(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - May 20, 2011: AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, is pleased to announce that AgustaWestland North America, Inc. was awarded a $37.8 million contract with the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) Contracting Center for Foreign Military Sales to the Egyptian Air Force.

AgustaWestland will configure two Pennsylvania-built AW139s for search and rescue missions; support the U.S. Army in training aircrews; and provide a spare parts package to ensure successful fielding of the aircraft. Designed with inherent multi-role capability and flexibility of operation, the AW139 offers unmatched performance and safety levels as well as the largest cabin in its class. AgustaWestland manages an active, highly efficient AW139 production line in the company’s Philadelphia, Pa. manufacturing facility, where it will also produce the recently added, advanced military AW139M.
With unrivalled range and the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class, the AW139 sets standards of multi-mission performance in high and hot conditions and with a cruise speed of 165 knots. The AW139 features a low acoustic signature, integrated mission avionics and is available with a full ice protection system, allowing aircrews to accomplish missions in the most demanding, all-weather conditions.
More than 140 customers in 50 countries use the medium-twin engine AW139 for multi-mission roles. As the most modern helicopter designed and produced in the last decade, more than 530 AW139s have been sold, flying demanding missions for government customers such as the United States Department of Homeland Security, the Republic of Ireland, the UAE Air Force and others.

The AW139 has achieved great success in Malaysia in recent years with orders placed by local operators for corporate, fire fighting, EMS/SAR and coast patrol missions. State-of-the-art technology, outstanding performance, low operating costs and the only helicopter in its class to meet the latest safety standards, have made the AW139 the helicopter of choice in the medium twin market. The two powerful PT6C-67C turboshaft engines, each producing 1,252 kW (1,679 shp) give the AW139 class leading performance with a maximum cruise speed of 167 knots (310 km/h). The aircraft has a range of over 1000 km or an endurance of over 5 hours with auxiliary fuel, making it ideal for long range transport and for border patrol missions. The cockpit features the latest technology including a Honeywell Primus Epic® fully integrated avionics system, a 4-axis digital Automatic Flight Control System and large flat panel colour displays - reducing pilot workload and allowing the crew to concentrate on the mission.
Over 470 orders have been placed by almost 130 customers from over 50 countries to date, making it the benchmark helicopter in the medium twin category for a wide range of roles including EMS/SAR, offshore transport, VIP/corporate transport, law enforcement, fire fighting and other government duties.

The flat floor and ceiling provide maximum cabin space and easy reconfiguration. An eight cubic meter cabin that is 1.42 meters high allows medical attendants easy access to casualties. Litter layout ranges from two to four in medevac configuration. If cabin access to the large baggage compartment is utilized, litter capacity can be increased to six.
