Monday saw Elena Dementieva, seeded three, sweep aside her Spanish opponent Lourdes Dominguez Lino in straight sets 6:3, 6:2. Eighth-seed Nadia Petrova dropped the first set and had to battle to overcome Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld, a qualifier, in three sets 4:6, 7:6, 7:6.
