Qatar Airways is the first customer in the world to take advantage of the new modification offering, a reflection of its focus on providing a superior product to its customers.

Through design improvements, Boeing's retrofittable Performance Improvement Package allows airlines to open new routes, fly existing routes more efficiently and improve payload capacity and range. Qatar Airways, as the launch customer for the offering, will be upgrading its entire fleet of 53 777s.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - July 9, 2012: Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Air Lease Corporation (NYSE: AL) announced today a firm order for 60 737 MAX 8 and 15 737 MAX 9 airplanes, with reconfirmation rights for 25 additional 737 MAXs. The order, with a list-price value of $7.2 billion, represents the first 737 MAX order by a leasing company.

"The 737 MAX is an excellent addition to our portfolio and the ideal complement to our growing fleet of Next-Generation 737-800s," said Steven Udvar-Hazy, chairman and CEO of Air Lease Corporation. "The 737 MAX represents a step-change improvement that our airline clients need to compete in the future."

The 737 MAX is a new-engine variant of the world's best selling airplane and builds on the strengths of today's Next-Generation 737. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest-technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market.

Airlines operating the 737 MAX will see a 13 percent fuel burn improvement over today's most fuel efficient single-aisle airplanes and an eight percent operating cost per seat advantage over tomorrow's competition.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom, July 9, 2012: A Korean Air Next-Generation 737-900ER (Extended Range), featuring Boeing's innovative Sky Interior, was the second Boeing [NYSE: BA] airplane to arrive at this year's Farnborough International Airshow.

 "Boeing takes great pride in knowing Korean Air is using the Sky Interior to deliver a more comfortable travel experience for its customers."

"The 737 Boeing Sky Interior is helping airlines like Korean Air to differentiate themselves from their competitors," Wyse said. 
"Passengers instantly see and feel the difference." Those differences include sculpted sidewalls and window reveals, LED lighting, larger stow bins and more intuitive placement of attendant call and light buttons.

Korean Air currently operates four 737-900ERs as well as a combination of 34 737-800s and -900s in its single-aisle fleet. The airline's fleet consists of 87 Boeing commercial jetliners. Korean Air took delivery of this airplane in May 2012.

The 737-900ER, which was called the 737-900X prior to launch, is the newest addition and the largest variant of the Boeing 737 line and was introduced to meet the range and passenger capacity of the discontinued 757-200 and to directly compete with the Airbus A321.

An additional pair of exit doors and a flat rear pressure bulkhead increase seating capacity to 180 passengers in a 2-class configuration or 215 passengers in a single-class layout. Additional fuel capacity and standard winglets improve range to that of other 737NG variants.

The first 737-900ER was rolled out of the Renton, Washington factory on August 8, 2006 for its launch customer, Lion Air. Lion Air received this aircraft on April 27, 2007 in a special dual paint scheme combining the Lion Air lion on the vertical stabilizer and the Boeing livery colors on the fuselage. Lion Air has orders for 166 737-900ERs as of August 2011.

On August 22, 2011, it was reported that Delta Air Lines had placed an order for 100 737-900ERs, the largest single order for the type.

A total of 52 -900s, 82 -900ERs, and 6 -900 BBJs have been delivered with 183 unfilled orders as of January 2011.

(NSI News Source Info) JERUSALEM, Israel - August 8, 2010: This week's military clash along the Israeli-Lebanese border has raised concerns in Israel about U.S. military assistance to Lebanon. In 2009 the United States approved $100 million in assistance to the Lebanese military and the Obama administration has requested a similar amount for 2011, in addition to small increases for anti-narcotics, anti-terror and military training programs. Since 1976 Israel had been the largest annual recipient of U.S. foreign assistance, with Congressional Research Service in a November 2001 report, "Israel: U.S. Foreign Assistance," placing U.S. aid to Israel over the last five decades at $81.3 billion. Israel remains the top recipient of U.S. military and economic assistance, with annual assistance now running approximately $3 billion annually, of which about $1.8 billion a year consists of Department of Defense Foreign Military Financing grants, with State Department Economic Support Funds accounting for the remaining $1.2 billion. Israel is concerned that the recent border incident involved Lebanese Armed Forces personnel, as the Israel Defense Force's Northern Command assumes that border incidents would involve Hezbollah rather than LAF soldiers. Besides the border incident, regional tensions are rising as a U.N. tribunal is expected shortly to issue indictments in the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, with Beirut-based Hezbollah leader Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah remarking that the tribunal will wrongfully implicate several Hezbollah members in Hariri's assassination. While Israel views with growing alarm what it sees as the increasing radicalization of the LAF and increasing anti-Israeli rhetoric, it is also noting with concern recent Lebanese arms purchases from the United States and Russia. These include combat air-support aircraft fitted with Hellfire anti-armor missiles as well as Raven miniature unmanned aerial vehicles, while reports indicate that Russia is selling Lebanon several attack helicopters. During last month's Farnborough 2010 air show, Rosoboronexport delegation head Sergei Kornev, who is also the head of the Rosoboronexport department for exporting air force special equipment and services, said, "We received a request from the Lebanese side on obtaining helicopters and could not fail to respond to it. The possibility is currently being considered to deliver Mi-24, Mi-17 and Ka-32 helicopters. As soon as we agree with our partners what type of helicopters they need, it will be possible to conclude a contract and report the timeframe for its implementation." Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior IDF official said, "If the LAF is becoming more radical and aligning itself with Hezbollah, the U.S. would do well to reevaluate the continued military support it is providing Lebanon." The Israeli and Lebanese armed forces are currently separated along the Israeli-Lebanese border by approximately 12,000 U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon peacekeepers, where UNIFIL forces have been deployed since 1978.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - August 8, 2010: In the same week that the Chengdu JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft made its international debut at the Farnborough airshow, the product of this co-development between China and Pakistan was offered to Indonesia.

The Pakistan Defence Minister signed a defense cooperation agreement with his Indonesian counterpart in Jakarta.

The list of countries that the Sino-Pakistan joint venture is targeting for sales is expanding fast: it reportedly also includes Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Congo, Egypt, Iran, Nigeria, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Turkey, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. At Farnborough, joint-venture partners Catic and PAC described the JF-17 as a multi-role light fighter with an “outstanding performance-to-cost ratio.” The two aircraft on display were ferried to Farnborough but did not fly during the show, and officials were reluctant to allow journalists into the cockpit to view the three multifunction displays plus head-up display, HOTAS (hands on throttle and stick) and other avionics.

The aircraft were shown with PL-5II IR-guided air-to-air missiles on wingtip rails and ferry tanks on the centerline and inner wing stations, leaving the outer wing stations unloaded. Mockups of five Chinese stores were displayed next to the aircraft: a C802A anti-ship missile; an SD-10A active radar-guided air-to-air missile; an LS-6 glide bomb; a WMD-7 targeting pod; and a KG300G electronic warfare pod. Program officials said that a development JF-17 is now flying in China with a Chinese-developed engine, presumably the WS-13 Taishan.

All other JF-17s are powered by the Russian-supplied RD-93 turbofan. On the eve of Farnborough, a Russian newspaper reported the opposition of Sukhoi and MiG director-general Mikhail Pogosian to a further sale of RD-93s to China because the JF-17 is competing with the MiG-29 for export sales.

At the show, however, Russian officials, including Pogosian, played down this concern.

(NSI News Source Info) FARNBOROUGH, England - July 26, 2010: The versions of the F-16 being delivered to customers now - and which is in contention for an Indian order for 126 jets - are the most advanced 4th generation multi-role fighter aircraft currently available on the international market, its manufacturer Lockheed Martin said Wednesday.

"The F-16 continues as a modern, highly capable, affordable and supportable fighter. The programme is healthy and active, with firm production through 2013 and a strong likelihood of new orders that will extend the line for several more years," Bill McHenry, director of business development for F-16 programmes, told reporters at the Farnborough International Airshow.

Aircraft now being produced for Turkey, Pakistan, Morocco and Egypt are the advanced Block 50/52 F-16 C/D configuration. The United Arab Emirates was the launch customer for the Block 60 F-16 E/F version, which is the platform for the proposed variant called the F-16IN Super Viper for the Indian Air Force’s medium multi-role combat aircraft competition. A decision on this is likely later this year.

McHenry also added that there is a backlog of 86 F-16s, including a recent order from Egypt for 20 advanced Block 50/52 aircraft, the sixth follow-on buy for this country.

More than 4,450 F-16s have been delivered worldwide since the programme’s inception more than 30 years ago - including 53 follow-on buys by 14 countries.

In addition to the F-16 production programmes, Lockheed Martin continues to develop the F-16 for the future by integrating advanced technologies through upgrade programmes for existing F-16s to ensure interoperability with the world’s only 5th generation fighters - the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.

"This integration of advanced technologies for fielded and new aircraft provides an opportunity for F-16 operators to benefit from the latest developments in technology and capabilities for fighter aircraft," McHenry said.

"This synergy will parallel technology and provide a natural bridge from the 4th generation of fighters to the 5th generation," he added.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 136,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. (NSI News Source Info) FARNBOROUGH, England- July 25, 2010: Embarked on a spree of defence and commercial aviation deals, India was clearly in the limelight at the Farnborough International Air Show 2010 and the coming months may see increased efforts by foreign firms to woo the country.

Summing up the air show, Mike Alvis, executive vice president of the American defence technology supplier ITT Defense International said at a press conference: "We're seeing unbelievable demand from India. There's a lot of willingness to spend on defence." Western firms are seeing India as the biggest spender among emerging economies.

The impression is backed by ongoing deals which were talked about at the air show like the C-17 military transport planes and Dreamline 787 passenger craft from Boeing, the Hawk fighter jets from British defence group BAE Systems and military equipment from ITT Corp.

These firms are also keenly awaiting India's choice of supplier for its Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) deal for the supply of 126 aircraft to augment the Indian Air Force.

Of the six firms short-listed, five are from the US and Europe, the sixth being a Russian firm. Defence deals are on top of the agenda as British Prime Minister David Cameron visits India next week, more so because of Britain slashing defence spending and looking for increased exports.

British Trade and Industry spokesman Adam Thomas said at the air show: "We see huge opportunities from emerging markets. We have a global market share of close to 20 percent and we have been bringing delegates from as many countries as possible to Farnborough."

Cameron will have in mind the fact that one of the competitors for the MMRCA deal is the Eurotyphoon fighter, manufactured by EADS, a consortium of which BAE is a partner.

But the immediate British deal relates to the Hawk jets. BAE Systems hopes to sign a deal to supply more Hawk trainer jets to India, building on an established partnership with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL).

BAE is also interested in selling the Type-26 Frigate.

BAE's group business development director Alan Garwood said his company "is close to sealing" the Hawk deal. The Americans too seemed enthusiastic about growing defence ties with India at the air show.

An American arms supplier, Vice Admiral Jeffrey Wieringa, who was at the air show, commented on Indo-US ties: "The relationship is at the best and highest level it's been." Christopher Chadwick, president of Boeing military aircraft - which too has a stake in India's MMRCA deal - said India was interested in buying more than the 10 C-17 planes already planned.

The C-17 Globemaster deal at approximately 3.8 billion pounds is the largest Indo-US deal ever, overtaking the 1.4 billion-pound contract for eight Boeing P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft inked last year.

Russia, whose Ilyushin Il-76 transporters the C-17s will eventually replace, sought to downplay the impression that its deals with India were drying up.

At a briefing at the Russian stall, Alexander Mikheiev, deputy director of the Russian agency Rosoboronexport announced details of the deal involving the fifth generation Russian fighter, T-50.

"I can confirm that an addendum to the agreement on developing an engine for fifth generation fighter will be signed before the end of the year," he said.

The Russians indicated the special efforts being taken to retain India's partnership by diversifying to commercial aviation. Igor Pshenichny, first deputy executive director for marketing and sales at Russian Helicopters -- which is selling four commercial machines to an Indian company -- said: "As to the commercial market for us it's a practically new market."

"We have several commercial helicopter operators there, but it's not a big quantity for such a big and huge economically developing country as India. So we are putting additional emphasis on this market now," he added.

(NSI News Source Info) FARNBOROUGH, England- July 24, 2010: Thales has announced that together with the Tiger helicopter gunship, its TopOwl helmet-mounted sight and display system (HMSD) has been deployed with the French forces in Afghanistan to provide high levels of night vision performance and targeting capabilities for pilots. “The combat-proven Thales TopOwl HMSD has been involved in bringing major operational benefits to helicopter crews,” a Thales statement issued during the ongoing Farnborough Air Show said. “TopOwl is the only helmet-mounted sight and display system offering both conformal piloting symbology, dark night vision performance and accurate targeting together with an unmatched level of comfort and fatigue reduction - key for war missions and the high levels of stress involved,” the statement added. TopOwl night vision performance has recently been upgraded to reach “level 5”, which corresponds to levels of visibility equivalent to a cloudy night with no moon, no peripheral light source and no starlight. “With its exclusive architecture featuring the projection of intensified images directly onto the helmet visor, TopOwl offers a seamless transition between head-up piloting and head-down instrument monitoring, together with a well-balanced centre of gravity, eliminating the pilot fatigue generated by standard night vision goggles,” the statement said. Yves Joannic, Thales vice president for Helicopter Avionics said: “Thales is constantly working towards improving its products and systems. We integrate essential pilot feedback and build on existing technologies to provide greater levels of performance that will better support our troops in theatre.” Thales and New Delhi-based Samtel group are also in a joint venture to design, manufacture and sell avionics systems in the Indian market. Samtel and Thales hold 74:26 in the venture that was started with a capital of $12.5 million with more investments to be pumped in as the joint development efforts progress.

Farnborough International Limited (FIL) today (Friday) announced the orders and attendee figures to date

for the Farnborough International Airshow, held in Hampshire, UK between 19 and 25 July 2010.

The 2010 show was sold out with an increased number of exhibiting companies (1450) compared to the

2008 show (1393). This year’s event saw good engagement from decision-makers with 11 UK

Government ministers, as well as ministers from overseas plus 70 delegations from 44 countries, in

attendance. With over 120,000 visitors on trade days and an expected 160,000 on the forthcoming public

weekend this will put 2010 almost on a par with the total numbers for 2008, which were 285,000.

Orders for the show so far total $47 billion (~£31 billion) and the Airshow has welcomed 120,461 people.

As expected given the current economic climate visitor numbers on trade days are down around 8 per

cent on 2008. The show also contributes about £20 million to the local economy around Farnborough.

The peak boom year was 2008 when the show saw $88.7 billion of orders. For comparison 2006 saw

$46 billion worth of orders taken.

Rolls-Royce said on Friday it won orders totaling more than $1 billion for Trent 700s to power 17 Airbus A330s from Russia's Aeroflot and Garuda Indonesia Airlines. Rolls-Royce also signed new service agreements with Sichuan Airlines, and extended service deals with Garuda and Air Transat at the show in south-east England. International Aero Engines, in which Rolls-Royce is a partner, received orders for V2500 engines from Yemenia, China Southern and Vietnam Airlines, with a value to Rolls-Royce of about $470 million, and its defense business won a $70 million contract to support the Canadian Air Force CC-130J fleet. (NSI News Source Info) FARNBOROUGH, England - July 23, 2010: Makers of unmanned military planes said cuts in defense spending and Western troop withdrawal from Afghanistan would not hit demand, and they stood to benefit from fewer boots being on the ground in the future. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, or drones, are used extensively in Afghanistan. Some companies exhibiting their UAVs at the Farnborough Airshow this week said they are likely to benefit from a general drive to let robots do dangerous or boring work, taking soldiers out of harm's way. "(Cuts) will always have an effect ... but intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance tends to be the first thing deployed before a battle begins and the last thing before it ends," Ed Walby, Northrop Grumman's business development direct for the Global Hawk, told Reuters. "In theory, something like a Global Hawk should do well in a budget tightening," he said on the sidelines of the airshow. The Global Hawk has been used by the Pentagon in Afghanistan since 2001 when U.S. and Afghan forces ousted the Taliban in a military operation following the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States. Unlike General Atomics' Predator, which is used extensively in both Afghanistan and Pakistan, the high-altitude Global Hawk is unarmed and is primarily used to collect satellite and infrared images of land. The Global Hawk also costs significantly more than the Predator, with a price tag of at least $30 million, something which Walby defended on grounds that it lasts for many years, making it less disposable than a Predator. Both Washington and London have said they want their troops out of Afghanistan within the next five years and U.S. President Barack Obama sees his troop withdrawal timetable starting as early as next year. The scale-down by NATO's top two contributors in the conflict does not faze France's Thales (TCFP.PA) either, which is the only company making drones for Britain's Defence Ministry (MOD). Thales has developed the Watchkeeper drone for the MOD and expects it to be used in Afghanistan from next year. At least six of its Hermes 450 UAVs are leased to the MOD in Afghanistan. "The MOD still has a big pot of money it has to spend," Thales spokeswoman Kathryn Bell said. "As soon as Watchkeeper goes into theatre we'd expect to see interest turn into much stronger interest." Walby also emphasised Global Hawk's use in environmental disasters where it has been used to survey the forest fires which devastated parts of California in 2008 and the Haiti Earthquake in February. General Atomics has reached out to markets beyond the U.S. and Western Europe, tapping strong demand in the Middle East and North Africa for an unarmed version of the Predator. It has also applied for a license to sell to Pakistan. General Atomics' head of business development, Christopher Ames, told Reuters earlier this week that the Predator's relatively low cost of $4 million to $15 million an aircraft, sparked growing demand from U.S. homeland security officials, Britain, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Spain. (NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - July 23, 2010: The Eurofighter Typhoon is unique in modern combat aircraft in that there are four separate assembly lines. Each partner company assembles its own national aircraft, but builds the same parts for all 683 aircraft (including exports). A fifth assembly line will be established for the final 48 Saudi aircraft.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine canard-delta wing multirole aircraft designed and built by a consortium of three companies: Alenia Aeronautica, BAE Systems, and EADS working through a holding company Eurofighter GmbH, which was formed in 1986. The project is managed by NETMA (NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency) which acts as the prime customer. The series production of the Eurofighter Typhoon is underway, and the aircraft is being procured under three separate contracts (named "tranches"), each for aircraft with generally improved capabilities. The aircraft has entered service with the British Royal Air Force, the German Luftwaffe, the Italian Air Force, the Spanish Air Force and the Austrian Air Force. Saudi Arabia has signed a contract worth £4.43 billion (approx. €6.4 billion c. 2007, $9.5 billion) for 72 aircraft.

Typhoon fighter jet test pilot Craig Penrice no longer flies. Seven years ago he ejected from a jet with engine failure and ended up with a broken back and a new career. These days Mr Penrice is a member of Eurofighter's business development team, pitching the Typhoon to air crews, air forces and defence ministries around the world. "I want the boys who do the jobs I used to do to have the best equipment available," he says. When the Typhoon was introduced in the mid 90s, Mr Penrice was the first Royal Air Force pilot to fly it. The aircraft was built to meet criteria hammered out by four European defence ministries - those in the UK, Spain, Germany and Italy. It is now in series production, being built by a consortium of European military manufacturers, including BAE Systems in the UK, the Finmeccanica subsidiary Alenia Aeronautica in Italy and the European aerospace and defence giant EADS. "Eurofighter is a plane that's really found its time," BAE Systems' group business development director Alan Garwood tells the BBC. "It's a multi-role combat aircraft that delivers for the Royal Air Force, for the Saudis and the other European nations that have bought it so far a really tremendous fourth generation capability that will survive for years." Eurofighter's Craig Penrice says jets should be judged on performance, not politics.

Fast and nimble At Farnborough, BAE Systems test pilot Nat Makepeace looks relaxed as he gets ready for the mission of the day. Mr Makepeace is preparing to fly a Eurofighter Typhoon, complete with six air-to-air missiles, four laser-guided bombs and three fuel tanks, in the air show aerial display. "Fingers off buttons," he quips, though the biggest challenge will be the weight added to the fully loaded aircraft as he sets out to showcase the jet's manoeuvrability. A trial in a flight simulator in the Eurofighter challet gives a taster of what he will have to contend with, and what the jet can do. The Typhoon is a hugely capable fighter jet, according to Mr Penrice. "In performance terms, it is very similar to an F-22," he insists, pointing to how both aircraft are very nimble and can fly at great heights and at high speed.

Ideal combinations In a world without political considerations, Eurofighter's Typhoon and Lockheed Martin's F-22 Raptor might have been rival multijet combat jets, according to Mr Penrice. In the real world, however, they are not. The Pentagon does not to permit Lockheed Martin to sell the much admired jet outside the US. Instead, the Raptor programme was halted last year, effective from 2011, leaving the US Air Force with 187 F-22 Raptor jets. The F-22 is to be used alongside the F-35 Lightning II, or Joint Strike Fighter, a jet currently in development. A similar and equally suitable jet combination for European nations could be the Typhoon and the F-35, Mr Penrice says. Both combinations would benefit from the F-35's capabilities, which includes using it for bombing raids, with the speed and agility of either the Raptor or the Typhoon, he reasons. About 100,000 European jobs are supported by the Eurofighter programme Instead, in the world of defence budgets the F-35 has emerged as a rival to the Typhoon. This was highlighted by a decision by Italy this week to cancel a 2bn euros order for its final 25 Typhoons - about a fifth of its original order - while at the same time saying it will go ahead and buy F-35 aircraft. With defence budget cuts looming in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, many at Farnborough predict that other customers will follow suit. The F-35 is often described as a fifth generation aircraft, and as such it could be deemed superior to the Typhoon. But Mr Penrice disputes this, insisting they are both good planes, but they are built for different purposes.

Performance, price, politics The F-35 cannot supercruise, it is not extremely agile, and its so-called stealth, or technology that makes it harder to detect, is limited, he claims. Indeed, Mr Penrice even challenges the notion of fifth generation jets, insisting it is a term that seems to be mainly used for marketing purposes. As such, he reasons, it creates "mis-understandings and spreads mis-information". The way Mr Penrice sees it, three factors are considered when a fighter jet is chosen: performance, price and politics. And these days, he insists, it is politics that rules. For starters, when governments choose to pour money into a jet programme, they want industrial expertise and they want manufacturing jobs in return. With the Typhoon, they have got that in spades, he insists, pointing out that some 100,000 European jobs are supported by the Eurofighter programme. Many of those are the sort of jobs that maintain skills that enable Europe to remain autonomous rather than relying on the US, he reasons.

Key criteria In the skies above Farnborough, Mr Makepeace wows the crowds with his aerial acrobatics. But defence ministry and industry officials are also treated to a display by United States Air Force F-22 Raptor Aerial Demonstration Team Commander Major Dave 'Zeke' Skalicky, giving them first-hand views of the two planes' performance. As a pilot, Mr Penrice would have liked performance to be the key criteria for countries choosing which fighter jets to buy. But he also realises that defence budgets are cut both in Europe and the US, price and politics may play ever greater roles going forward. And with many countries being "unwilling to move away from American products" for political reasons, he fears some pilots will be flying the wrong jets for their missions.
