(NSI News Source Info) February 17, 2009: The Green Pine early warning radar systems made by the Elta subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries might be the winning system for the South Korean army at a cost of $214 million, according to the Korea Times.
The EL/M-2080 "Green Pine" Radar System, is a transportable ground-based, multimode solid state phased array radar. Incorporating ELTA's vast experience in surveillance and fire control radars and utilizing the company's state-of-the-art phased array technology, the "Green Pine" radar is designed to autonomously detect and simultaneously track dozens of Tactical Ballistic Missiles (TBMs) from long ranges, under all weather conditions and in the presence of undesired echoes. The modular, solid state, active array technology implemented in the radar, including multiple advanced transmit / receive modules, provides high redundancy, graceful degradation, high reliability and high availability. *Operational in the Israel Air Force, this advanced radar enhances the country's Air Defense System.
The radar component of Israel's Arrow anti-ballistic missile system can locate and track incoming missiles such as those in the North Korean arsenal over 500 kilometers. The systems will be delivered in 2010 and become operational in 2012.
The newspaper quoted an anonymous source in Korean's Defense Acquisition Procurement Agency as saying that the Green Pine is more suited for South Korea's defense needs in terms of both operations and cost than similar systems developed in other countries, such as the United States and France. South Korea wanted to test a US long-range radar system, which the US will not export, and rejected a lower quality system.
