(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 20, 2013: Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Korean Air today announced that the airline has agreed to purchase five 747-8 Intercontinental airplanes and six 777-300ER (Extended Range) jetliners, valued at approximately $3.6 billion at current list prices. Boeing will work with Korean Air to finalize the order, at which time the order will be posted to Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website.

"Korean Air is a valued Boeing customer and their commitment to add more Boeing twin-aisle airplanes to their fleet demonstrates our strong partnership," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner. "Korean Air has steadily built its reputation as an early adopter of new technology and innovation and Boeing airplanes have played an instrumental role in that strategy."

Korean Air is the only airline in the world to order both the passenger and freighter variations of the 747-8. When today's order is finalized, Korea's flag carrier will have 10 747-8 Intercontinental airplanes on order. The airline has taken delivery of three of its seven 747-8 Freighters on order.

Korean Air currently operates a fleet of 90 Boeing passenger airplanes that consist of 737, 747 and 777 airplanes. The airline also operates an all-Boeing cargo fleet of 27 747-400, 747-8 and 777 Freighters. In February 2012, Korean Air became the first airline in the world to operate both the 747-8 and 777 Freighters.

"Boeing shares a unique relationship with Korean Air—both as a customer and a supplier for Boeing," said Conner. "Our partnership is built upon trust and is multifaceted, which brings us closer on many levels."

Korean Air's Aerospace Division is a key Boeing partner on both the 747-8 and 787 programs, supplying the distinctive raked wing-tips for each model.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - FARNBOROUGH, United Kingdom, July 9, 2012: A Korean Air Next-Generation 737-900ER (Extended Range), featuring Boeing's innovative Sky Interior, was the second Boeing [NYSE: BA] airplane to arrive at this year's Farnborough International Airshow.

"We are proud to partner with industry-leading Korean Air to show off their 737-900ER here at the 2012 Farnborough International Airshow," said Beverly Wyse, vice present and general manager of the 737 program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
 "Boeing takes great pride in knowing Korean Air is using the Sky Interior to deliver a more comfortable travel experience for its customers."

"The 737 Boeing Sky Interior is helping airlines like Korean Air to differentiate themselves from their competitors," Wyse said. 
"Passengers instantly see and feel the difference." Those differences include sculpted sidewalls and window reveals, LED lighting, larger stow bins and more intuitive placement of attendant call and light buttons.

Korean Air currently operates four 737-900ERs as well as a combination of 34 737-800s and -900s in its single-aisle fleet. The airline's fleet consists of 87 Boeing commercial jetliners. Korean Air took delivery of this airplane in May 2012.

The 737-900ER, which was called the 737-900X prior to launch, is the newest addition and the largest variant of the Boeing 737 line and was introduced to meet the range and passenger capacity of the discontinued 757-200 and to directly compete with the Airbus A321.

An additional pair of exit doors and a flat rear pressure bulkhead increase seating capacity to 180 passengers in a 2-class configuration or 215 passengers in a single-class layout. Additional fuel capacity and standard winglets improve range to that of other 737NG variants.

The first 737-900ER was rolled out of the Renton, Washington factory on August 8, 2006 for its launch customer, Lion Air. Lion Air received this aircraft on April 27, 2007 in a special dual paint scheme combining the Lion Air lion on the vertical stabilizer and the Boeing livery colors on the fuselage. Lion Air has orders for 166 737-900ERs as of August 2011.

On August 22, 2011, it was reported that Delta Air Lines had placed an order for 100 737-900ERs, the largest single order for the type.

A total of 52 -900s, 82 -900ERs, and 6 -900 BBJs have been delivered with 183 unfilled orders as of January 2011.

The Los Angeles-based leasing company took delivery of a Next-Generation 737-800, which will be leased from ALC and operated by Korean Air.

"This delivery is another major step in ALC's mission to help our airline clients modernize and grow their fleets," said John L. "The Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 is a cornerstone of our growing commercial aircraft fleet because it provides our airline customers with the most economical, fuel efficient and versatile 162 -189 seat passenger airplane in the market."

The 737-800 is the best-selling version of the successful Next-Generation 737 family. Known for its reliability, fuel efficiency and economical performance, the 737-800 is selected by leading carriers throughout the world because it provides operators the flexibility to serve a wide range of markets.

Korean Air is the first Asian airline to order the passenger version of the new, fuel-efficient 747-8. The airplanes have a total average list price value of $1.5 billion. Korean Air already has arrangements to operate seven 747-8 Freighters. "This is a great day in the history of our long and enduring partnership with Korean Air," said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The technologically advanced 747-8 Intercontinental is particularly well suited for Korean Air's operations. It will provide exceptional levels of passenger comfort, greatly enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced emissions and noise. The announcement comes at an exciting time as we move closer to the first 747-8 Freighter flight in early 2010." Korean Air plans on flying the 747-8 Intercontinental on long-haul routes to the Americas and Europe. "The 747-8 Intercontinental fills the void between the 300- and 550-seat airplanes in our future fleet," said Won Tae Cho, managing vice president of Korean Air Passenger Business Division. "The technological enhancements Boeing has made to this airplane will deliver exceptional economics and a flying experience that will thrill our customers, enabling Korean Air to provide Excellence in Flight to our customers." The new 747-8 Intercontinental is stretched 18.3 feet (5.6 m) from the 747-400 to provide 467 seats in a three-class configuration, an additional 51 seats. It also offers a range of 8,000 nautical miles (14,815 km). Using the new GEnx-2B engines, the 747-8 provides airlines a quieter, more fuel-efficient airplane. The 747-8 also provides nearly equivalent trip costs and 13 percent lower seat-mile costs than the 747-400, plus 26 percent greater cargo volume. The 747-8 also features a new wing design and an upgraded flight deck. The airplane interior incorporates features from the 787 Dreamliner, including a new curved, upswept architecture that will give passengers a greater sense of space and comfort, while adding more room for personal belongings. The architecture will be accentuated by lighting technology that provides smooth transitions for a more restful flight. The 747 program is in the later stages of the 747-8 Intercontinental design phase. Assembly on the airplane is set to begin around mid-2010, with the first delivery of the passenger version scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2011. With the addition of the Korean Air order, Boeing has secured 110 orders for the 747-8. Thirty-two of the orders are for the 747-8 Intercontinental, and the remaining 78 are for the 747-8 Freighter.
