DTN News: Schiebel ~ Maker Of Camcopter S-100 UAVs Hovers Over New UAE Deals Source: DTN News / Int'l Media (NSI News Source Info) DUBAI, UAE - April 21, 2010: Schiebel, the Austrian defence company, is seeking more contracts in the Middle East for its unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) after nearing the end of deliveries on its 60-aircraft deal with the UAE Armed Forces. The focus comes as military and national security planners around the world shift to unmanned systems to lower costs and expand coverage of aerial reconnaissance activities to include critical assets such as power plants, oil and gas pipelines and refineries. “There is a great deal of interest from a number of countries in the region – a couple are in the critical phases now, while others are in the early marketing phases,” said Neil Hunter, the managing director for sales and strategy for Schiebel. The Vienna-based company, which also produces mine detectors, said the UAE was its first major contract and proved its products were able to withstand the hot and high-altitude conditions of the Middle East. Schiebel has delivered 56 of 60 Camcopter S-100 UAVs to the Emirates, according to Wolfgang Steigberger, the regional sales manager at Schiebel. The company declined to give a cost for the aircraft but said it was 10 times cheaper than another well-known UAV, Northrop Grumman’s Fire Scout, which the military data provider Deagel.com says costs about US$15 million (Dh55m). Together, the two products have helped gain acceptance for helicopter-based UAVs, Mr Hunter said. “There has been a lot of scepticism and disbelief when it comes to unmanned helicopters but the likes of us and Northrop Grumman have proved they have a lot to offer.” Schiebel has formed a partnership with Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Investments to customise the platform with specific payload and operational characteristics into a system called Al Sber. There has been a significant growth of UAVs in active military theatres, Mr Hunter said. “There is a shift in emphasis to unmanned systems because they do the dull, the dangerous and the dirty tasks that you can avoid being done by humans,” he said. The US, which has the largest military budget in the world, said its army would move to operating mostly unmanned aircraft over the next 25 years. But Schiebel said civilian sector opportunities could be even larger. “This area is probably going to see the fastest growth before any of the other sectors,” Mr Hunter said. The rise of border protection agencies is likely to increase the civilian market. One could be the UAE’s Critical National Infrastructure Authority, which is tasked with protecting more than 24 facilities across the country and recently signed for 34 interceptor boats to protect offshore oil and gas installations. While the initial UAV contract with the Emirates is nearing its conclusion, Schiebel is optimistic it may lead to other opportunities, including a logistics, training and sustainment contract for the 60 aircraft, which have a lifespan of 15 years.

LOUIS, - December 17, 2009: Boeing [NYSE: BA] Dec. 16, 2009 announced that it has completed a demonstration for the U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) at Fort Bragg, N.C., that integrated both air and ground unmanned systems to perform psychological operations (PSYOP) wartime missions for combatant commands. The USASOC and a Boeing-led contractor team conducted the demonstration in November, using the Schiebel S-100 Unmanned Aerial System and the John Deere R-Gator Unmanned Ground Vehicle to demonstrate an electro-optical/infrared, audio, and leaflet drop mission. "Working with USASOC, we were able to pull together a team to demonstrate this integrated, multimodal operation in just 45 days," said Vic Sweberg, director of Boeing Unmanned Airborne Systems. "We brought together hardware and software from five different contractors into a single multimodal system that allowed the control of different unmanned systems capabilities to accomplish a particular mission." "This is an example of how Boeing unmanned operational services and contractor logistics support capabilities can support USASOC warfighters today," said Greg Deiter, vice president of Boeing Defense & Government Services. "We are working together with USASOC to support its need for quick-insertion capabilities in the multimodal unmanned operations world." The Boeing Unmanned Airborne Systems division includes the A160T Hummingbird, ScanEagle, SolarEagle, and MQ-X. Boeing also has teams deployed with U.S. Navy ships and ground forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps, Army, and Special Operations Command operations in a variety of roles and services.

(NSI News Source Info) WASHINGTON, USA - August 12, 2009: The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and Schiebel Industries AG of Austria yesterday Aug 11, announced they have signed a teaming agreement to pursue marketing and support opportunities for Schiebel's S-100 CAMCOPTER. The S-100 is a compact unmanned aerial vehicle that provides a platform for a wide variety of payloads, including a stabilized video system for surveillance and reconnaissance. The Aerial Vehicle (AV) combines long endurance and large payload capacity into a relatively small outline. The AV can complete its entire mission automatically, from takeoff to landing, controlled by a triple-redundant flight computer based on proven flight control methods and algorithms. Redundant INS and GPS modules ensure precision navigation and stability in all phases of flight, ensuring that the payload is accurately positioned in accordance with its tasking. The onboard navigation computer is capable of storing and managing all waypoint commands, allowing continuous operation independent of the control station. The datalink receives control inputs from, and transmits position and payload data to, the control station in real-time. Mission radius is dependent upon the user-specified ground antenna configuration, and payload weight. CAMCOPTER® S-100 has been designed as a platform for a wide variety of payloads, and therefore no standard payload is offered, rather they are integrated according to customer requirements. The AV features two payload bays, side hard points and an internal auxiliary electronics/avionics bay. The primary payload bay, located directly beneath the main rotor shaft, is capable of mounting payloads weighing up to 50 kg (100 lbs.).Fixed-mounted daylight and/or infrared cameras provide the operator with situational awareness and orientation. The AV fuselage is a carbon-fibre monocoque, which gives a superior strength/weight ratio, providing maximum capacity for a wide range of payload/endurance combinations. In a standard configuration, the AV is capable of carrying a 25 kg (55 lbs) payload for up to 6 hours. The AV is powered by an aviation-certified rotary engine. The S-100 is also being developed for maritime applications, where, like its predecessor, it will be capable of landing on helicopter deck-equipped ships without the use of additional landing equipment. "This teaming agreement allows us to offer another quality unmanned airborne platform to customers who depend on the intelligence these aircraft can provide," said Vic Sweberg, director of Boeing Unmanned Airborne Systems (UAS). "It will further enable our new division to deliver innovative solutions tailored to our customers' needs and budgets." Boeing's UAS division includes the A160T Hummingbird, ScanEagle, SolarEagle and MQ-X. The S-100 is an autonomous helicopter that uses vertical takeoff and landing technology. The aircraft can be programmed to fly autonomous missions via a point-and-click computer software interface, or be directed manually with a joystick. It also can operate under adverse weather conditions and beyond line-of-sight on land and at sea. Its data link range extends up to 200 km, with a service ceiling of 18,000 feet.
