(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada / OSHKOSH, Wis - August 15, 2011: Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK), will present its TerraMax™ Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) technology at the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) Unmanned Systems 2011, hosted August 16-19 in Washington, D.C. The TerraMax technology recently completed its first limited technical assessment for the U.S. Marine Corps Cargo UGV initiative, and Oshkosh will soon begin training Marines to independently conduct autonomous convoy missions for evaluation.

The Cargo UGV program utilizes an Oshkosh Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) equipped with Oshkosh’s TerraMax UGV technology, resulting in an unmanned vehicle that has the potential to increase operator’s situational awareness, or reduce Warfighters’ exposure to lethal attacks. The Cargo UGV program is sponsored by the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory (MCWL) and the Joint Ground Robotics Enterprise (JGRE) Robotics Technology Consortium (RTC).

“The first limited technical assessment of Oshkosh’s TerraMax technology on the MTVR involved numerous tests and successful results, including obstacle avoidance, leader-follower behavior, GPS-denied operation and water crossings,” said John Beck, chief unmanned systems engineer for Oshkosh Corporation. “We are excited to be getting this technology into the hands of the Marines next week, when we train them to operate the system and gain their valuable feedback on its performance in a tactical environment.”

Accomplishments achieved during the Cargo UGV program’s first limited technical assessment included:

  • Completion of more than six miles of driving without GPS input
  • Successful avoidance of all obstacles
  • Successful tracking of a variety of cooperative and non-cooperative vehicles

Oshkosh has advanced its TerraMax technology to deliver high performing road-following behavior, even in the absence of GPS. Oshkosh is incorporating short-range radars to provide 360-degree close-proximity obstacle detection and avoidance, which will allow a TerraMax-equipped vehicle to operate safely around pedestrians and in traffic, even in dusty conditions. Oshkosh received a contract for the Cargo UGV initiative in June 2010.

The Oshkosh TerraMax UGV technology is designed to retain a vehicle’s original payload and performance capabilities. Designed as a scalable kit, it can be integrated on vehicles, including those built by other manufacturers, as they are produced or retrofitted on existing vehicle fleets. The TerraMax technology can function in the same weather conditions and operating environments as manned vehicles, requiring minimal human interaction and operator training.

Oshkosh executives will be on hand with the TerraMax-equipped Cargo UGV at AUVSI to discuss the vehicle at booth #3230.

(NSI News Source Info) OSHKOSH, Wis. — April 3, 2009: Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation, announced today it is working in conjunction with the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) to develop and evaluate potential new and innovative uses of the company’s autonomous technology. As a result, Oshkosh will gain the military application data needed to refine its autonomous technology and move it closer to production. TerraMax™—The future of unmanned ground vehicles and leader-follower technology. Completely autonomous, requiring no driver and no remote control, the TerraMax was developed to help take troops out of harm’s way and reduce the personnel necessary to maintain supply lines. Based on Oshkosh’s MTVR (Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement) defense truck, TerraMax is equipped with technologies that include complex sensing systems, high-power computers and drive-by-wire technology. TerraMax was one of only five vehicles, and the only tactical cargo hauler, to complete the 2005 DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Grand Challenge’s 132-mile desert course. TerraMax exhibited obstacle avoidance, GPS waypoint following, and 30 hours of continuous operation—all applicable to military missions. Oshkosh has already integrated unmanned and leader-follower technology in the PLS, a 10-wheel-drive truck and trailer system. On November 3, 2007 Team Oshkosh competed in the third DARPA Grand Challenge, the Urban Challenge, which called for teams to compete to build an autonomous vehicle able to complete a 60-mile urban course safely in less than six hours. TerraMax was one of only 11 teams to qualify for the finals, and did so by demonstrating the advanced navigation and traffic skills required to safely compete in the race. After the qualification test Dr. Tony Tether, director of DARPA complimented the team on being the safest performer on the merging vehicle course of the 11 chosen to compete. The NSWC will be sponsoring these cooperative operations, which will involve Oshkosh’s unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), TerraMax™, and take place at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. TerraMax is based on Oshkosh’s Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) 4x4, and the NSWC will investigate the use of TerraMax as a Roboticized-MTVR (R-MTVR) in different mission-specific scenarios. If successful, the work could lead to new uses of UGVs and autonomous technologies on the battlefield. “Oshkosh Defense is excited to be breaking new ground in the autonomous-technology field with the NSWC,” said Andy Hove, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Defense. “We are still in the early exploratory stages of finding ways we can make missions safer for our soldiers through the use of UGVs, and opportunities such as these are important first steps.” TerraMax features the Oshkosh Command Zone® drive-by-wire technology, which allows computer-controlled steering and direct electronic control of the acceleration, braking and transmission systems. The vehicle also features a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system, camera-based vision and a GPS/IMU system for operation and navigation purposes.

Oshkosh to Further Develop Unmanned Ground Vehicle Technology / Oshkosh Defense Signs Agreement With U.S. Army To Further Develop Unmanned Ground Vehicle Technology (NSI News Source Info) OSHKOSH, Wis. - January 27, 2009: Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation, today signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Army's Tank and Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) to refine technology for the operation of unmanned ground vehicles in convoy missions in real-world environments. The CRADA calls for a three-year collaboration between the Army and Oshkosh to integrate a Convoy Active Safety Technology (CAST) surrogate system onto Oshkosh's unmanned TerraMax(TM) vehicle. The objective is to create a lead vehicle that can navigate and operate in missions, while communicating route information to another unmanned follower vehicle. The vehicles must be able to operate near-autonomous in a safe manner among people, animals, vehicles and other obstacles at operational speeds and in tactical environments. "Oshkosh Defense has a long history of developing military vehicle technology and building trucks that help protect U.S. service men and women," said Thom Mathes, executive director of product development for TARDEC. "This commitment and knowledge will help TARDEC increase the overall system effectiveness of the unmanned vehicle program so our soldiers can effectively and safely conduct specified military missions." Oshkosh Defense first developed unmanned ground vehicle technology in response to a Department of Defense mandate that one-third of military vehicles will be operated autonomously - without drivers - by 2015. A framework for technology development was provided through Oshkosh's participation in the 2004 and 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge events and 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge event. The Oshkosh TerraMax completed the 132-mile course in 2005 and was a finalist in 2007. "Both Oshkosh Defense and TARDEC have devoted valuable energy and R&D resources to develop unmanned ground vehicle technology," said John Stoddart, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president, Defense. "By leveraging each other's knowledge and experience, our plan is to meet the military's 2015 goal and ultimately help save soldiers' lives." Under the CRADA, Oshkosh will provide the necessary hardware and software and assist with integrating the CAST system to ensure it interacts with TerraMax effectively. Furthermore, Oshkosh will use the data to add or modify the vehicle's behavior modes and trajectory generation to affect relevant tactical behaviors for convoy missions. Oshkosh also will provide non-proprietary platform information to assist in the integration of CAST technology into other Oshkosh vehicles, such as the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) or Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET). Additionally, Oshkosh Defense will work to integrate the platform and modeling evaluations of prototyped and simulated components and systems.
