DTN News - AIRLINES NEWS: Airbus A350 Makes Maiden Test Flight

DTN News - AIRLINES NEWS: Airbus A350 Makes Maiden Test Flight
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by Roger Smith from reliable sources BBC News
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 14, 2013: The newest aircraft from European planemaker Airbus has taken off on its maiden test flight.

The Airbus A350 is designed to be more fuel-efficient, and a direct competitor to US rival Boeing's 787 Dreamliner.

It is seen as vital to the future of Airbus, which competes with Boeing to supply the majority of the world's airlines with new planes.
It took off from Blagnac airstrip in the French city of Toulouse, where the A350 is assembled, on Friday morning.
The plane will take a short trip to carry out tests, and then land back at Toulouse again.
Boeing's Dreamliner has proved popular since its first flight in 2009, despite recently being grounded by regulators over safety fears relating to its batteries.
Major milestone
Airlines are being squeezed by high fuel costs and falling passenger numbers, and are looking for more fuel-efficient aircraft.
Airbus claims the A350, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, will use about 25% less fuel than previous generation wide-bodied aircraft.
Like the Dreamliner, the A350 is made largely of advanced materials, particularly carbon composites, in order to save weight.
Airbus has already taken more than 600 orders for the new plane, whereas there have been 890 Dreamliner orders so far.
The company hopes to start delivering the first A350s to customers by the end of 2014.
Analysts say a successful test flight would be a major milestone for Airbus in the A350 project, with major aircraft manufacturing projects frequently beset by delays.
"All recent programmes before it, both by Airbus, Boeing and others, have had reasonably horrendous technical problems and delays," said Nick Cunningham, an aviation analyst at the London-based Agency Partners, speaking to French agency AFP.
"So every time you hit a milestone (such as a test flight), it's good news because it means that you've missed an opportunity to have another big delay."
The plane's wings were designed at an Airbus facility in Filton near Bristol, and are manufactured at Broughton in Wales.
The Airbus A350 XWB is a family of long-range, two-engined wide-body jet airliners under development by European aircraft manufacturer Airbus. The A350 will be the first Airbus with both fuselage and wing structures made primarily of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer. It will carry 250 to 350 passengers in three-class seating, depending on variant.
The A350 was originally conceived in 2004 as a largely new design, but with a fuselage based on the A330. This was rejected by some prospective customers. The 2006 redesigned A350 was named by Airbus as the A350 XWB, where the XWB is an acronym extra wide body. Airbus stated that it will be more fuel-efficient and have operating costs up to 8% lower than the Boeing 787.
The launch customer for the A350 is Qatar Airways, which ordered 80 aircraft across the three variants. Development costs are projected to be €12 billion (US$15 billion or £10 billion). The airliner is scheduled to enter airline service in mid-2014. As of February 2013, 617 aircraft have been ordered.

DTN News - CHINA DEFENSE NEWS: Embarrassment For PLA As Photos of Fatal Military Air Crash Emerge On Weibo

DTN News - CHINA DEFENSE NEWS: Embarrassment For PLA As Photos of Fatal Military Air Crash Emerge On Weibo

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 2, 2013: China’s military on Monday confirmed two pilots had died in a military plane crash over the weekend – but only after pictures and a video appeared on the internet.

The People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) said a Sukhoi Su-27 fighter plane crashed on mudflats in Rongcheng city, Shandong province, during a drill, on Sunday afternoon, according to Xinhua.

Photographs and a video clip of the crash site were uploaded onto microblogging platform Sina Weibo on Sunday afternoon and quickly went viral.
One photograph showed the wreckage of the aircraft engulfed in flames and black smoke, while another showed fishermen trying to approach the crash site.
In a video clip circulated online, an onlooker said the plane "floated" in the air for a while before it crashed to the ground and caught fire.
According to Xinhua, the two pilots died in the accident. There were no reported casualties or damage to property among local residents.
The pilots had ejected from the plane before the crash but it was not known why they died, the Global Times reported.

The twin-engine, Russian-made, Soviet-era fighter aircraft was introduced to China's military in the 1990s. The PLAAF now has about 300 Su-27s in different versions.
The Su-27 fighters have given the Chinese air force "strong capabilities in both long-range air combat and dog-fights", the Global Times quoted a military expert as saying.
The last known crash of the same type of aircraft in China took place in early 2009 when a Su-27 crashed into a mountain in Chongqing after reportedly experiencing “a series of explosions”, according to a BBC report.
In 2002, a Ukrainian Su-27 fighter lost control during an aerial acrobatics show and crashed into an audience stand, killing 83.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 13, 2011: Defected Officer Speaks Of Fighting In Gaddafi's Army

Fighters in the Libyan rebel enclave of Misrata have been continuing efforts to try to break out of the port through army lines.

They believe the end of Colonel Gaddafi's regime is closer.

As well as controlling the eastern third of Libya and more of the port of Misrata, rebel forces said they have taken parts of the coastal oil centre of Zawiya just beyond Tripoli.

Control of the city also would cut one of Muammar Gaddafi's last supply routes from Tunisia.

DTN News - OSAMA BIN LADEN NEWS: Obama Will Not Hesitate To Repeat Osama Raid, If Required

DTN News - OSAMA BIN LADEN NEWS: Obama Will Not Hesitate To Repeat Osama Raid, If Required
(NSI News Source Info) LONDON, U.K. - May 22, 2011: US President Barack Obama says he would order another covert military raid like that which killed Osama bin Laden if it was necessary to stop terrorist attacks.
Pakistan is furious that that United States sent Navy Seals to raid Osama's Pakistan hideaway earlier this month without informing Pakistani authorities.
Mr Obama told the BBC in an interview broadcast on Sunday that 'we are very respectful of the sovereignty of Pakistan,' but 'our job is to secure the United States.'
He said he could not allow 'active plans to come to fruition without us taking some action,' and would send troops again if a senior Taleban leader was found in Pakistan.
Mr Obama begins a six-day trip to Europe on Monday, visiting Ireland, Britain, France and Poland.

DTN News - EGYPT IN CRISIS: Mubarak Likely To Quit On Thursday Night: Officials

DTN News - EGYPT IN CRISIS: Mubarak Likely To Quit On Thursday Night: Officials
Source: DTN News - - This article compiled by Roger Smith from reliable sources Reuters
(NSI News Source Info) CAIRO, Egypt - February 10, 2011: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak looked likely to step down on Thursday in response to more than two weeks of nationwide protests against his 30-year rule.

Asked if Mubarak would step down, an Egyptian official told Reuters: "Most probably."

The BBC also quoted the head of Mubarak's political party as saying that the president might go.

"I spoke to the new secretary general of the ruling National Democratic Party, Hossan Badrawi," a BBC reporter said. "He said: 'I hope the president is handing over his powers tonight'.

The head of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency also said it was likely Mubarak would step down in the next few hours.

"There's a strong likelihood that Mubarak may step down this evening, which would be significant in terms of where the, hopefully, orderly transition in Egypt takes place," Leon Panetta told a congressional hearing in Washington.

Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq also told the BBC that the 82-year-old strongman may step down.

The president has been buffeted by widespread protests against poverty, repression and corruption that broke out last month in an unprecedented display of frustration at his autocratic rule.

Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets to demand that Mubarak quit and clashes between protesters and security forces have killed at least 300 people.

Mubarak has clung on to power, promising to step down in September, but that was not enough to end the uprising.

On Thursday afternoon, Egypt's military announced it was taking measures to preserve the nation and aspirations of the people after a meeting of the Higher Army Council.

The meeting of the Higher Army Council was headed by the defense minister and Mubarak was not present, according to television footage.

Pro-democracy protesters in the main focus of the opposition, Tahrir, or Liberation, Square, cheered as it seemed that Mubarak's removal was imminent.

Organizers were promising another major push on the streets on Friday when protesters said they plan to move on to the state radio and television building in "The Day of Martyrs" dedicated to the dead.

Washington has pressured Mubarak to speed up the pace of reform but has stopped short of demanding the resignation of the president of the country, which has a peace treaty with Israel and an army which receives about $1.3 billion in U.S. aid a year.

"The army is facing the choice between standing with Mubarak and perhaps being swept aside or going with the popular flow. I think they will give away Mubarak almost as a fig leaf. Possibly (Vice President Omar) Suleiman as well, although he is not as unpopular as Mubarak. There is an element of regime preservation going on here from the army elite," Julien Barnes-Dacey, a Middle East analyst at Control Risks in London, told Reuters.
