Indonesia's air force has obtained two used Boeing 737-400s from the nation's flag carrier Garuda.

The two aircraft will be used for VIP and troop transport missions, says Garuda. They will not be modified from their current configuration.

A memorandum of understanding for the deal was signed last November, with the aircraft handed over in early March. The carrier declines to reveal how much the air force paid for the twinjets.

Maintenance of the aircraft will be the responsibility of both Garuda and the air force. Flightglobal's ACAS database records that Garuda's six wholly owned 737-400s were delivered in 1993 and have an average of around 43,000h of flying time each.

The Indonesian air force is working to upgrade its airlift capability. In January, Annapolis-based Arinc Engineering Services won a $63.7 million contract to modernise five Indonesian air force Lockheed Martin C-130B transports.

(NSI News Source Info) SEATTLE, - January 26, 2011: Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Alaska Airlines yesterday (Jan. 25, 2011) announced an order for 15 Next-Generation 737 airplanes, comprised of 13 737-900ERs (extended range) and two 737-800s. The 737-900ER is a new model for the Alaska Airlines fleet. The contract, which includes exercised options previously placed by Alaska, is valued at $1.3 billion at list prices.

The largest and newest model in the 737 family, the 737-900ER can carry up to 26 more passengers or fly about 500 nautical miles (926 km) farther than the 737-900. The longer range of the 737-900ER will connect distant city pairs across continents, such as Seattle to Orlando, Fla., in a generous two-class configuration. It has substantial economic advantages over competing models, including six percent lower operating costs per trip and four percent lower operating costs per seat mile. Alaska Airlines plans to operate the 737-900ER in a two-class configuration with 178 to 184 seats.

"The reliability and efficiency of our 737 fleet has been a direct contributor to our strong financial performance," said Brad Tilden, president of Alaska Airlines. "The 737-900ER will be a perfect fit for our transcontinental, high traffic west coast and mid-continental markets and will be the most fuel efficient airplane in our fleet. The Next-Generation 737s will add capability to Alaska Airlines' fleet of 114 737s currently serving 61 destinations in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

(NSI News Source Info) SEATTLE, - July 2, 2010: Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of Lion Air, Boeing (NYSE: BA) today delivered two Next-Generation 737-900ERs (extended range) to the Jakarta-based carrier. Lion Air, which operates an all-Boeing fleet, was the launch customer of the 737-900ER and is currently the largest operator of the airplane.

With today's deliveries, the Lion Air fleet consists of 36 737-900ERs and two 747-400s. In addition, Lion Air is a launch customer for the new 737 Boeing Sky Interior. Lion Air plans to carry 20 million passengers this year to destinations within Indonesia as well as to Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia. The carrier is based at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The planned rate increase is aimed at satisfying continued strong demand for the Next-Generation 737. In addition, the company continues to study further potential 737 rate increases, given continued customer demand. "With over 5,200 sold to date, the Next-Generation 737 is the workhorse in our customers' fleets around the world," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Jim Albaugh. "Even through the global economic downturn, our diverse 737 backlog has remained very strong. Increasing the 737 production rate is the right thing to do to meet the growth and fleet replacement needs of our customers." The current production rate on the 737 program is 31.5 airplanes per month. Suppliers for the 737 program are prepared to support the rate increase. The production rate decision is not expected to have a material impact on 2010 financial results. Training began on Feb. 15 with five Boeing Defence Australia instructors and 32 students from the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) No. 2 Squadron. The 147-day program, held in the AEW&C Support Centre at RAAF Base Williamtown, is a combination of classroom- and computer-based lessons, Operational Flight Trainer (OFT) simulator sessions, and "real life" flight line training. "Realistic, integrated training is essential to mission readiness, and our Wedgetail 737 AEW&C training programs are designed to mirror the way RAAF personnel are expected to perform maintenance activities in the field," said Grant Drew, an AEW&C maintenance instructor for Boeing Defence Australia. The AEW&C Support Centre, established in 2004 under the Project Wedgetail System Acquisition Contract (SAC), houses the OFT, an Operational Mission Simulator and a Mission Support System to support Australia's six 737 AEW&C aircraft. ISS training follows a series of basic maintenance training courses delivered under the Project Wedgetail SAC. The tests were conducted in September and October off the Washington coast and over Puget Sound, Wash.The Boeing Company announced yesterday Nov. 9, that it has successfully completed tests of the Counter Measures Dispenser System for Project Wedgetail, Australia's Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system. Completion of CMDS testing is a key step toward verification of the Wedgetail AEW&C aircraft's overall Electronic Warfare Self-Protection (EWSP) capability. EWSP is designed to warn aircrews about and protect against missiles targeting the aircraft. The CMDS responds to threats by releasing chaff and flares to decoy incoming missiles away from the aircraft. Boeing and its industry supplier, BAE Systems, developed and integrated the CMDS system. Testing included 19 flights that dispensed more than 500 units of chaff and flares. The AEW&C team collected data via five high-speed video cameras mounted on the Wedgetail aircraft and an additional video camera attached to a T-33 chase plane. "The testing program verified that the Boeing-installed self-protection system will effectively counter its intended threats reliably and safely," said Kermit Hollinger, Electronic Warfare manager for Boeing AEW&C Programs. "This milestone is the latest example of Boeing's ability to integrate military systems onto commercial aircraft and provide our customers with low-risk, cost-effective solutions to their operational requirements."
