The guide-to-target flight demonstrations, conducted at Ft. Sill, Okla., confirmed the ability of the 81mm ADM using a novel guidance kit and fuze to provide a precision strike capability for Tactical-Class Unmanned Aircraft (TUAV). The ADM was released from a TUAV using the company’s newly developed “Smart Rack” carriage and release system that enables weaponization of any TUAV platform. Application of RCFC technology to the 81mm air-dropped guided mortar has been developed in conjunction with the U.S. Army’s Armament Research Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) in Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. ARDEC developed and successfully tested environmental sensors for the guidance kit’s fuzing system. The results from the Ft. Sill flight tests built on previously successful 81mm air-dropped guided mortar guide-to-target flight demonstrations by General Dynamics and ARDEC in Kingman, Ariz., in December 2008. Designed to meet the needs of the U.S. Army, Marine Corps and Special Forces for a rapid target response capability, the ADM uses existing mortar inventory to provide a low-cost, lightweight weapon system with proven energetics. The company’s patented Roll Controlled Fixed Canard (RCFC) guidance kit, with an innovative flight-control and GPS-based guidance and navigational system, adds precision strike capability to existing mortars. TIROS-1 demonstrated the advantage of mapping Earth’s cloud cover from satellite altitudes. The first views revealed clouds banded and clustered in unexpected ways. The mission also succeeded in verifying experimental television techniques designed to develop a worldwide meteorological satellite information system, and testing Sun angle and horizon sensor systems for spacecraft orientation. While the satellite operated for only 78 days, it paved the way for far more robust spacecraft that have made a lasting impact on weather prediction. In all, 44 TIROS satellites were launched between 1960 and 2009. Through five decades of service, they have earned the reputation as the workhorses of the Civil Space Earth-imaging inventory. The current generation of civilian weather satellites has a direct lineage to TIROS-1. The Advanced TIROS-N satellite series are called Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES). The satellites are acquired and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and once on-orbit operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). A constellation consists of two POES satellites circling the planet in nearly north-south orbits. As the Earth rotates, the entire globe, one swath at a time rolls into view of the satellites’ instruments. The satellites provide measurements of reflected solar and radiated thermal energy from land, sea, clouds, and the atmosphere in the visible and infrared spectrum, atmospheric soundings of temperature and humidity, measurements of global sea surface temperature, aerosol distribution data, ozone concentration data, soil moisture data, and measurements of orbital proton and electron flux. Together these data comprise irreplaceable inputs to the numerical weather forecast model and are vital to medium and long-range forecasting. Separately or in combination, the data are utilized to produce sea-surface temperature maps, ice condition charts, vegetation maps, and other forecasting and management tools. Data from these spacecraft also support a broad range of environmental monitoring applications including weather analysis and forecasting, climate research and prediction, ocean dynamics research, volcanic eruption monitoring, and forest fire detection. Additionally, POES satellites – and NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) satellites – carry two search and rescue instruments that are used internationally for locating ships, aircraft, and people in distress. The use of satellites in search and rescue has been instrumental in saving more than 24,500 lives since the inception of the Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking (SARSAT) system. POES satellites also collect data from remote platforms and provide direct broadcast of environmental data worldwide. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, in Greenbelt, Md., is responsible for the procurement, development, launch services, and verification of the POES spacecraft, instruments, and unique ground equipment. Following spacecraft launch, Goddard is responsible for satellite health and safety during a comprehensive on-orbit verification period that lasts 45 days. Following satellite checkout, NASA turns operational control over to NOAA, which operates the satellites from its Satellite Operations Control Center along with the nation's other environmental satellites. NOAA's environmental satellite system is composed of two types of satellites: POES for global, long-term forecasting and environmental monitoring; and GOES for national, regional, short-range warning and “now-casting.” Lockheed Martin and its heritage companies built all of the POES satellites going back to the very first weather satellite launch on April 1, 1960, and is currently developing the next generation GOES-R satellite system, with a first launch set for 2015. JAGM will provide a precision, adverse weather, low-collateral-damage weapon to rotary- and fixed-wing pilots, as well as the unmanned aerial system community. LOUIS, - April 2, 2010: The U.S. Department of Defense on March 31 said it will extend the deadline to receive proposals in the U.S. Air Force KC-X Tanker competition from May 10 to July 9 if European Aeronautic Defence and Space (EADS) makes a formal request for an extension. The Boeing Company today responded with the following statement: “We are deeply disappointed with EADS-Airbus efforts to further delay this vital warfighting program and tilt the U.S. procurement process in its favor. EADS-Airbus has been fully engaged in the competition for four years and was always expected to provide the vast majority of its team’s work content. “We welcome the denial of EADS’s repeated requests to alter U.S. warfighting requirements, and we support the Air Force’s stated intent to provide a level playing field for qualified competitors. We do not see a legitimate reason for EADS’s bid deadline extension request, and we believe an extension that favors any individual competitor does not further the goal of ensuring fair competition. “Boeing remains fully prepared to submit a competitive proposal by the May 10 deadline originally set by the Air Force. However, this latest development, along with the World Trade Organization’s recent final ruling that Airbus has been heavily and illegally subsidized for decades, requires Boeing to review all of our options for going forward while we wait for a final determination on a deadline extension.”

The contract underlines the company's capabilities in the area of readiness and sustainment and is the latest in a number of significant military aircraft support contracts awarded by the MOD in the last 12 months. Totalling £1.5 billion the contracts are; Hawk In-Service Support, Harrier Platform Availability Contract (HPAC), Typhoon Availability Service (TAS) and Radar and Defensive Aids Sub Systems (RDASS) for Typhoon. Readiness and sustainment activity accounts for around 40 per cent of BAE Systems' revenue in 2009. This latest contract, also known as Hawk In-Service Support (ISS) means that BAE Systems is responsible for ensuring the AJT fleet, also known as Hawk TMk2, is available for training the RAF's fast jet pilots at RAF Valley. The contract runs until 2014 and builds upon the success that BAE Systems has had supporting the Hawk TMk1 aircraft and other aircraft including the Tornado and Harrier. The UK's RAF received the first of its 28 Hawk TMk2 aircraft in the summer of 2009. With 22 aircraft delivered to date the final aircraft will be delivered to the RAF this year. Martin Rushton, Managing Director of BAE Systems' Training & Hawk UK business, said: "Signature of the Hawk ISS contact represents recognition of BAE Systems' readiness and sustainment capabilities and is a significant milestone for the joint MOD, RAF and BAE Systems team. The deal was sealed days after the company lost a major contract to supply armored vehicles to the British army. Even so, the deal was part of a string of contracts that BAE Systems -- Europe's biggest military contractor -- was awarded by the British ministry of defense. The contract for the 155-millimeter self-propelled artillery guns systems is in line with a decision by the British military brass to develop a "a medium-caliber cannon by CTA International, an Anglo-French joint venture between BAE Systems and Nexter Group, formerly known as Giat Industries, The Wall Street Journal reported. BAE officials said the first operational systems would be delivered to both Sweden and Norway in October, with production continuing over the following two years. The deal marks a much-need lifeline for a $146 million development program launched by BAE in 2003. "Archer is an important program for the armed forces of both countries and for BAE Systems' land business, as it is in a core area for us and will provide a springboard for future exports," Mike Smith, managing director of BAE Systems, Global Combat Systems Weapons said in a company statement. "We appreciate the effort and cooperation that the FMV and FLO -- the national procurement agencies -- have invested in ensuring the procurement of the most advanced and capable artillery system for the Swedish and Norwegian armies." Archer is an advanced and automated artillery gun system designed for rapid deployment and high mobility in the most demanding operational scenarios, a company statement said. Its digital fire control system and automatic gun-laying capability allows a response to calls for fire within 30 seconds while the ordnance is securely stowed and ready for rapid redeployment within 30 seconds of the completion of a fire mission, the statement added. Earlier this week, the British company also secured a multimillion-dollar deal to produce a new generation of combat ships for the British navy as well as construction of the fifth Astute-class submarine. Many countries, primarily in Europe, have moved to increasing invest in all aspects of their military. The upgrade program currently prevailing is the F-35, replacing outdated F-16 combat aircraft in many NATO countries. BAE joined forces with Saab in 1995 to co-market the Gripen combat aircraft but the venture ended nine years later. BAE retained its majority stake in Saab, although half of that was sold this year a holding company of Sweden's influential Wallenburg family.

Britain said this week it would cut its A400M orders by three to a total of 22 planes. While France is sticking to its 50 orders, Germany is mulling to trim its contract for 60 planes, German newspapers reported. Other partner governments include Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain and Turkey. European defense officials said the new contract could be signed as early as June. The cuts are apparently part of a March 7 deal between Airbus' parent European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company and the partner nations, which have agreed to pay an additional $2.7 billion for the planes, a pass on penalties on current delays and a new delivery schedule. The bailout plan, worth $4.8 billion in total, followed threats from the European aerospace company to pull the plug on the project if an agreement to refinance construction of the A400M military transport plane wasn't swiftly reached. The project was agreed to in 2003 with Airbus ordered to construct 180 A400Ms at a fixed price of $29 billion. Technical delays, ballooning costs and political blunders caused delays in project, however, with the plane's maiden voyage taking place only last December in Seville, Spain. The project now is expected to cost around 50 percent more than original estimates and is three to four years behind schedule. The partner countries desperately need a new freighter plane: Britain is eager to modernize its fleet of Hercules and C-17 carriers, worn by the mission in Afghanistan; and France and Germany want new transport planes to replace their 4-decade-old C-160 Transall machines, which are slow and inflexible. Airbus claims the A400M can carry double the load of the hugely popular Lockheed C130 Hercules, also a four-engine turboprop, and is more fuel-efficient than the jet-powered Boeing C-17. Meanwhile, officials in the partner nations harshly criticized the management failures linked to the program. "There is clearly a problem of organization and industrial management," he said. "EADS and Airbus have drawn conclusions on organization but they have to work harder on their capacity to manage programs," Laurent Collet-Billon, the head of the French arms procurement office was quoted as saying by Defensenews.com. "I think EADS has to make a very big effort to improve its management culture."

Israel has trained the Turkish personnel who will operate the drones and first tests were also conducted, Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul told reporters at parliament on Thursday. The long-delayed delivery of the Israeli-made surveillance drones followed Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak's fence-mending trip to Turkey in January. In 2005, Turkey signed a contract with Israel to purchase 10 Heron unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) worth more than $180 million from Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Elbit Systems, Ltd. Heron drone, capable of flying at an altitude of 30,000 feet for 30 hours, has been estimated by foreign experts to have a maximum operating range of 3,300 kilometers (2,000 miles). Turkey, one of the few Middle East states that has maintained diplomatic ties with Israel, remains a voiced critic of Tel Aviv's actions against the Palestinian nation, including the closure of al-Aqsa Mosque to Palestinians, the siege of Gaza, and the weeks-long offensive in the coastal sliver that left over 1,400 Gazans killed.

The delivery of the heavily-protected personnel and material carrier ‘DINGO 2’ will be done by the year end. "This short delivery period underlines the flexibility and industrial performance of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann", says Frank Haun, CEO and Chairman of the Board of KMW in an official news release. The DINGO 2 is a protected wheeled vehicle as its crew gets protection against all modern small arms, artillery shrapnel, anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and NBC warfare agents. DINGO 2 is equipped with light weapons station of the type FLW 100, as defensive weaponry, and can carry different sets of armaments (e.g. machines guns). It is air-transportable on C160-Transall, C130 Hercules and the A400M aircraft in all configurations. The DINGO 2 is a consistent upgrade of the DINGO 1 all-protected carrier vehicle transport vehicle. The vehicle was introduced in the German armed forces in the year 2000 after proving its ability. DINGO 2 was introduced to replace the M113 fully tracked armored personnel carrier. Next to Germany it is also used by Austria, Belgium, Luxemburg and the Czech Republic.
