(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 19, 2013: Boeing [NYSE: BA] subcontractor, Air France Industries (AFI), has begun upgrading the electrical, mechanical and structural systems and mission hardware of the first of four French E-3F Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft. The $354M Mid Life Upgrade (MLU) – the largest ever for French AWACS – will provide the fleet a fuller picture of the battle space and more actionable information while reducing aircrew workload.

Boeing is providing on-site engineering and quality assurance support, software and hardware.
Work on the first E-3F AWACS aircraft at AFI’s facility near Paris is scheduled to be completed in 2014 with the rest of the fleet completed by 2016.
 "Air France Industries is uniquely positioned to help us provide this capability because of its substantial technical and manufacturing capabilities and over 20 years of experience with the E-3F fleet," said Steve Swanz, French AWACS program manager for Boeing. (NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - January 28, 2013: The Self-Defense Forces have been keeping around-the-clock surveillance over airspace around the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture, dispatching radar-equipped aircraft in a bid to prevent intrusions by Chinese airplanes.

Air Self-Defense Force aircraft were dispatched to Okinawa Prefecture after a Chinese airplane intruded into Japanese airspace on Dec. 13, when the ASDF failed to promptly scramble fighters as a ground radar in the area was unable to detect the low-flying plane.
On Jan. 15, the ASDF scrambled fighters to the Senkaku Islands after a propeller-driven airplane belonging to China's State Oceanic Administration flew about 120 kilometers north of Kubajima, one of the islets.
If the airplane had flown at 300 kph, it would have taken just 20 minutes or so to intrude into Japanese airspace at a distance of 22 kilometers from the island.

The Jan. 15 scramble was one of seven ordered by the ASDF since the airplane belonging to the Chinese agency intruded into Japanese airspace on Dec. 13. The other six occurred on Dec. 22, 24, 25 and 26, and on Jan. 5 and 11. Each time, Chinese aircraft came close to 100 kilometers of entering Japanese airspace.

The ASDF has scrambled fighters against Chinese aircraft in the East China Sea and its surrounding areas 160 times from April to December last year, already surpassing the 156 times recorded in fiscal 2011.

During such operations, China's airborne early warning planes and other kinds of military aircraft were often spotted, according to ASDF officials.

The ASDF deploys F-15 fighters from Naha Air Base, about 400 kilometers from the Senkaku Islands. The fighters first transmit a warning to Chinese aircraft in English to change course before swinging their main wings as a warning against entering Japanese airspace.

In the past, ASDF aircraft fired warning shots when a Soviet Union military plane flew over Okinawa Island in 1987. "We'll carefully examine" whether to take similar actions against Chinese aircraft, a senior Defense Ministry official said.

So far, the Chinese aircraft have always flown in from northwest of the Senkaku Islands before heading east and ultimately returning to the Chinese mainland.

"China is saying that it regularly patrols its own airspace [by dispatching its aircraft near the Senkaku Islands]," a senior ASDF official said. "To protect our airspace, it's necessary for us to detect approaching Chinese aircraft as quickly as possible."

Monitoring could strain crews
The radar facility closest to the Senkaku Islands is about 200 kilometers away on Miyakojima island, Okinawa Prefecture. However, the facility has difficulty detecting aircraft flying at low altitudes of several hundred meters due to the curvature of the Earth.
By contrast, there is no such blind spot around Hokkaido as it has six radar facilities on its coast that were originally built to prepare for any intrusion by Soviet aircraft.

In an attempt to prevent further intrusions by Chinese aircraft, the ASDF has decided to monitor the area around the Senkaku Islands around-the-clock by deploying four Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) planes from its Hamamatsu Air Base in Shizuoka Prefecture. Thirteen E2C early-warning surveillance airplanes from its Misawa Air Base in Aomori Prefecture have also been deployed.

However, dispatching surveillance airplanes alone is not enough if the ASDF wants to continually monitor the area, according to a former ASDF pilot.

"Aircraft monitoring missions require crew members to face the same strains drivers feel when they keep driving on frozen roads," he said.

Therefore, in the long run, it is necessary to improve the surveillance system for the Nansei Islands, which include the Senkaku Islands.

The Defense Ministry has been considering developing a new type of radar that can detect small aircraft at a distance, as well as sending F-15 fighters to Shimojishima Airport, about 200 kilometers from the Senkaku Islands.

"We'll do whatever we can," the senior Defense Ministry official said. He added that his colleague have also come up with an idea to examine a method developed in the United States that involves the use of a huge balloon equipped with a radar to monitor the situation from a high altitude.

ASDF becomes involved
Some Defense Ministry officials have expressed concerns that the dispute over the Senkaku Islands is now involving the ASDF.

Since Japan's nationalization of the islets in September, Haijian ships and other vessels belonging to China's State Oceanic Administration have repeatedly intruded into Japanese waters.

Japan Coast Guard patrol ships responded to the vessels, while Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers monitored waters from a distance rather than near the islets, in an effort not to incite conflict.

However, the ASDF is the only organization equipped with aircraft that can respond if Chinese aircraft intrude into Japanese airspace.

"Tensions have escalated as the ASDF has become involved [for surveillance over the Senkakus]," a senior Defense Ministry official said

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - March 5, 2012: The air force and the army are conducting an exercise across the eastern and northeastern states to test defences and special operations in the event of hostilities with China. This is the largest exercise of its kind.

“This time we are focused on the Brahmaputra Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Mizoram to exercise our entire capabilities in all roles in conjunction with the army to disrupt enemy intrusion and take the battle to the adversary,” Air Marshal M. Matheswaran, senior air staff officer of the Shillong-headquartered Eastern Air Command, told The Telegraph.

Codenamed “Pralay”, the exercise was designed by the Calcutta-headquartered Eastern Army Commander, Lt General Bikram Singh, and the Eastern Air Commander, Air Marshal S. Varthaman.

The exercise area is spread over the eight northeastern states and Bengal but action is mostly concentrated along the Brahmaputra Valley and Arunachal.

The air force has also deployed its assets from other commands to the east and northeast for the exercise, which is expected to conclude on March 3. “Pralay” began on February 29 but the mobilisation for it started on February 20.

More than 70 aircraft — including the airborne warning and control system (AWACS) planes, Sukhoi 30MKi, MiG-29, MiG-27 and Mirage 2000 combat planes — have been deployed.

This is the first time that the Israeli Phalcon AWACS are being tested in a simulated combat environment on such a scale. AWACS are designed to detect, acquire and designate targets for other fighter aircraft. Mid-air refuellers have also been deployed to practise long-range strike missions.

“Drills that will help us validate joint operational directives in the valleys and the hills are being emphasised,” Matheswaran said.

The air force spokesperson, Wing Commander Gerard Galway, said the eastern command holds an annual exercise. But the deployment of assets from the western and central air commands to the east shows that the scale this time is much larger.

The war-gamed scenario is of a short but intense conflict. Matheswaran said the AFNET — the air force’s own optic-fibre cable grid — was being used for voice, data and visual communication.

“This exercise is bringing out the net-centric capabilities that we are developing,” he said. The exercise would culminate by concentrating on a few unspecified areas in Assam and Arunachal.

The army’s 33, 3 and 4 Corps, headquartered in Sukna (north Bengal), Tezpur (Assam) and Rangapahar (Nagaland), are in the loop for the exercise. The 33 and 4 Corps have dual responsibilities for counter-insurgency and the China front.

In an unrelated exercise, platoons of the Indonesian and Indian armies are practising at the Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School in Vairante, Mizoram.

“Exercise Garuda Shakti” is the first joint platoon-level training programme for the two armies. In an outdoor drill named “Chakravyuh”, the platoons practised busting an insurgent hideout in Mizoram’s Lushai Hills early on Thursday after a nightlong march.

“They are very sincere, devoted, well-prepared and eager to learn,” the school’s commandant, Major General A.K. Sen, said of the Indonesian troops as they “slithered” from the Indian Air Force’s Mi-17 helicopters, flown from the Kumbhirgram airbase in Silchar, Assam.

The training and attack drills were coordinated in two mixed platoons (of around 30 soldiers each) of Kostrad (the Indonesian army’s strategic reserve command) and Indian infantry troops. The exercise ends tomorrow.

China talks

India and China today agreed to soon start a maritime cooperation dialogue to prevent incidents between their growing naval forces. The suggestion had come from the Chinese.

S.M. Krishna and Yang Jiechi met today for the first foreign minister-level annual dialogue, their discussions focusing on confidence-building measures and strengthening the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) forum.

In another first, the Chinese embassy here issued a detailed statement on Yang’s meetings with Krishna, Vice-President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Chinese mission generally avoids engaging with much of the Indian media, which Beijing believes to be biased against China.

However, it would seem Beijing has eventually recognised the importance of the media in shaping public perceptions of India-China ties. Foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin today said China had agreed to allow Zee TV to broadcast in China.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - November 15, 2011: India is close to purchase two additional Russian-Israeli airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft, the Times of India newspaper reported.
India ordered three A-50EI variants, developed on the basis of the Russian Il-76MD military transport plane and fitted with the Israeli-made Phalcon radar system, in 2004. They are already in service with the Indian air force (IAF).
The Times of India cited on Tuesday defense ministry sources as saying that an $800-mln draft contract “is now…in the final stages of being examined” before being signed as a follow-on order to the previous $1.1-bln contract.
According to the paper, India needs to strengthen its early-warning radar capability as the neighboring rival Pakistan has purchased at least four Swedish Saab-2000 AEW aircraft and is about to receive four Chinese ZDK-03 AWACS planes.
“The Phalcons significantly boost the effectiveness of both offensive and defensive operations. Their enhanced detection and interception capability, connected to fighters and surface-to-air missile systems, are tremendous force-multipliers,” the Times of India quoted an Indian military official.
In many aspects, the A-50 is comparable to the E-3 Sentry of the U.S. Air Force. It is fitted with an aerial refueling system and electronic warfare equipment, and can detect targets up to 400 km (250 miles) away.
India is also planning to integrate domestically developed AWACS systems into three Brazilian-made Embraer-145 aircraft to be later commissioned with the Indian Air Force. However, the completion of the project has been pushed back to 2014.

**Two countries aim to marry Israeli innovation with India’s vast manpower through trade and economic cooperation.
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 7, 2011: Israeli and Indian industry associations signed a memorandum of understating on recently aimed at spurring cross-border innovation and entrepreneurship, as the two countries add high technology to their growing network of trade and economic cooperation.
While bilateral trade has grown exponentially, the agreement between the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the country’s biggest trade association, and the Israel High Tech Industries Association, is unusual in that it focuses on technology. The Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, home to the up-and-coming software center of Hyderbad, is close to signing a pact with Israel’s Matimop, a government agency that facilitates multinational research and development ventures.

High tech is important to both countries, but their industries are very different. India is focused on software services -- writing code and operating systems for other companies. The National Association of Software & Services Cos (NASSCOM) forecasts will post exports of as much as $70 billion in the year to March 2012. The Israeli industry is much smaller but more diverse, and focuses on developing cutting-edge software, telecommunications and medicine. Exports in 2010 were about $29 billion.
Industry executives see potential to marry Israel’s innovative prowess with India’s huge and talented pool of human resources.
“There’s a complementary software story. Indian firms are entirely process orientated and Israel firms are much more about product,” Naushad Forbes, director of India’s Forbes Marshall and chairman of CII’s Innovation Council, told The Media Line. “If we put those two together, we can be unbeatable worldwide.”
Israel is trying to manage the shifting balance of world economic power. Countries like China and India post faster growth and present more intriguing markets than the older and slower economies of Europe and the US, which have been the biggest markets for Israel’s export-heavy economy. Closer trade and business ties also strengthens Israel’s political standing in the global community.
Starting at $200 million annually when diplomatic relations were established in 1992, trade between Israel and India ballooned to $4.7 billion mark last year when India vaulted into second place among Israel’s export markets. This does not include defense sales which are reportedly over $1 billion annually. In the first quarter of this year the level of trade plummeted to just $336 million, the Israel Export Institute reported on Wednesday, but industry figures and government officials are hopeful that growth will resume.
The two countries are negotiating a free-trade-area agreement (FTA) that will remove barriers to trade. In addition to the agreement with Andhra Pradesh, Israel is negotiating bilateral accords with two other Indian states. In March, Israel’s Finance and Industry Ministries allocated 100 million shekels ($29 million) to promote trade with China and India.
Much of the trade until now has been focused on defense, where increased arms spending has created a natural market for Israel military technology like unmanned pilotless vehicles (UPVs) and early airborne radar systems. These ties will likely deepen because of an Indian requirement that local components account for 30% of any contract, said Forbes. That will require Israeli companies to outsource or set up manufacturing in India.
Ties between Israeli and Indian technology companies are just starting, but they will likely involve more than sales. Companies will benefit mostly from combining Israeli innovation with India’s vast low-cost manpower.
“Israeli companies are already operating in India. We can learn from each other. There is a tremendous opportunity for collaboration and joint ventures,” Shri Sachin Pilot, the Indian minister of state for communications and information technology, said in Jerusalem.
In January 2009, India took delivery of the first of three Phalcon all-weather AWACS, also built by IAI, the flagship of Israel's defense industry, under a $1.1 billion deal. The radar system, produced by Israel's Elta Industries, is built around the Russian-built Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft. Delivery was advanced by two months following the carnage in Mumbai.
The Phalcons made India the first state in South Asia to have advanced multi-sensor AWACs capable of providing tactical surveillance or multiple airborne and surface targets and able to gather signals intelligence.
As part of the Phalcon deal, the Israelis disclosed they would establish five factories in India to produce artillery shells, a project reportedly worth $250 million.
Andhra Pradesh is already a high tech powerhouse, with software exports last year of $8 billion, equal to half the state’s total. But Ajay Misra, principal secretary to the state’s Information Technology and Communication Department, said India had ambitions to expand out of software into computer and telecommunications hardware. Israeli innovation could help, he said.
“That’s our next step,” he told The Media Line. “We’ve achieved a lot in the software and service sector, but in hardware we haven’t done anything on a big scale.”
In a taste of the kind of tie-ups that may be on the way, last Bangalore-based Tejas Networks, India's largest domestic telecom manufacturing company, is planning to acquire Ethos Networks, an Israel-based high-technology company specializing in carrier Ethernet and network-management products. Tejas now uses the Ethos team as an Israeli R&D center.
Steven Katz, a principal at the Israeli high technology investor, Vertex Venture Capital, said Israeli companies could also benefit from closer ties with India. But, he cautioned, managers will have to be careful about when and how they do it. It is critical that the most innovative parts of any new technology, where Israel’s comparative advantage lies, be developed at home.
“Once you [the company] get to a certain size and you need to build a new software module and you need 20 engineers, that’s when you can perform the development there,” Katz told The Media Line. “But the creativity and ingenuity should stay in Israel.”

(NSI News Source Info) KALAIKUNDA, India - November 4, 2010: The Indian Air Force (IAF) was going for a “composite upgradation” of its capabilities in the northeast, following which similar steps would be taken in the north, Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik said here on Tuesday.

“We are going for a composite upgradation of capabilities in the northeast. It should have been done a long time ago,” he said adding that infrastructure would be upgraded in about six major air fields.

The upgradation was a part of the Modernisation of Air Field Infrastructure (MAFI) project and included airfields in Bagdogra, Panagarh, Tezpur, Chabua, Saluwa and Guwahati. It also included improvement to eight advanced landing grounds in the region.

“After the northeast, we will concentrate in the north, so that both can take off at the same time,” he said adding that significant progress was made on ground and the project was being overseen by an empowered committee headed by the Vice-Chief of the IAF, Air Marshal P K Barbora.

On the development of the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), he said: “The LCA has taken a long way to come to the stage where it is now. By the middle of the next year LCA Mark-I will be inducted into the operationalised squadrons.”

Air Chief Marshal Naik was speaking to journalists during the India-U.K. joint air exercise, ‘Indradhanush,' that had been going on since October 18. Key attractions of the exercise are the Eurofighter-Typhoons, one of the six planes that have been shortlisted by the IAF for the Medium Multi-Role Combat (MMRC) aircraft deal earlier this year.

On the shortage of pilots, he said the IAF needed about 300 to 400 pilots, but more could not be taken in overnight.

“We have increased our intake capacity. By the time the equipment [new aircraft under the MMRC deal] arrive in three or four years, we will be ready to man them,” he said.

He said 50 Hawk aircraft were being procured from the U.K. that would be used for training of fighter pilots, a part of future co-operation between the two countries.

The next joint air exercise with the Royal Air Force (RAF) would probably be held in the U.K. after two years, he added.

Asked about the IAF's role in anti-Maoist operations, Air Chief Marshal Naik said four IAF helicopters had been engaged in the operations for the last six months in Dantewara and Jagdalpur areas.

In the third edition of the joint exercise with the RAF, the Air Force Chief himself flew in the newly acquired Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), the on-air radar system that was used in an exercise for the first time in India. His U.K. counterpart, Air Vice-Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, flew in a Su30 during the day.

“It was a great experience. As a pilot, I could see another way of operating an aircraft and capabilities,” Sir Dalton said.

The plane, Russian-made but packed with Israeli radar, is expected to reinforce India's maritime security following the attacks on Mumbai last year. Only a few non-Nato countries have Awacs and critics say it is a bad omen for the arms race in South Asia. India has ordered another two AWACS as it upgrades its military capabilities.
The Ilyushin-76 - which arrived in India on Monday - gives India the capability to track hundreds of aircraft and potential threats at sea and on the ground, at considerable distances. Air dominanceIndia is the first country in South Asia to own an Awacs (Airborne Warning and Control System) plane, popularly nicknamed the "eye in the sky".
The second and third aircraft are expected to be handed over next year. Analysts say the purchase, part of a 2004 deal involving India, Israel and Russia, is part of India's efforts to achieve air dominance over its rival, Pakistan.
Russia and Israel are India's two largest military suppliers. India's defence procurement is expected to rise to about $100bn over the next ten years. Delhi recently signed contracts with Israel for medium range surface-to-air missiles, and with Russia for the design and development of fighter aircraft.

DTN News: Indian Air Force IAF Chooses Boeing’s Latest C-17 For Heavy-Lift Transport Aircraft *Source: Defense Media / IANS (News upgraded to June 16, 2009) (NSI News Source Info) NEW DELHI, India - June 14, 2009: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has shortlisted the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III as its new Very Heavy Lift Transport Aircraft (VHTAC). Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik is quoted by the India Strategic defence magazine as saying that the aircraft had been chosen after a thorough study because of its capability to take off and land on short runways with heavy loads, long range, and ease of operation. IAF was looking at acquiring ten C-17s initially through the US government's Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route, and a proposal in this regard was being considered by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), he said adding that the aircraft should come in about three years after a contract is signed.The India selected C-17 as their primary heavy lift aircraft to replace aging Il-76. The new Indian Air Force chief Naik states that 10 C-17s are to be ordered; negotiations are underway. The air chief, who spoke to India Strategic on the eve of the Paris Air Show beginning Monday, is also quoted as saying in its report that flight trials for the six Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCAs) would begin in July and end around March 2010. The chosen MMRCA should start coming to India by 2014. Outlining the trial procedure, Air Chief Marshal Naik said that initially, test pilots from IAF's elite Bangalore-based Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) would visit the manufacturing facilities of the six contenders; in the second round, they would test the aircraft's performance in humid, hot and cold weather in Bangalore, Jaisalmer and Leh; and in the third and final round, they would test live precision weapon firings from the aircraft in the country of their manufacturer or another country designated by them. 'There would be one team leader but two or three sub-teams, and the template would be common for all,' he was quoted as saying. The six aircraft in the fray are European EADS Eurofighter, US Lockheed Martin F-16 Viper and Boeing F-18 Super Hornet, French Rafale, Swedish Gripen and Russian Mig 35. One of them would be chosen to supply 126 aircraft worth about $10 billion, but the order could go up by another 50 per cent to 189 aircraft, a clause for which is built in the tender (Request for Proposal or RfP) issued last year. The interview report has been published in the June edition of India Strategic, being released at the Paris Air Show. Notably, except for the Su30-MKI, all the combat and transport aircraft of the IAF were acquired in the 1980s, and IAF needs new, and newer generation, aircraft to replace and augment that capacity. India has about 100-plus medium An-32 and less than 20 heavy lift IL-76 aircraft. It is difficult to get their spares as the Soviet Union where they were made has disintegrated into Russia and other states. IAF has acquired old, refurbished IL-76 platforms for its AWACS and Midair Refueler requirements. An agreement was being signed with Ukraine to upgrade and modernize the An-32s, the Air Chief said. An IL-76 can carry a cargo of around 45 tonnes and has a crew of six while a C-17 can carry 70 tonnes, and is much easier to operate with a small crew of two pilots and one loadmaster (total three), thanks to its various power-assisted systems. Two observers though can also be seated. Despite its massive size - 174 ft length, 55 ft height and about 170 ft wingspan - a pilot can fly the C-17 with a simple joystick, much like a fighter aircraft, which can be lifesaving in a battlezone as the aircraft can take off quickly and at steep angles. It is powered by four Pratt & Whitney F-117-PW-100 turbofan engines. Air Chief Marshal Naik said that IAF required contemporary and futuristic aircraft and systems, and that there was an urgency to acquire modern aircraft. The government shared the concern of the armed forces, and the pace to renew IAF's assets was on schedule. By 2020-25, IAF would achieve its optimum level (of 45 squadrons). At present, it is down from its sanctioned strength of 39.5 squadron to around 30-32, but this trend has been arrested, particularly with the induction of more Su30-MKIs and Jaguars. India has given a repeat order of 40 Su30-MKIs to Russia to take their total number to 230. The requirement today is for technologically better, easier to maintain, and a larger number of combat and other aircraft, including helicopters, due to the strategic scenario around India and the need to ferry troops, men and material even within India in times of contingency and natural disasters. He observed: 'The IAF of the future, post-2025, would consist of FGFA (Fith Generation Fighter Aircraft), Su30-MKIs, MRCAs and Tejas/MCA (indigenous Medium Combat Aircraft) with multi-role as well as significant swing role capability.' 'They would employ advanced technologies, sensors and precision weapons. The larger aircraft, i.e. FGFA and Su30 would focus on Air Dominance and specialise in similar roles in long ranges over land and sea, while the MRCAs would don a variety of medium-range and tactical roles. These assets would be capable of all weather, day and night attack with adequate self-protection capability... these assets would be immensely capable and are not going to be confined to the strictly stereotyped roles. They would carry out a number of roles in the same mission.' Air Chief Marshal Naik, who assumed charge May 31 from Air Chief Marshal F.H. Major, would be visiting the Paris Air Show along with top IAF officers to witness what new technologies are being introduced and displayed there by various aircraft manufacturers. The Air Chief said that IAF was also looking at more AWACS but after studying how the first lot of three Phalcon AWACS functions. The first of these aircraft was delivered last month, and the remaining two would be delivered by Israel in 2010. He indicated that IAF had short-listed the Airbus A330 MRTT to augment its Midair Refueller requirement, and that the proposal was being processed by the Ministry of Defence. IAF already has six IL-76-based aerial refuellers, designated as IL-78. As for the C-17, Boeing has brought the aircraft several times to India for its literal catwalk on IAF tarmacs, including at the Aero India 2007 and 2009 in Bangalore. Indian military officials and journalists have been invited for the aircraft's flight displays during the Paris Air Show. The C-17 is the mainstay of the US forces for worldwide deployment, and can be refuelled midair. It is in fact the lifeline of US and NATO troops deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. According to the Boeing company, the high-wing, 4-engine, multi-service T-tailed military-transport C-17 can carry large equipment including tanks, supplies and troops directly to small airfields in harsh terrain anywhere in the world day or night. The massive, sturdy, long-haul aircraft tackles distance, destination and heavy, oversized payloads in unpredictable conditions. It has delivered cargo in every worldwide operation since the 1990s. It can take off from a 7,600-ft airfield, carry a payload of 160,000 pounds, fly 2,400 nautical miles, refuel while in flight for longer range, and land in 3,000 ft or less on a small unpaved or paved airfield day or night. In real life, Boeing C-17s never actually land on runways shorter than 5000 feet. If one read the last paragraph, it does not say that the C-17 can land on 3000 foot unpaved runways, but can "land in under 3000 feet" which is not the same thing.If the runways are wet, they need even more runway.Furthermore, that aircraft very heavy footprint, or Aircraft Classification Number (ACN) prevents it from being used on the majority of unpaved runways of the world, because the aircraft creates huge ruts in the runway when it lands.When PCN, runway length and condition of runway (water, snow etc) is taken into account, the C-17 is more restricted into the runways it can use than the Il-76 it is meant to replace.
