As a first response to demonstrate our commitment to the defense of our Allies, the U.S. augmented its participation in Baltic Air Policing by sending an additional six F-15s to the NATO mission. Under operation ATLANTIC RESOLVE, U.S. Army Europe forces have deployed to Latvia, along with other Allies in the region, to conduct land forces training.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - September 17, 2014: In light of the Russian military intervention in Ukraine, the United States is demonstrating its continued commitment to collective security through a series of actions designed to reassure NATO Allies and partners of America's dedication to enduring peace and stability in the region.
As a first response to demonstrate our commitment to the defense of our Allies, the U.S. augmented its participation in Baltic Air Policing by sending an additional six F-15s to the NATO mission. Under operation ATLANTIC RESOLVE, U.S. Army Europe forces have deployed to Latvia, along with other Allies in the region, to conduct land forces training.
U.S. and Latvian troops participate in a range of other joint and multilateral exercises, including SABER STRIKE, BALTOPS, and STEADFAST JAZZ. Latvian soldiers and defense personnel also receive technical training and strategic education in the United States.
As NATO allies, the United States and Latvia are committed to each other’s defense and partner in critical areas around the world. Latvia contributes important capabilities to the Alliance’s collective security, including the training of U.S.-certified joint terminal attack controllers (JTAC) who coordinate air support for ground units during operations.
The government of Latvia has recognized the danger of increased cyber threats and is working together with NATO, the European Union, the Baltic states, Nordic states, and the United States to strengthen its cybersecurity. The United States supports Latvia’s efforts through visits by U.S. experts and Latvian participation in EUCOM- and NATO-sponsored events and U.S.-based training. The government of Latvia is also a partner in the Freedom Online Coalition, a group of governments collaborating to advance Internet freedom.

The helicopter crews are assigned to the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, and the Italian paratroopers are assigned to the Italian Folgore Parachute Brigade.
The exercise, which involves more than 2,000 troops from nine nations, takes place across Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - September 28, 2013: India is set to buy American defence equipment worth five billion US dollars and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who left for the United States today, is carrying a long shopping list.
Among the hardware that India is looking to purchase are six additional C-130 J Hercules Medium Lift Aircraft, 22 Apache Attack Helicopters, 15 Chinook Heavy Lift Helicopters and about 140 M-777 ultra-light towed Howitzers. Contracts for all of these are expected to be signed before the current financial year is over.
The US-made Apache Attack helicopters will replace India's ageing fleet of Russian-made M-35 helicopters and will cost India about $1.4 billion.
Although the US lost the $15 billion tender for the supply of Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft or MMRC to France in 2011, it has in the last decade sold weapons systems worth $8 billion to India and is poised to edge out Russia and Israel as New Delhi's biggest defence equipment suppliers.
The US has recently proposed co-producing aircraft like the C-130 J Hercules and the number of joint military exercises that India has carried out with the US in the last 10 years too now exceeds those with traditional defence partners like Russia, UK and France.
It was perhaps this apparent closeness that provoked Victor Komaradin, who headed a Russian delegation at Aero-India 2013, to observe that "although Russia has virtually created Indian Defence industries in the 1960's and 70's, little attention is being given to the Russian contribution in building India's defence capabilities."
The big purchase order also underscores the fact that despite claiming to be a regional power, India still imports about 70 per cent of all its weapons and equipment.
According to a March 2013 report of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute - an independent research body that specialises in conflict and arms sales - New Delhi replaced Beijing as the world's top arms importer accounting for 12 per cent of global arms transfers between 2008 and 2012. China accounted for about six per cent.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 26, 2012: The Boeing Co., Ridley Park, Pa., was awarded a $9,611,350 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract. The award will provide for the addition of a rotor brake system on the Australian Defense Force CH-47 aircraft.
Work will be performed in Ridley Park, Pa., with an estimated completion date of April 30, 2015. One bid was solicited, with one bid received.
The U.S. Army Contracting Command, Redstone Arsenal, Ala., is the contracting activity (W58RGZ-04-G-0023).
The Australian Defence Force’s CH-47 “Chinook” helicopters have returned to duty in Southern Afghanistan, providing medium lift transport capability to Australian and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) units.
The helicopters will be operated by the men and women of Rotary Wing Group 7 (RWG 7) who recently commenced their deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation SLIPPER.
Commander of Australia’s Joint Task Force 633 in the Middle East, Major General Stuart Smith said the helicopters were a major addition to ISAF rotary wing capability in southern Afghanistan.
“The troops of Rotary Wing Group 7 are experienced and their CH-47s are historically important helicopters for supporting coalition forces – moving thousands of passengers and hundreds of thousands of kilograms of freight during their annual rotation,” Major General Smith said.
Embedded with the United States 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, known as Task Force Wings, RWG 7 will provide medium lift helicopter support to ISAF missions throughout Uruzgan, Daykundi, Kandahar and Zabul Provinces.
Commanding Officer of RWG 7, Lieutenant Colonel Scott Nicholls said the team was excited to be back on operations in support of Australian and ISAF troops.
“Rotary Wing Group 7 had an extensive preparation before deploying to Afghanistan, not only flying but also conducting simulation activities,” Lieutenant Colonel Nicholls said.
“Since being in Afghanistan, we’ve actually conducted significant training, local area familiarisation by day and night and integrating with our US Task Force,” he added.
Traditionally, the two CH-47D helicopters are dismantled and transported back to Australian for deep level maintenance over the Afghan winter period. This past winter, the helicopters remained in Kandahar for scheduled deep level maintenance.
This resulted in savings by not breaking the aircraft down for transport to Australia and as well as saving fuel and flying hours for Royal Australian Air Force C-17 aircraft.
The in-theatre maintenance was supervised by an experienced team of Army technical personnel to ensure it met stringent Australian technical airworthiness requirements.
RWG 7 is made up of approximately 60 personnel primarily from the Townsville-based 5th Aviation Regiment and from across the ADF.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 3, 2012: Minister for Defence Stephen Smith announced on Wednesday ~ February 1, 2012 that the Australian Defence Force (ADF) fleet of Chinooks has increased to seven following the arrival of two additional CH-47D Chinook helicopters in Townsville.
In November last year, the Government approved the purchase of the two ex-United States Army Chinooks following the loss of one ADF Chinook on operations in Afghanistan in May 2011.
The Minister said the new Chinooks would enter a period of deep maintenance and modification to bring them up to the same configuration as the existing ADF Chinook fleet.
Both Chinooks are scheduled to be delivered to the Australian Army to support operations by the middle of 2012.
The CH-47D Chinook is a highly capable medium-lift utility helicopter. Its roles include troop movement, battlefield equipment transport, search and rescue and disaster relief.
Chinooks have been highly capable workhorses since they entered ADF service in 1995 in operations both in Australia and overseas.
Chinooks have been deployed on Operation Slipper in Afghanistan since 2006.
They have performed an outstanding service for both ADF and International Security Assistance Forces and are in high demand across Afghanistan due to their superior performance in hot and high altitude conditions.
The ADF CH-47D fleet will be replaced with seven new CH-47F Chinooks from around 2016.
