(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - December 10, 2013: The US government is under fire for allegedly misleading the Congress into buying Russian transport helicopters for US troops in Afghanistan.

 The Pentagon ordered 63 Russian Mi-17 rotorcrafts worth $1 billion over the past two years.

 According to the Associated Press, senior Pentagon officials have repeatedly assured members of Congress that the Department of Defense had made the right call, citing a top-secret 2010 study that named the Mi-17 as the superior choice.

 The report also states the Boeing Chinook was found to be “the most cost-effective single platform type fleet for the Afghan Air Force over a twenty-year” period.

 The 2010 study "specifically analyzed the opportunity for DOD to provide a U.S. alternative to the Mi-17 for Afghanistan," the report said, adding the Boeing helicopter is larger than its Russian counterpart, carries up to a 26,000 pound payload, which is twice as much as the Mi-17, and can operate at nearly the same high altitude.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 14, 2013: The pilot helmets for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter would be exclusively manufactured by Israel-based firm Elbit Systems and its US partner, Rockwell Collins. Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon's Joint Strike Fighter Program Office chose the Israeli firm to make the hi-tech helmets over BAE Systems.

The Associated Press reported that Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon announced the news on Sunday. Ya'alon said, "The choice of Elbit Systems to produce the pilots' helmets is a vote of confidence in Israel's defense industries and their people."

 According to news outlet New Hampshire Union Leader, London-based BAE Systems was hired by Lockheed and the Pentago to develop the helmet two years ago. This was after problems were seen on the Rockwell-Elbit helmet used for its pilot testing and training. However, Lockheed Spokeswoman Laura Siebert told Reuters that discontinuing BAE's work on the headpiece would allow the company to save USD 47 million. So far, Lockheed has already spent USD 57 million on the second helmet.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - November 20, 2010: The United States said Friday it was ready to provide "understandings in writing" after Israel requested written guarantees on incentives for a new freeze on West Bank settlements.

In talks last week, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton put together a package of incentives to get Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a fresh 90-day moratorium on new settlement building in a bid to get stalled peace talks with the Palestinians back on track.

But Netanyahu has baulked at bringing the deal to his security cabinet until he receives the pledges in writing.

US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters that "if there's a need to put certain understandings in writing, we will be prepared to do that."

It was the first time State Department officials, who have kept mum about the details of the ongoing Israeli-US discussions, have said President Barack Obama's administration is willing to put something in writing.

The US package of incentives is aimed at cajoling the Jewish state into imposing a new moratorium, opening the way for a return to the negotiating table.

Direct peace talks resumed on September 2 but collapsed three weeks later with the expiry of a 10-month Israeli ban on settlement building in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has since refused to rejoin the talks until a new moratorium is imposed.

David Hale, assistant to US Middle East envoy George Mitchell, briefed Abbas on details of the plan at a meeting earlier this week in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Ahead of the Abbas-Hale meeting, Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erakat said that for talks to resume, Israel would have to stop construction in all of the West Bank, including east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as the capital of their promised state.

Crowley said Hale was still in region, where he is due to meet Friday and Saturday with his counterparts from Jordan and Egypt, which co-sponsored the launch of peace talks in Washington in September.
