(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - March 31, 2012: Azerbaijan purchased a variety of weaponry, including aerial drones and an advanced anti-missile capable radar, from Israel under a $1.6 bln contract signed in 2011, the APA news agency said on Tuesday, citing data provided by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

According to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, Baku bought an unknown number of Gabriel anti-ship missiles, five Heron and five Searcher UAV’s, a Barak-8 air defense system with 75 missiles, and an EL/M-2080 Green Pine radar. Israel uses Green Pine for its national missile defense system.
Analitika.az website speculated that the purchases could be linked to a cooling in relations with Iran, after ties between Baku and Tehran deteriorated recently.
Last month, police in Azerbaijan said they had arrested an unspecified number of people linked to Iran and to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah on suspicion of planning attacks in the country.
Tehran later accused Azerbaijan, which borders Iran and has friendly relations with the United States and Israel, of colluding with Israeli intelligence services in the killing of an Iranian nuclear scientist in January.
At the end of February, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Tehran Javanshir Akhundov to explain the arms deal with Israel and to provide assurances that the Israeli weaponry would not be used against Iran.
Akhundov reportedly said the weapons were bought “to liberate occupied Azerbaijani land,” most likely hinting at the ongoing conflict with Armenia over the disputed region of Nagorny Karabakh which was seized from Azerbaijan by Armenian forces during a war in the 1990s.
Baku and Tehran attempted to soothe building tensions during a visit by Azerbaijan Defense Minister Safar Abiyev to Iran earlier in March when both sides made public assurances of good neighborly relations.
Israel has persistently denied any connection between current tensions in the Persian Gulf and military supplies to Azerbaijan. Israeli experts point out that such transactions take months, or even yearsto complete.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - November 15, 2011: The Israeli Air Force (IAF) plans to begin operating an unmanned intelligence-gathering aerial vehicle with the ability to launch missiles that could 'fly as far as Iran', a report says.
Manufacturing the Heron TP, which in Israel is often referred to as the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) “that can reach Iran,” began in 2010 by Israel Aerospace Industries, the Jerusalem Post reported on Monday.
The IAF's largest UAV can fly for up to 45 hours, carry 1,000 kg payload and has the ability to launch missiles.
Amid the West's standoff with Iran over its nuclear program, both Tel Aviv and Washington have repeatedly threatened Tehran with the "option" of a military strike.
During a visit to the US in 2010, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanded Washington launch a military attack against Tehran's nuclear program, saying that a “credible military threat by the United States is the only way to deter Iran.”
Netanyahu's call, however, was rejected by US Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
In May, a source close to prominent Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr said Israeli jet fighters had conducted drills at a military base in Iraq in order to strike targets inside Iran.
According to the report, a considerable number of Israeli warplanes, including F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22, and KC-10 jet fighters, were seen at al-Asad Airbase -- the second largest US military airbase in Iraq located in Anbar Province.
The report said that Iraqi officials had not been notified about the drills conducted in collaboration with the US military.
Iranian officials have stressed that any act of aggression by the US and Israel against Iran's nuclear facilities would meet a crushing response. They have repeatedly warned that any such measure could result in a war that would spread beyond the Middle East.
Iran is accusing Israel of running a covert campaign against its military and nuclear power (weapons, according to the UN) program. Iran has admitted that it is under attack by another powerful Internet weapon (similar to Stuxnet). Many Iranians are blaming Israel for the recent deaths of senior researchers and officials in the Iranian missile and nuclear programs. Israel says nothing.
Israel is speeding up equipping its airliners with anti-missile systems. The recent collapse of the Kaddafi dictatorship in Libya allowed several Libyan arms depots to be looted, and Israel believes arms smugglers have moved shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles to Gaza and sold them to Hamas (who would use them against Israeli aircraft). Military aircraft already have anti-missile defenses (which detect the launch of the missile, then blind its guidance system with a laser.)
Israeli forces are becoming more successful in detecting and attacking Islamic terrorists in northern Gaza while rockets are moved and set up for firing. The use of UAVs and constant helicopter and aircraft patrols, plus intel on terrorist plans, has made it more dangerous to launch rockets.
In Gaza, Hamas is enjoying a jump in popularity because of the recent prisoner exchange (one Israeli soldier for over a thousand Palestinians), but there have also been more calls in Gaza for Hamas to release some of the hundreds of political prisoners it holds. Those who openly oppose Hamas in Gaza end up in jail, or worse. Hamas has been declining in popularity over the last few years, and is believed that it would lose another election. For that reason, Hamas has no plans to allow any more elections until it can get its poll numbers up.
November 8, 2011: The UN released a report accusing Iran of developing nuclear weapons. This is the first time the UN went that far. Israel has long been expected to attack Iran (as they did Iraq and Syria) if they felt their foe was getting too close to having nuclear weapons. But Israel refused to respond to the report.
November 6, 2011: Over the last few days, Israeli government websites have been attacked, and some were unavailable for hours. This was believed to be retaliation for recent attacks on Palestinian web sites. There was also leftist anger at the Israeli seizure of two ships that tried to break the Gaza blockade.
November 5, 2011: Israeli warplanes attacked Islamic terrorists in Gaza, in retaliation for rocket attacks on Israel.
November 3, 2011: Israeli warplanes attacked Islamic terrorists in Gaza, in retaliation for sniper attacks on Israeli troops along the border.
November 2, 2011: Israel test fired another of its Jericho 3 ballistic missiles (with a range of up to 5,000 kilometers).
November 1, 2011: The Israeli government has told its armed forces commanders to do whatever is necessary to halt the rockets being fired from Gaza into southern Israel. This would include another ground offensive. This order was given largely because the Islamic terrorists in Gaza are using longer range (up to 20 kilometers) rockets that can hit a larger number of more thickly populated areas.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - July 26, 2011: Israel Aerospace Industries continues to fortify its presence in Europe after it beat out an American bid to sell strategic unmanned aerial vehicles to the French military.
Last week, the French Defense Ministry announced its decision to purchase IAI’s Heron TP long-endurance UAV that entered the Israel Air Force service in 2010. The Heron TP will replace the smaller Heron 1, which has been in French service for a number of years.
IAI, together with France’s Dassault, beat out a bid from America’s General Atomics Aeronautical Systems which offered a version of the Predator B UAV, a vehicle that has been used extensively in Afghanistan and Pakistan in recent years.
This will be the first export deal of the Heron TP, Israel’s largest UAV. IAI, which declined to comment on the deal, will manufacture the aircraft frame in Israel and assembly will be completed by Dassault in France.
The deal is estimated to reach close to $500 million over a number of years and could lead to additional contracts for IAI as other countries, such as Germany, seek to upgrade their UAV capabilities.
Selection of the Heron TP was announced on Friday following a meeting by France’s Ministerial Committee for Investment. The French Defense Ministry will now open negotiations with Dassault to finalize the deal.
The Heron TP is the largest UAV in the Israel Air Force service. It has a 26 meter long wingspan - the size of a Boeing 737 - and can stay airborne for up to 45 hours. It can carry 1,000 kg. in payloads, making it capable of conducting a wide variety of missions. According to foreign reports, it has the ability to also launch missiles and in Israel it is often referred to as the UAV “that can reach Iran.”
France is expected to use the Heron TP in military operations throughout the world such as in Afghanistan, where five NATO member countries are already operating UAVs manufactured in Israel.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - August 5, 2010: The Australian Heron Unmanned Aerial Vehicle is a key asset in the conduct of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions in the Afghanistan theatre of operations. The vehicles are flown by a small contingent of Royal Australian Air Force, and Australian Army personnel from the coalition airbase at Kandahar. They have been operating in theatre since July 2009 Heron missions principally support Australian efforts on the ground by providing intelligence information on insurgent activities directly to commanders in the tactical situation. Heron have the capacity to carry a number of capabilities on any single mission and can therefore provide a versatile array of information depending on the requirements of the customer. They are operated from a ground base control by trained pilots and can withstand a range of weather conditions. Heron is a medium altitude asset that is designed to compliment the other reconnaissance assets in theatre. Information is analysed and processed in real time. The commander has the benefit of not only having eyes and ears on a target but also a wide range of specialist imaging and sensory information to build a more accurate picture of the battlespace.

Israel has trained the Turkish personnel who will operate the drones and first tests were also conducted, Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul told reporters at parliament on Thursday. The long-delayed delivery of the Israeli-made surveillance drones followed Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak's fence-mending trip to Turkey in January. In 2005, Turkey signed a contract with Israel to purchase 10 Heron unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) worth more than $180 million from Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Elbit Systems, Ltd. Heron drone, capable of flying at an altitude of 30,000 feet for 30 hours, has been estimated by foreign experts to have a maximum operating range of 3,300 kilometers (2,000 miles). Turkey, one of the few Middle East states that has maintained diplomatic ties with Israel, remains a voiced critic of Tel Aviv's actions against the Palestinian nation, including the closure of al-Aqsa Mosque to Palestinians, the siege of Gaza, and the weeks-long offensive in the coastal sliver that left over 1,400 Gazans killed.

In the US, two companies, Northrop Grumman and General Atomics, dominate the production of the UAVs, while in Israel, the most prominent company for producing world-class pilotless machines is Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). There are two main UAVs in great demand – the Heron and the Reaper. Produced by Israel and the United States, respectively, these UAVs are able to be in one country with their control team in another, allowing the UAV to fly over Iraq and Afghanistan while being controlled by ground forces in the home nation. It can carry out surveillance at an altitude of 50,000ft and its strength lies in better intelligence, target acquisition and reconnaissance capabilities (ISTAR). In size, the Reaper is similar to a small business jet and can carry 14 Hellfire missiles. The cost of the craft and associated ground stations is $100m a system. Each Reaper drone is operated remotely by two people, a pilot and a sensor operator that are positioned at a ground control station. The pilot flies the plane, while the sensor operator monitors the performance of various sensor systems used by the Reaper. Extra competitors Also making its mark on the UAV field is the Predator (MQ-1), which is produced by General Atomics (GA) and comprises four sensored air vehicles, a ground control station and a satellite link. Like the Avenger it also flies at 60,000ft and the RQ-4A variant has the distinction of being the first to fly non-stop from the US to Australia. Euro Hawk, a European Version of the US Global Hawk UAV, is being developed for Germany by the European Aeronautic Defence and Space company (EADS) and Northrop Grumman to replace its aging fleet of Atlantique ATL1 aircraft. It is equipped with an EADS-built SIGINT mission system that will be the heart of the Euro Hawk's intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance system. It has an endurance of 30 hours. Around the world France has developed a competitor for the US Predator. Its EADS SIDM is actually a modified version of the Israeli Eagle. SIDM can stay in the air for up to 24 hours, at an altitude of up to 30,000ft and has a total payload capacity of 600lb. France-based Aeroart has unveiled a very-low-cost micro UAV known as Featherlite. The entire system, including control, visual systems and an on-board video camera, costs only $11,400. This model is powered by an electric engine, is 1.2m long with a wingspan of 1.9m, weighs just 1.5kg and can carry a 250g payload for an hour and a half. It is used for training UAV pilots and for conducting surveillance or taking photographs. Rather than going into the space alone Pakistan and Italy have teamed up to produce the Falco, an advanced tactical UAV. It is being produced by Selex Galileo with Pakistan manufacturing many parts of it and is due to roll out shortly. Meanwhile, back in the US, the innovation just keeps on coming, with the nation developing a bomber that will be flown by ground personnel. "UAVs are expected to change the total scenario of future warfare."Wherever in the world they are being produced, UAVs are expected to change the total scenario of future warfare. Predictions are that human pilots will soon be obsolete and with the introduction of UAVs, the risk to pilot life and costly air to air combats will be eliminated. It's a game of innovation in technology; with whoever possesses the state-of-the-art model, with better lethal power, likely to prove the eventual winner. As prior intelligence is a force multiplier in any warfare scenario, the UAVs will provide such intelligence to the theatre commander and enable him take action with confidence. Israel Aerospace Industries said Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 that it will supply unmanned spy planes to Germany that will see action in Afghanistan early next year. The Heron drones will be deployed by the German air force in northern Afghanistan in early 2010 for reconnaissance missions, the company said in a statement. It would not reveal how many drones were sold or for how much but said it was a multimillion dollar deal. Germany's Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement confirmed it had signed an agreement to purchase the aircraft. Israeli drones have previously been supplied to coalition forces to gather intelligence data on Islamic militants in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Heron is Israel's largest surveillance drone, with a 54-foot wingspan and an ability to fly for as long as 30 hours at a time at a speed of 140 mph (225.3 kph) and a height of 30,000 feet (9,144 meters).

Predictions are that human pilots will soon be obsolete and with the introduction of UAVs, the risk to pilot life and costly air to air combats will be eliminated. UAVs are being used to monitor the border to check infiltration, identifying and attacking those who plant roadside IEDs and locating and killing the most wanted terrorists. It's a game of innovation in technology; with whoever possesses the state-of-the-art model, with better lethal power, likely to prove the eventual winner. As prior intelligence is a force multiplier in any warfare scenario, the UAVs will provide such intelligence to the theatre commander and enable him take action with confidence. Efforts are now in hand to build solar-powered UAVs which will bring a revolution in this field. In short, it could be said that the UAVs are the mainstay of the future warfare.

(NSI News Source Info) Bangalore - February 16, 2009:Israeli defence firms went all out to woo India, one of its biggest customers, at the Aero India Show here and Indian Army chief General Deepak Kapoor spent considerable time at the huge pavilion, checking out some of the latest weaponry. Israel's pavilion at the seventh edition of the Feb 11-15 Aero-India 2009 international air show was one the biggest shows and evoked a lot of interest.

The 7th Aero India, organised by the ministry of defence, showcases the latest in the field of military and civil aircrafts. The show runs from February 11 to 15. The Israeli pavilion even screened a bhangra pop number shot in Hindi-film style to attract Indian buyers. Israel's Rafael Advanced Defence Systems put up big screens showing Israeli artists wearing lehanga-choli and dancing to bhangra beats. An Indian defence ministry official told IANS: "Last year, an Indian delegation led by Defence Secretary Vijay Singh had gone to Israel for talks to bolster the strategic ties between the two countries. And this year Israel has got one of the biggest pavilions at the Aero India. This signifies that the ties between the two countries will strengthen in the years to come." India is Israel's biggest customer for weapons and has a longstanding relationship with Tel Aviv despite geopolitical sensitivities and allegations of kickbacks in defence deals. Since the 1999 Kargil conflict India has bought military hardware and software from Israel worth around $8 billion. General Deepak Kapoor, accompanied by two top army officers, spent considerable time at the pavilion set up by the Israeli heavy munitions and missiles manufacturing industry. Kapoor checked out Israel's Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, especially its short range and medium range missiles on simulators. He "blew up" an enemy tank using the short range "Spike" missile. Kapoor also visited the pavilion set up by the Elbit system. The system specialises in the manufacture of defence airborne systems, unmanned vehicles and combat vehicle systems. In 2004, India ordered three Phalcon Airborne Early Warning radar systems from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), fitted on Russian-built Ilyushin II-76 aircraft. Israel has also sold IAI Malat-built Searcher MkII and IAI Heron unmanned aerial vehicles to the Indian Air Force. The IAI recently upgraded 32 Hind Mi-24 helicopters for the Indian Army. Currently, Rafael is a major company vying for a $10-billion contract for the supply of 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft to the Indian Air Force. In 2008, Rafael won the Indian order for low-level quick reaction missile system (LLQRM), which was competing with the mobile SPYDER (Surface-to-air Python and Derby) short-range air defence system. The company is now competing for India's quick reaction missile (QRM) and medium range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM) order with the SPYDER-SR (short-range) and SPYDER-MR (medium-range) missile systems.

(NSI News Source Info) January 28, 2009: After four years of testing and development, Israel is replacing manned maritime aircraft, which patrol along its coast, with UAVs. The current patrol force consists of three Seascan aircraft, which are modified versions of the Israeli made Westwind executive jet.
This ten ton aircraft has a seven man crew and is equipped with a search radar, and can carry missiles. The Seascan has an endurance of six hours, and has been used for maritime reconnaissance for over thirty years. The Heron or Machatz-1 is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle developed by the Malat (UAV) division of Israel Aircraft Industries. It is capable of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) operations of up to 52 hours' duration at up to 35,000 feet. It has demonstrated 52 hours of continuous flight, but the effective operational maximal flight duration is less, due to payload and flight profile. There is a new version, Heron TP, also known as Eitan (UCAV). On September 11, 2005 it was announced that the Israel Defence Forces purchased US$50 million worth of Heron systems. The IDF's designation of the Heron is Machatz-1. Apart from Israel, the countries which operate the Heron are India and Turkey. France operates a derivative of Heron named Eagle. In 2008, Canada leased a Heron for use in Afghanistan. As of 2009, they have been deployed in the region. List of Heron operators: Israeli Defence Force - 1+ , Canadian Forces = 1+ , Indian Air Force - 50 Heron I, ? Heron II , Turkish Air Force - 10 & French Air Force - 1+ . The 1.1 ton Heron UAV, which enters service this year, can stay in the air for 30 hours or more, and has a payload of 500 pounds. This can include a search radar. Using the Heron, instead of the Seascan, will save a lot of money, and provide better coverage. The Seascan aircraft are about at the end of their useful lives. It was four years ago that Israel first began using some UAVs for maritime patrol. The United States has also been experimenting with this, as it is pretty clear that UAVs are ideal for this job. Maritime patrol consists of many hours in the air looking for whatever among not much. Boring as hell for humans, but ideal work for robots. While the U.S. is experimenting with the large, and expensive, Global Hawk, Israel (which really only has to worry about coastal patrols) is using a new version of the old, reliable, Heron, called the Mahatz I. One thing that makes UAVs for maritime patrol possible, or at least practical, is cheaper and more capable sensors. In the case of the Mahatz I, the radar used (synthetic aperture radar), works with onboard software to provide automatic detection, classification and tracking of what is down there. Human operators ashore, or on a ship or in an aircraft, are alerted if they want to double check using video cameras on the UAV. Also carried are sensors that track the sea state (how choppy it is). For this kind of work, one of the most important things is reliability. While the Heron/ Mahatz I is a bit smaller (at 1.2 tons) than the Predator, it is still pretty expensive (over $5 million each.) You don't want to lose them over open water. What the Israeli navy will be doing is finding out just how reliable the Mahatz I is when doing a lot of maritime patrol.
