(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 27, 2014: Ramadan in 2014 is set to start tomorrow.
The Muslim holiday will begin on Saturday, June 28 and run through the evening of Monday, July 28, according to the Fiqh Council of North America.
The dates are based on astronomical calculation, using Makkah al-Mukarrama as a conventional point and takes the position that the conjunction must take place before sunset in Makkah and moon must set after sunset in Makkah.
The end of Ramadan is also known as the 1st of Shawwal.
Many Muslims fast during the daylight hours of Ramadan, which is a period of prayer, fasting, charity-giving, and self-accountability for Muslims.
It is said that the first verses of the Koran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad during the last third of Ramadan, making that portion an especially holy period.
Some Muslims work to read the entire Qur’an during the holiday, while most conduct acts of charity such as donating to the homeless or others in need.
