Test and Evaluation. Airborne for the first time in August 2007, the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, with its new AN/APY-9 radar, will provide battle commanders with unparalleled maritime domain awareness including airspace control for manned and unmanned assets, monitoring of surface movements, civil support, and command and control of tactical forces. The first E-2D System Development and Design (SDD) aircraft, Delta One, transitioned to Pax River on May 30 and testing began shortly thereafter, led by the U.S. Navy's Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 20. "The joint Advanced Hawkeye team has been putting the two SDD aircraft through a rigorous flight test program at Northrop Grumman's Manufacturing and Flight Test Center in St. Augustine, Fla.," said Jim Culmo, vice president of Airborne Early Warning and Battle Management Command and Control programs for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. "This next phase of testing -- carrier suitability -- will be the first opportunity to get the E-2D out on the carrier. We're looking forward to the first Advanced Hawkeye carrier landing as it brings us that much closer to delivering this revolutionary weapons system to the warfighter." To ensure that aircraft operating on carriers are compatible, all naval aviation assets undergo carrier suitability testing prior to joining the fleet.     (NSI News Source Info) PARIS, France - June 17, 2009: The Northrop Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeye program has signed a $432 million contract with the U.S. Navy to produce four Low Rate Initial Production aircraft, the firm said June 16 at the Paris Air Show. The latest version of the E-2, the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, is currently under development and the first two aircraft, "Delta One" and "Delta Two" are in flight testing. The E-2D features an entirely new avionics suite, including the new APY-9 radar, radio suite, mission computer, integrated satellite communications capability, flight management system, improved engines, a new "glass" cockpit and the ability to refuel in-flight. The APY-9 features an Active Electronically Scanned Array (electronically steered) radar in its rotodome. The E-2D will include provisions for either pilot to act as a Tactical 4th Operator, and have access to the full range of mission functions available to the CIC crew. The E-2D's first flight occurred on 3 August 2007. The E-2D will undergo Initial Operational Test and Evaluation in 2011. On May 8, 2009, an E-2D Advanced Hawkeye used Cooperative Engagement Capability to engage an overland cruise missile with a Standard Missile 6 in an integrated fire control test. The contract follows the signing in 2003 of a development and design contract for the aircraft, an update of the E-2C that will fly with the AN/APY-9 electronically scanned radar built by Lockheed Martin. Northrop Grumman said the aircraft had passed an Operational Assessment test phase and flown 1,000 flight test hours. The decision to launch LRIP production coincided with the review and recertification of the program under the Nunn-McCurdy certification process, following a leap in costs on the program. In a statement, the U.S. Navy said that the review showed "the critical breach could be mitigated by programming the procurement of E-2D aircraft at a more efficient rate." The Navy will procure two aircraft each in fiscal year 2009 and 2010, the Navy added, with a total of 75 acquisitions planned. The program is on track for Initial Operational Test and Evaluation in 2011, it added.

To ensure that the aircraft operating on carriers are compatible, all naval aviation assets undergo carrier suitability testing prior to joining the fleet. During this test phase all aspects of aviation/ship integration are addressed, including logistics, manpower and interoperability.
