(NSI News Source Info) GAZA CITY - June 17, 2010: A Palestinian fighter was wounded by Israeli fire near the heavily guarded border with the Gaza Strip on Thursday, medics and witnesses said. "A Palestinian was moderately wounded by Israeli shelling in the Abasan area east of Khan Yunis," a medical official said. Witnesses said Israeli tanks stationed along the border had fired at a group of armed men, and that the incident took place in an area that has seen two cross-border attacks by Palestinian militants in the past month. An Israeli military spokeswoman said troops had fired at a "Palestinian operative planting an explosive device along the border fence." Gaza's borders have remained mostly calm since the end of a devastating Israeli offensive in January 2009, but there are occasional clashes along the border of the impoverished Palestinian territory.
