DTN News: Bombardier Likely To Unveil C-Series Order - Source

DTN News: Bombardier Likely To Unveil C-Series Order - Source
Source: DTN News / Reuters
(NSI News Source Info) FARNBOROUGH, England, - July 19, 2010: Canada's Bombardier (BBDb.TO) is likely to announce at least one order for its new C-Series plane at the Farnborough Airshow this week, a source familiar with the project told Reuters on Sunday. The move could put pressure on Boeing (BA.N) and Airbus (EAD.PA) to upgrade their own narrow-body airplanes, the source said, asking not to be identified. "There is serious interest in the airplane," said the source, who has direct knowledge of the program. There has been speculation that airlines such as Qatar Airways may place an order for the new 110-130 seat Bombardier jet, which aims to compete with Airbus and Boeing at the lower end of their 110-185 seat short- and medium-haul passenger jets. "We are talking to many customers about C-Series. We are in no position to confirm any new orders for C-Series ... simply because it hasn't happened," said John Arnone, a spokesman for Bombardier Commercial Airplanes. Qatar Airways has called a news conference immediately after Bombardier on Monday, but has not disclosed the subject. The airline is also an active buyer of other aircraft. Asked if Bombardier could make any big announcements at the biennial air show this week, the source said, "That is certainly a strong possibility." Bombardier has secured orders for 90 of the C-Series planes, which sell for around $50 million to $77 million at list prices, as well as 90 options. Arnone added Bombardier has more than 60 active "campaigns," or ongoing talks with potential customers.

DTN News: Bombardier CSeries Aircraft Program Reaches Another Milestone Source: DTN News / Int'l Media (NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, ONT. Canada - March 25, 2010: Construction of the facility that will build the fuselage for the all-new Bombardier CSeries mainline commercial jetliner has begun. The event - another milestone in Bombardier's progress toward a 2013 entry-into-service for the CSeries aircraft - was marked with a foundation stone-laying ceremony today at the site in Shenyang, China. The 21,000 m2 (226,042 ft2) facility will be operated by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC), a subsidiary of the state-owned aviation industrial entity, China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC). SAC is a key supplier in the Bombardier CSeries aircraft program. Pierre Beaudoin, President and Chief Executive Officer, Bombardier Inc. took part in the ceremony at the Shenyang National Aviation and High Technology Industrial Base in Dongling District. "This ceremony marks a new milestone in the strategic cooperation between Shenyang, AVIC, China and Bombardier," said Mr. Beaudoin. "Bombardier believes in the China aviation industry and is encouraged to see the further development of the Shenyang National Aviation and High Technology Industrial Base as a center of design and manufacturing excellence." SAC delivered the first test article in the CSeries aircraft program - a fuselage test barrel - to Bombardier's Saint-Laurent, Quebec site on August 19, 2009. The test barrel is being used to demonstrate manufacturing and engineering structural concepts before the CSeries aircraft's final design phase begins later this year. It has already been subjected to 40,000 simulated flight cycles of testing. The Shenyang facility joins two other new CSeries aircraft installations that are already under construction. In September 2009, Bombardier celebrated the groundbreaking of the first CSeries aircraft building in Quebec, Canada. Located in Mirabel, 45 minutes north of Montreal, the Complete Integrated Aircraft Systems Test Area (CIASTA) will test aircraft systems for reliability and functionality one year before the first prototype aircraft flies. In November 2009, construction got under way on the company's new state-of-the-art aircraft wing manufacturing and assembly facility in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Since launching the CSeries family of aircraft at the Farnborough Air Show in July 2008, Bombardier has recorded firm orders for a total of 90 CSeries aircraft which includes an order from Republic Airways for 40 CS300 aircraft, another from Deutsche Lufthansa AG for 30 CS100 aircraft, and one from Lease Corporation International Group for 17 CS300 and three CS100 aircraft. The program has also booked options for an additional 90 CSeries aircraft. DTN News: Bombardier Enhanced Vision System For Challenger 605 Jet Receives FAA Certification

DTN News: Bombardier Enhanced Vision System For Challenger 605 Jet Receives FAA Certification *Source: DTN News / Aviation News (NSI News Source Info) MONTREAL, Canada - December 13, 2009: Bombardier Aerospace today announced that the Bombardier Enhanced Vision System (BEVS) and Head-up Display (HUD) for the Challenger 605 jet has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification. BEVS provides pilots with significantly improved situational awareness and the ability to observe runway lights and the runway environment in difficult operating conditions, such as low visibility and or darkness. BEVS also enhances safety by helping to identify runway incursions. “This certification is great news for Challenger 605 aircraft operators in North America. Safety is a priority in our industry and the new BEVS will provide flight crews and passengers with a significantly increased level of safety in their operations,” said Michel Ouellette, vice-president and general manager, Challenger, Bombardier Business Aircraft. Operators selecting BEVS benefit from several advantages over other systems. The SureSight® CMA-2600i InfraRed camera provides superior sensitivity and advanced processing of real-time images in darkness or low-visibility conditions. The camera’s positioning on the upper portion of the aircraft nose places the BEVS directly in line with the pilot's visual reference point and makes cockpit views more natural. It provides images of the approach, runway lighting and of terrain scenery that are displayed on the pilot’s head up display (HUD) and on the co-pilot’s Multi Function Display, a head-down display that provides the same level of situational awareness for better communication during critical phases of flight. The BEVS HUD display features a wide field-of-view digital head-up display with a liquid crystal display image source. The system provides pilots with the same comprehensive flight-guidance symbology whether the EVS image is displayed or not, offering improved situational awareness, stable visual approaches, improved touchdown precision and greater safety through eyes-out-of-the-flight-deck operation. BEVS is being developed in cooperation with Rockwell Collins, the overall HUD and Enhanced Vision System integrator, and Esterline CMC Electronics, the supplier of the SureSight CMA-2600i Integrated Sensor System, a new development of the currently certified CMA-2600. The Challenger 605 jet features the widest stand-up cabin of any large category business jet available today. It is equipped with the Pro Line 21 avionics suite and an all new cabin electronic system. This jet can whisk five-passengers from Montreal - Moscow non-stop*, in superior comfort. The Bombardier Enhanced Vision System (BEVS) is offered as optional equipement on the Challenger 605 jet. About Bombardier

DTN News: Bombardier Celebrates Groundbreaking For New CSeries Aircraft Manufacturing Site

DTN News: Bombardier Celebrates Groundbreaking For New CSeries Aircraft Manufacturing Site *Source: DTN News / Defense News (Click here for link)
(NSI News Source Info) MONTREAL, QUEBEC, Canada - September 16, 2009: Yesterday Sept 15, marked a major achievement for the CSeries aircraft program as Bombardier Aerospace celebrated the groundbreaking of the first CSeries aircraft building in Quebec, Canada. Located at Mirabel, 45 minutes north of Montreal, the Complete Integrated Aircraft Systems Test Area (CIASTA) is a testing and systems-proving facility that will house a virtual CSeries test aircraft. The CIASTA will test aircraft systems for reliability and functionality one year before the first prototype aircraft flies. Attended by Bombardier's employees, suppliers, partners, customers and the media, the groundbreaking lays the path for the new aircraft's entry into service in 2013. "It's a red-letter day for the program and an important day for Bombardier Aerospace," noted Guy Hachey, President and Chief Operating Officer, Bombardier Aerospace in his remarks to the assembled guests. "Today we begin work on the facilities that will be the site of the first CSeries test aircraft. Eventually we will erect a complex of buildings here that will total 860,000 square feet - that's the size of 15 football fields - to produce the CSeries family of aircraft." The CIASTA will be constructed as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building, the first such building for Bombardier Aerospace in the world. LEED is a third-party certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. The design and construction of the CIASTA is on track and is expected to be ready for test rig assembly next year. Wieland-Dafco Quebec Inc. and Ghafari Associates LLC have been contracted to construct the building. As part of Bombardier's mandate to contribute to a more sustainable future for aviation, the company's priority is to design and manufacture the most fuel-efficient aircraft with the lowest gas and noise emissions in their category. The mandate also extends to Bombardier's manufacturing processes and facilities. Making effective use of existing resources where possible, the CIASTA will be reconstructed from an existing fuel-flow building. "We seek consistency and uniformity when it comes to being greener whether it's our aircraft or the facilities in which they are tested and built," said Mr. Hachey. The CIASTA will house, among other things, the CSeries aircraft Integrated Systems Test and Certification Rig (ISTCR) or Iron Bird as it is usually called. This will be the first complete test vehicle enabling earlier product maturity. Flight control systems, avionics, electrical and environmental controls will be tested one year ahead of the actual flight test program. Other test articles will include an Interiors Rig, a Systems Integration Test Stand (SITS), an Engineering Simulator (ESIM) and Flight Controls Integration Lab (FCIL). Bombardier achieved another milestone for the CSeries aircraft program recently when the first test article - a fuselage test barrel - arrived ahead of schedule at its Saint-Laurent, Quebec site from China on August 19, 2009. The test barrel is now being prepared for fatigue testing including pressure cycle testing representative of the life of the aircraft. The test barrel will be used to demonstrate manufacturing and engineering structural concepts before the CSeries aircraft's final design phase begins in 2010. Earlier this year, the CSeries aircraft program officially transitioned from the Joint Conceptual Definition Phase (JCDP) to the Joint Definition Phase (JDP). The latter phase will bring with it greater product definition and is expected to close with the preliminary design freeze. Since launching the CSeries family of aircraft at the Farnborough Air Show in July 2008, Bombardier has recorded firm orders for 50 CS100 and CS300 aircraft from Deutsche Lufthansa AG and Lease Corporation International Group. The CSeries aircraft which are optimized for the longer range, single-aisle 100- to 145-seat market will deliver the lowest operating costs in their class, exceptional operational flexibility, widebody comfort and an unmatched environmental scorecard. DTN News: Bombardier And BVG Sign A Contract For 99 FLEXITY Berlin Vehicles

DTN News: Bombardier And BVG Sign A Contract For 99 FLEXITY Berlin Vehicles *Source: DTN News / Bombardier
(NSI News Source Info) BERLIN, Germany - September 2, 2009: Following the approval of the supervisory board of Berlin’s transport operator, Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) on 29th June 2009, a contract for 99 BOMBARDIER FLEXITY Berlin trams has now been signed between the BVG and Bombardier Transportation. The order is valued at around 300 million euros ($431 million US). The order follows a framework agreement in 2006 for a maximum of 210 vehicles and includes 40 long and 24 short one-way vehicles as well as 35 short bidirectional vehicles trams.
The first vehicles will be delivered in May 2011, with an expected completion date for all vehicles in 2017. This will coincide with the deployment of the GT6 series vehicles and the phasing-out of the Tatra high-floor vehicles. The FLEXITY Berlin trams will be well prepared for future applications and will be 100% barrier-free.
Andreas Sturmowski, Chairman of the Management Board of the BVG, commented: "The delivery of the vehicles will commence in May 2011 with the long vehicles intended for lines M4 and M8. All other new vehicles will predominantly be used on all tram lines and Line 50. A further anticipated 33 vehicles, whose structure type is still to be determined with the state of Berlin, will ensure the complete replacement of the 237 Tatra vehicles still currently in use. This will result in lower operating costs and will further enhance the attractiveness of trams as a form of transportation for our passengers. We would especially like to thank the state of Berlin for assuming the financing defined within the framework of the transportation agreement."
"Berliners can look forward to more attractive, environmentally-friendly, modern and new trams. All trams will be barrier-free by 2017 thanks to these vehicles. The BVG has succeeded in responding to customer requirements while making urban transit even more appealing. In times where we have to meet the challenges of demographic changes, improvements such as the absence of barriers in passenger transportation are an important element in increasing Berlin's attractiveness overall," said Ingeborg Junge-Reyer, Senator for Urban Development.
The new trams will be produced at the following Bombardier sites in Germany: Bautzen (body shell and final assembly), Hennigsdorf (final assembly and commissioning), Mannheim (electronics) and Siegen (bogies).
Grego Peters, Bombardier Transportation’s President of the Light Rail Vehicles Business Unit, commented: "The current call-off of 99 vehicles by the BVG is a further milestone in our long and successful collaboration with the operator. We're delighted that the pilot series operation of the FLEXITY Berlin tram has received such a positive response from the operator and its passengers, demonstrating that our advanced vehicle concept has made a good impression."
All Tatra vehicles that are not barrier-free will be successively replaced by the new FLEXITY Berlin generation of trams. 237 Tatra vehicles are still currently in service. These were modernised between 1994 and 1997 to be used for a further 16 years. However, it was not possible to make the vehicles fully accessible within the modernisation framework. The Tatra vehicles will reach the end of their permitted operation at the start of 2010. The Tatra trams will no longer be suitable for use without further, costly renovations.
The Tatra vehicles will be replaced by the 99 FLEXITY Berlin vehicles now ordered as well as an order planned by the BVG for 2010 comprising a further 33 anticipated vehicles. The structure type of this second order is still to be determined and depends on Berlin's urban transport plan. Operating together with the current type GT6 low-floor vehicles, the new trams will result in reduced operating costs for the BVG. They will also significantly increase the attractiveness for passengers and will establish a complete absence of barriers in Berlin's tram network in the medium-term.
The concept of the FLEXITY Berlin tram was developed together by BVG and Bombardier Transportation especially for the German capital. The result is a means of public transport in cities that are geared to the future, with step-less entrances and easier accessibility for passengers with limited mobility. The interior is characterised by its generous passenger space, as well as multifunction compartments and air conditioned passenger areas. The noise levels are lower than that of the trams used up until now. The vehicles have low electricity consumption and feed back electricity into the braking system.
Generally, two Tatra vehicles can be replaced by one new tram in up to four different versions of the FLEXITY Berlin.
The four different designs are: Total no. of places Seated places 40 m one-way vehicle 248 84 40 m bidirectional vehicle 245 72 30.8 m one-way vehicle 189 60 30.8 m bidirectional vehicle 184 52 The order for long bidirectional vehicles, which have not yet been included in the 99 vehicles, depends on decisions to be made by the state of Berlin regarding the development of the track network for the tram. A tram type conversion detailed in this order is still possible within certain time limits.
The first passenger surveys regarding the new vehicle type of the Berlin tram have revealed very positive responses overall. The following were singled out as particularly positive: *Significantly better passenger information, in particular in the passenger compartments, which are equipped with TFT dual monitors that can be viewed from every seat. In comparison to the existing vehicles, the space on offer is considerably better for standing and seated passengers. The new vehicles are 20 cm wider than the Tatra vehicles and 10 cm wider than the existing low-floor vehicles. *Two multifunctional areas each for wheelchair users, passengers with prams, luggage and bicycles. *Stops without platforms do not have any barriers either thanks to a patented mechanical folding ramp at every other door in the direction of travel. *Passenger compartment and cab air conditioning. *Impressive exterior and interior design. The design is inspired by the Bauhaus style and gives the trains an appearance unique to Berlin, which is combined with the BVG’s corporate design. The design is the result of an intensive, interdisciplinary work process between the BVG, Bombardier and the design studio commissioned by Bombardier, IFS from Adlershof, Berlin. The design is fit for its purpose, namely functional and timelessly elegant, matching the design characteristics of the BVG vehicle fleet. However, feedback with suggested improvements from passengers, especially the associations for passengers with disabilities, included for example, the arrangement of fixtures for holding onto, seating arrangements in bidirectional vehicles and parking positions for wheelchair users. These comments have all been taken into account as part of the call-off for the production vehicles.
