(NSI News Source Info) HYDERABAD, India - August 17, 2009: Chinese ace Lin Dan is poised to become the first player in World Badminton Championship history to win three successive men's singles titles. China's Lin Dan returns a shot against compatriot Chen Jin during their final men's singles match in the World Badminton Championships in Hyderabad August 16, 2009. Defending champion and Olympic gold medalist Lin, winner of the World Championship in 2006 and 2007, has held an edge over his Malaysian archrival Lee Chong Wei in major events and will hope to extend that in the event beginning Monday in Hyderabad. His aggressive style, which earned Lin the nickname of 'Super Dan', was the feature of his triumphs over No.1-ranked Lee in the finals at last year's Beijing Olympics and at the All-England Open in Birmingham. Lin will carry that confidence into the upcoming tournament, while Lee will be burdened by the unhappy memory of his last sojourn to this southern Indian city, where he made a first-round exit from the Indian Open five months ago, after a bout of food poisoning. Lin and his top-seeded archrival Lee are both drawn in the top-half of the championship along with seasoned Danish star and former silver medalist Peter Gade, who is seeded No. 3. In the other half, second-seeded Chinese Jin Chen and former world champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, No. 4 seed this time, have a relatively easier draw. Title holder Lin's low No. 5 seeding is because his world ranking dropped due to non-participation in several Super Series events. A potential semifinal encounter between Lin and Lee could be the showpiece of the event, with Lee eager to clinch his maiden World Championship. "I'm in my top form and this is my prime time to win the World title," says Lee. "It's always tough to play against Lin Dan ... he's that sort of a player, but I've prepared hard for this challenge "He's always attacking, and one's got to produce his best game to contain him." Lee did beat Lin in the Swiss Open in March, before the Chinese outsmashed the Malaysian in straight games in the All-England final. "Earlier, I used to commit mistakes during crucial points and also succumb to pressure," says Lee, whose coach Misbun Sadek, a former world No. 2, has been working hard on ironing out these problems. Before Lin's triumphs in the World Championships at Madrid (2006) and Kuala Lumpur (2007), the only player in badminton history to have won successive men's singles titles was his compatriot Yang Yang, but that was before it became an annual event. There was no event in 2008 because it was an Olympic year. The World Championships were held every three years until 1983, and then became a biennial event from 1985. The format was changed again when it became an annual tournament from 2005. In the women's singles, another player chasing a record third title is Chinese player Xie Xingfang. Other fancied players are world No. 1 Zhou Mi of Hong Kong, the top seed, and No. 2 Wang Lin of China. Xie, silver medalist in the Beijing Olympics last year, is hoping to surpass former Chinese stars Li Lingwie, Han Aiping and Ye Zhaoying _ who all have two World championship women's singles titles to their credit. India, subject to sporadic acts of terrorist violence, has devoted heavy security to the event, with 1,000 police officers making a five-cordon security ring around the venue and team hotels.

*Source: DTN News / BWF (NSI News Source Info) HYDERABAD, India - August 13, 2009: Malaysian women's doubles pair Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Tty, top seeded in the Yonex-Sunrise World Badminton Championship, lived up to their billing by edging Sweden's Emelie Lennartsson-Emma Wengberg in the second round of the competition here Wednesday.

The Malaysian pair crushed the Swedish team 21-13, 21-11 in advancing to the third round tomorrow.

However, two other Malaysian women's doubles pairs ended their campaign in Hyderabad.

Fong Chew Yen and Mooi Hing Yau lost to Indonesia's Shendy Puspa Irawati and Meilliana Jauhari 21-14, 13-21, 18-21 while South Korean pair Lee Hyo Jung-Lee Kyung Won upset Chong Chin Sook and Woon Khe Wei 21-12, 21-11.

In the men's doubles, Malaysia's Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong thrashed Nigeria's Ola Fagbemi-Jinkan Ifraimu pair 21-5, 21-6.Earlier in the day, Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Wong Choon Hann had qualified for the third round of the men's singles while Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari won in the men's doubles.

But Malaysia's top women's singles player Wong Mew Choo was knocked out of the competition.

The 22nd-ranked Japanese came back strongly after losing the opening game, winning 16-21, 21-14, 21-13 in 57 minutes. Ninth-seeded Yu Hsing Hsieh of Taipei survived a scare in another first-round encounter, saving a match-point before ending Indian Arvind Bhat's resistance with a 21-14, 19-21, 24-22 victory. The Indian was just a point away from winning the match when he led 22-21 in the third game before faltering at crucial stages to suffer his third defeat against the same opponent. "I think I deserved to win," Bhat said. "I was feeling good with my game, but I am sad about the end result. It has often been happening in my career that I am unable to finish off matches." Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana, seeded 16th, and Raul Must of Estonia were also involved in tough matches before advancing to the second round. Ponsana downed Kestutis Navickas of Lithuania 21-14,14-21, 21-17, while Must posted a 21-16, 18-21, 21-12 victory over Russian Ivan Sozonov. Among the women there were no early upsets, with seeded Hong Kong's players Wang Chen and Yip Pui Yin and Korean Hye Youn Hwang advancing to the second round with straight-game wins.

(NSI News Source Info) HYDERABAD, India - August 11, 2009: Malaysia's veteran men's doubles pair Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah were shown an early exit by in the Yonex-Sunrise World Badminton Championship by American pair Howard Bach-Tony Gunawan here Tuesday.

The Americans, who won the 2005 world championship title, took the first game 15-21 but the seasoned Malaysian doubles pair clawed back to win the second 21-18 and force the match into a rubber.

In the deciding game the Malaysian pair, though trailing for most of the match, fought hard to draw level at 19-19 and 20-20 but eventually buckled under pressure to concede the match 21-23.

"They (Americans) played very well and we allowed them to pull away many times. Luck was on their side," Wan Wah told reporters after the match.

Meanwhile, Gunawan said the victory in the first match gave them the encouragement to fight the Malaysians.

"Winning the first game gave us confidence but we were slow in the second. It was a nervy ending but we were a little lucky too," said Gunawan.

Malaysia recorded another loss today when Goh Liu Ying/Chan Peng Soon lost tamely 16-21, 12-21 in the mixed doubles to China's Zheng Bo-Ma Jin pair.

Meanwhile, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) chief operating officer Thomas Lund told the media that the suspected coach (without naming the coach) attending the championship was still undergoing treatment and it is yet to confirm whether he was infected by the influenza A (H1N1).

"The coach is only receiving general treatment for flu like symptoms. So far there is no confirmed diagnosis and the presenting symptoms indicated that the likelihood of this being H1N1 is small," he said.

This morning a Malaysian doubles coach was admitted to the Chest Hospital in the city for treatment.

*Source: DTN News / Int'l Media (NSI News Source Info) HYDERABAD, India - August 11, 2009: Dismissing media reports, the Cyberabad police today said the BWF World Championships 2009, beginning here from August 10, was not targetted by terror elements to strike top international shuttlers gathered for the event. Cyberabad Police Commissioner S Prabhakara Reddy, acknowledged that federal authorities in Delhi had issued a general alert with regard to the upcoming Independence Day celebrations on August 15.

Police investigation and information, however, shows that there is no specific threat to the event hosted in Hyderabad.

The championships that will be held at the Gachibowli Indoor stadium has attracted nearly 330 players from 44 countries.

A section of the media reported that the could be a target for terrorists. But at a press conference in the Cyberabad Police Headquarters, Commissioner of Police Prabakhar Reddy dismissed the report and said that the rumour was not based on any credible information.

There is no specific threat to the World Championships, said Reddy.

Stressing that the security measures put in place were equivalent to the measures implemented for any top international events hosted in India, he said police is prepared for meet any eventualities.

Badminton World Federation(BWF) Secretary General Stuart Borrie welcomed the assurance from Police Commissioner and said the BWF was happy with the security measures put in place.

He said the BWF will continue to work closely with the various local authorities and has also hired a security consultant to coordinate security measures.

''The safety of the players and participants in the YONEX-SUNRISE BWF World championships is our main concern and we will work together with the police to ensure that it is achieved''said Mt Borrie.

"There was no pressure on me and I played freely," Palyama said after posting a 21-18, 21-14 victory in 36 minutes. "I knew Bao is a tough opponent, but my coach told me to keep cool. I knew I had a chance to win the match when I was leading in the second game." Bao conceded he was not at his best. "I didn't play my best game," said the Chinese. "I don't think I was on top of my game today. I could not find my rhythm."
